Described as the single largest construction project in thecity in the next three years, the new Atlanta stadium, whichremains nameless for the moment, will serve as the officialhome of the Falcons football team. The $1.2 billion dollarmulti-purpose facility, set for completion in time for the2017 NFL season, will total 1.8 million sq. ft. (167,225 sqm), and include a retractable roof configuration and an open-air concourse.“The stadium will also feature a first of its kind, 360-
degree video scoreboard, which will be programmable forvarious events,” said Rich McKay, president and CEO of theAtlanta Falcons. “Other amenities include seven exclusivedining and entertainment club areas, field level suites, a 100-yard bar and a Fantasy Football lounge.”Billed as a state-of-the-art, iconic sports and
entertainment complex, the stadium wasdesigned to attract world-class sports, culturaland commercial events and serve as a landmarkfor the city. Already getting international atten-tion, the stadium will feature a floor to ceilingwindow with views of downtown Atlanta. It willreportedly represent the highest standards inenvironmental responsibility, and will incorpo-rate the latest in sustainable and LEED advance-ments in design, construction and operations.“Our goal is for the stadium to set a new stan-
dard in sustainability for major sports and enter-tainment venues,” McKay said. “Our strategicLEED partner, Georgia Power, joins us in ourcommitment to environmental responsibility andin our approach to reimagining the stadium expe-rience.Sustainable features will include bicycle and
pedestrian paths, edible landscaping, sustainable,low/zero toxicity building materials and an open-air envi-ronment, which provides air flow and maximizes daylightand natural ventilation for energy optimization. In May 2014, a groundbreaking ceremony — complete
with fireworks and the distribution of 3D glasses — washeld for the new stadium. Falcons and MLS Atlanta ownerArthur Blank; Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed; NFLCommissioner Roger Goodell; Major League SoccerCommissioner Don Garber; and Georgia World CongressCenter Authority Executive Director Frank Poe were all inattendance.“Today is truly a celebration not only for the Falcons and
the new major league soccer team that will call this stadiumhome, but for the city of Atlanta, the state of Georgia and allof our partners who have worked so hard to make this proj-ect a reality,” Blank said at the groundbreaking ceremony.“We are committed to providing our fans and event guestswith an unparalleled experience in the new facility, andwe’re equally committed to the long-term economic growthand success of this great city and state.” The project will have a major impact not only on the
Falcons, but also the Georgia World Congress CenterAuthority (GWCCA), the city of Atlanta and the state ofGeorgia. Since their debut season in 1966, the Falcons havecalled downtown Atlanta home. After spending more than
two dozen seasons at Atlanta-Fulton CountyStadium, the team moved to the Georgia Dome in1992. The Falcons’s lease at the Georgia Domeexpires in 2020, or when the bonds that financedthe Dome’s construction are paid off (set for 2017).By then, the Dome will be a quarter century old, theaverage age of retirement for other NFL domed sta-diums. The Authority considered a major renovation of
the Georgia Dome, but a study determined costs tobring the structure to current NFL standards and tocontinue to meet the needs of the Georgia WorldCongress Center would be nearly $900 million. Itwas determined a new building would be con-structed on Authority property.
After considering two potential sites north and south ofthe existing Georgia Dome, the south location was selectedin September 2013. The site was chosen after two historicAfrican-American churches and their congregations agreedto sell their property to make way for the stadium. The high-profile project is a joint venture that includes
Holder Construction, Hunt Construction Group, HJ Russell& Company and CD Moody Construction Company(HHRM). Holder Construction is the managing partner.Reeves Contracting of Atlanta is performing site work. “We are currently drilling piers and excavating part of the

site to get it ready for the mega columns,”said William Reeves. “We are also soilcementing areas of the site to prep for thevery heavy crane loads.”So far, approximately 80 percent of the
site has been rough graded to allow the shal-low and deep foundation trade contractors tobegin their scopes. Most of the site demoli-tion has been completed, and a temporaryroad has been installed to allow for accessaround the stadium and maintain trafficflow.“The site originally had several buildings
on it, as well as a parking lot used forGeorgia Dome events, and a portion ofMartin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard that allneeded to be demolished,” Reeves said. “Alot of grading has been needed to get the siteto the elevation needed for the stadium. There were cuts up to 25 feet. There wasminimal clearing, since the site had alreadybeen developed. We did demo an existingbridge, a large concrete wall and a parkinglot.”So far, crews have hauled off 110,000 cu.
yds. (84,101 cu m) of dirt, and redistributed100,000 cu. yds. (76,455.5 cu m) on site. There is still another 70,000 cu. yds.(53,518.8 cu m) to be moved off site. An estimated 125,000 cu. yds. (95,569.4
cu m) of concrete will be used during con-struction, along with 2 million gal. (7.57 mil-lion L) of storm water vaults and cisterns;17,000 tons (15,422.1 t) of reinforcing steel,80,000 sq. ft. (7,432.2 sq m) of 12 in. (30.4cm) insulated precast concrete wall panels;19,000 tons (17,236.5 t) of structural steel;350,000 sq. ft. (32,516 sq m) of insulatedmetal panels; 150,000 sq. ft. (13,935.5 sq m)of single skin ETFE wall panels; 150,000 sq.ft. of three-layer ETFE roof panels; 500,000sq. ft. (46,451.5 sq m) of TPO roofing; and145,000 sq. ft. (13,470.9 sq m) of fixed andoperable curtainwall and windowwall.About 75 trade contractors are involved in
the project, with roughly 1,800 workers
expected on site at the peak. Still early in theconstruction phase, there are numerous tasksthat have yet to be tackled. The concrete super structure is a large por-
tion of the project that must be carried out.Among the many time-consuming activities, erecting the steel structure will dominatemost of the schedule. The size and weight ofthe steel trusses could provide a challengeduring the erection sequence, due to the sizeand weight required for each lift. The roofwill be built out of rectangular steel panels, dubbed “petals,” set on tracks that will moveand rotate to singularly open and close theroof to create an oculus effect known as thepantheon.Equipment being used on the project
includes a 30-ton (27.2 t) Komatsu HM 300articulating dump truck, a medium com-pactor, an Ingersoll Rand SD-100 large com-pactor, a Cat D3 dozer, a Komatsu D51
dozer, a Komatsu D61 dozer, a KomatsuPC220 (54,000#) excavator, a KomatsuPC400 (97,000#) excavator, a KomatsuPC450 (109,000#) excavator, a KomatsuPC600 (120,000#) excavator, a KomatsuPC650 (140,000#) excavator, a Cat 953track loader, a water truck, a KomatsuWA270 wheel loader and a KomatsuWA320 wheel loader. “The site utilities package is currently out
for bid so the majority of the utility work hasnot started,” said Reeves. “To date, 1,300feet of 20-inch pipe has been relayed for thewater line, due to the rerouting of the adja-cent roads.”Because of the project’s size, traffic con-
trol is an issue. Utility ties will need to becoordinated with the city of Atlanta, whichwill require shut-off and tie-in to several cityutilities. The Kansas City-based firm, 360
Architecture, designed the stadium alongwith the MetLife Stadium in EastRutherford, N.J., the home of New York’stwo NFL teams and the site of this year’sSuper Bowl. “Working with a client like Mr. Blank,
who brings a tremendous vision for the valueand experience he wants to provide to thecommunity, is phenomenal,” said BillJohnson, senior principal, 360 Architecture.“Together, we have been able to create abuilding that looks beyond the function of astadium to create something that is sculptur-al and beautiful.”Designing a stadium that truly captures
the atmosphere of a cheering crowd also wasimportant to the architectural team.“I believe the NFL is at a crossroads, due
to the fact that high quality broadcast com-petes for the actual event,” said Johnson.“Sports fans are staying home in increasingnumbers. The challenge for new facilities isto create a totally immersive, technologydriven game day experience, somethingunable to be appreciated at home.”The Roman-inspired design features a
roof that works like an aperture in a camera,as well as a circular video board and glassdoors that open and close to let air circulateinto the stadium, resulting in reduced energycosts. The design started from the top down, according to Johnson, with the roof’s eightlarge, triangular pieces moving along indi-vidual tracks to open and close. Johnson saidthe aperture allows the structure’s energy tobe focused toward the center of the building, unlike retractable roofs consisting of one ortwo pieces that roll on and off a stadium. The stadium will provide permanent seat-
ing for 66,000 to 72,000 fans for NFLgames, including luxury suites and otherpremium seating opportunities. The facilityalso allows for expandable seating to 80,000for marquee events such as Super Bowls andWorld Cup Soccer final matches. In addi-tion, the site includes consideration of VIP
