1st Grade: What’s AheadLanguage Arts Word Analysis: Students understand the basic features of reading.

They select letter patterns and know how to translate them into spoken language by using phonics, syllabication, and word parts. They apply this knowledge to achieve fluent oral and silent reading.

Reading Comprehension & Response to Literature & Expository Text: Students use a variety of strategies such as prediction to answer questions and identify the elements in a passage.

Writing: Students Progress through writing process using coherent writing structure to develop a main idea. Adhere to written conventions such as punctuation & capitalization.

Listening & Speaking: Students will practice effective communication skills through ‘Stand and Deliver’ and oral presentations.

Grades are based on percentages received on tests and observations of the quality of the student’s work and his/her mastery.

HomeworkHomework is an important part of a student’s daily life and

is to be included in their afternoon routine.

Homework is a teacher-planned assignment, which takes place outside of students’ regular school hours.

Homework reinforces classroom learning, develops skills, and expands on students’ school experience. Family participation is highly encouraged.

Homework is to be neat, accurate, complete, and turned in on time.

“Turned in on time” means homework is complete and in the student’s homework folder at 8:05 a.m.

It is the student’s responsibility to make sure they have their homework at the end of the day and their assignments written in their agenda.

Setting Routines at HomeBe sure your child has a quiet place to work.Review agenda, binder, and homework folder

with your child before getting started. Sit with your child as they do their homework.Have an area where backpacks are unpacked

and repacked.Pack the evening before to minimize rushing

and forgetting items in the morning.Get to bed on time, sleep is vital.Have a nutritious breakfast.

Behavior PolicyDesigned to ensure that each student has the

opportunity to learn in a safe and secure environment. Our aim is to develop responsibility, citizenship, and respect for others.

Students will earn a classroom citizenship grade and a playground citizenship grade. The playground citizenship grade will be based on the number of playground demerits and office referrals received.

ConsequencesIf a student chooses not to follow our classroom rules, the protocol will be as follows:

1st : 1st verbal warning (grade not affected)

2nd : stamp in agenda – parent initials next to stamp

3rd : Orange “Making Better Choices Slip” sent home for parent to sign and return the next day

4th : Orange “Making Better Choices Slip” sent home for parent to sign and return the next day – conference with student, teacher, parents, and administrators

5th : Office referral

Behavior GradeStudents will earn 1 point for each day

that they do not receive any warnings. On Friday, their points for the week will be

tallied in order to come up with their weekly behavior grade.For example, if your child follows all

rules all 5 days, your child will receive 100% (A+) as their weekly behavior grade.

If your child follows the rules 4 out of 5 days, your child’s weekly behavior grade will be an 80% (B-).

BirthdaysWe are unable to have birthday parties or birthday treats at school,

however, I would like to make sure all our Hoyas are recognized.

Consider coming in to read to our class. Select a book with your child to be read to our class on their special day.

Donate a book in honor of your child’s birthday to our classroom library.

If your child has a birthday during summer months, consider celebrating their half birthday.

If you are planning on having a birthday party that includes invitations, these are not to be distributed at school unless all students in the class are invited to the party.

Pick-up/Drop offOPA policy regarding late pick-up: 

Students who have not been picked up by 3:30 p.m. on regular dismissal days and 11:45 a.m. on minimum days will be sent to Champion Village.

Our Champion Village staff works very hard to ensure that our Champions are checked in and have a safe place to stay until they are picked up.

relationship with them! Please respect their property by not pulling into their driveways.

All volunteers are required to attend a Parent Volunteer Meeting before volunteering in the classroom.
