The Prayer at Valley Forge"I was riding with Mr. Potts near to the Valley Forge where the army lay during the war of yeRevolution, when Mr. Potts said, 'Do you see that woods & that plain? There laid the army ofWashington. It was a most distressing time of ye war, and all were for giving up the Ship but thatgreat and good man. In that woods (pointing to a close in view) I heard a plaintive sound as of a manat prayer. I tied my horse to a sapling & went quietly into the woods. To my astonishment I saw thegreat George Washington on his knees alone, with his sword on one side and his cocked hat on theother. He was at Prayer to the God of the Armies, beseeching to interpose with his Divine aid, as itwas ye Crisis & the cause of the country, of humanity & of the world. Such a prayer I never heardfrom the lips of man. I left him alone praying. I went home & told my wife. We never thought a mancould be a soldier & a Christian, but if there is one in the world, it is Washington. We thought it wasthe cause of God & America could prevail." - Source: Eyewitness testimony of Isaac Potts, a ValleyForge resident who shared the following story with the Rev. Nathaniel Randolph Snowden(1770-1851), who then recorded it in his "Diary and Remembrances."

1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation"Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obeyHis will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; andWhereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me "to recommend tothe people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed byacknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially byaffording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety andhappiness:

beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite inrendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people ofthis country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and thefavorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the greatdegree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rationalmanner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety andhappiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted' for the civil and religious libertywith which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and,in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us." -George Washington, Thanksgiving Proclamation, October 3, 1789

1789 Inaugural AddressOn April 30, 1789, George Washington delivered his famous Inaugural Address to both Houses ofCongress. He had just taken the oath of office on the balcony of Federal Hall in New York City, withhis hand upon a Bible opened to Deuteronomy, Chapter 28:

"Such being the impressions under which I have, in obedience to the public summons, repaired to thepresent station, it would be peculiarly improper to omit, in this first official act, my ferventsupplications to that Almighty Being who rules over the universe, who presides in the councilsof nations and whose providential aides can supply every human defect; that His benedictionmay consecrate to the liberties and happiness of the people of the United States a governmentinstituted by themselves for these essential purposes; and may enable every instrumentemployed in its administration to execute with success, the functions allotted to his charge. Intendering this homage to the Great Author of every public and private good, I assure myselfthat it expresses your sentiments not less than my own; nor those of my fellow citizens at large, lessthan either. No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the Invisible Hand which conductsthe affairs of men more than the people of the United States. Every step by which they haveadvanced to the character of an independent nation seems to have been distinguished by some tokenof providential agency. And in the important revolution just accomplished, in the system of theirUnited government, the tranquil deliberations and voluntary consent of so many distinctcommunities, from which the event has resulted, can not be compared with the means by which mostgovernments have been established, without some return of pious gratitude, along with an humbleanticipation of the future blessings which the past seem to presage ... We ought to be no lesspersuaded that the propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards theeternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained; and since the preservation of thesacred fire of liberty and the destiny of the republican model of government are justly considered asdeeply, perhaps finally, staked on the experiment...

George Washington's Farewell Address, 1796"Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality areindispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism who should labor tosubvert these great pillars of human happiness -- these firmest props of the duties of men andcitizens. The mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them. Avolume could not trace all their connections with private and public felicity. Let it simply be asked,Where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desertthe oaths which are the instruments of investigation in courts of justice? And let us with cautionindulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be concededto the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience bothforbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle."
