George Town Street Art – the strange attraction

After one night take a rest in Penang, I’m started go around George Town Street Art, the most famous place, also considered as the heart of Penang city. We have a breakfast with a famous food all over Malaysia, that is the fatty rice (Nasi Lemak). Fatty rice is a very cheap dish and popular in Malaysia. There a lot of fatty rice type were eaten with different accompaniment dishes, but in basic, fatty rice was cooked from coconut milk, eaten with the roasted salted peanuts, spicy sauce, egg boiled and the fry dry fish. We eat breakfast at place which most famous in George Town, however looks it seems cursory and not was repairs, upgrades compare to the buildings around.

George Town Street Art

Paul told me that since George Town Street Art was certified by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site, there many art projects were implemented aim to introduce, promote the culture, tourist here. That is also the origin of the murals full of lively which you see on Penang streets today, some were painted in the 3D style, some bending by the steel bars with high accuracy and skilfully absolute. Significantly, although those murals were painted on the wall, however absolutely not break the old town’s scenery. It brings those backpackers as me the strange attraction when arrive here.

You will easy get map of old towns in everywhere: the airport, tourist agency, tourist destination…in order explore George Town. The first thing that you see is those street art images and positions that it appeared. Thence, it would always make you must go and watches through all these points unconsciously. Like as me! And including Paul, this guy lived in Penang but still not know all everything here, both of us got lost in the dozen of points on the map, final, us also only went nearly all, not the whole all of points available.

As I already mention, Street Art in George Town has 2 basic forms: 3D drawings (8 drawing were marked by A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H) drawings bending by steel (24 drawings numbered from 1 to 24) and more than that (however it not appeared on the map). All describe about the customs, culture from the distant past to now of George Town, Penang. These points placed

everywhere in the city and not in sequence, make discover activity George Town activities of you more interesting.

Architecture culture in George Town

For me, those Street Art works not impressed me as much as those architectures appeared on streets. Especially, the architectures placed at crossroads, it absolutely not the same. At the crossroads, beside the bustle images in daily life of natives, also the images of many backpackers eagerly exploring George Town interwoven with ancient architecture blocks. All make the scene around become lively and full of attractive.

In George Town, mostly the architectures from Chinese people lives here. There ancient houses. Those Buddhist pagodas within each small alleys, sometimes, there gave off the smell of incense smoke, full of Chinese styles. Actually, Chinese people are good at the community development activities. However, Chinese people in China unlike Chinese people abroad.

Japanese culture also get a certain foothold in George Town, it were marked by the houses have architecture and arrangement completely different the rest.

Beside, the India community in Little India zone. That place there many flower shops, melodious music everywhere, those colorful sarees, those India dishes from many regions, and many

groceries serving the community of India people in Penang. The more going to weekend, the air increasing bustling here.

Especially, secluded from the Chinese and Indian culture. Locals also own many own characteristics in ancient architectures mingled with modern of Europe style.

Do not forget Penang foods…

Exploring Georgetown get a lot of interesting things. Each person would have each different experience. For me, exploring George Town not just stop at Street Art, the diverse architectures…one thing also created the highlight of this city are the foods. When you thinking of Penang, must think that : Yeah, this is a culinary city of Malaysia. About Malaysia food, I would write in other post.
