From the Editor’s DeskFrom the Editor’s Desk Sometimes it doesn’t seem right to lose someone we admire so muchsooner than we expect. How true it was in losing Capt. Herb Emory lastmonth. It took a while for it to make sense. But upon reflection, God got a good onethis time and used his life as a teaching tool for us to learn the importance ofservice to others. While we selfishly wanted to keep him in our lives, theimpact of Herbert Lee Emory did not and will not fade away with time. Folkssay “God works in mysterious ways” but not this time. There's a legacystamped on the hearts of all that knew him or knew of him. And one daywe'll see our friend again and thank him and God for the wonderful blessingwe have all shared in a life well lived in service to so many.I pray that each of us use this lesson in our own lives to make a difference inthe lives of others.Till next month God Bless!

UnspokenUnspokenTraditionTradition

When I listened to several submitted CDs,there was one that stood tall above the rest tomy traditional bluegrass ears. The CD,Simple Little Town, impressed me so, that Ilistened to it 3 times in a row never tiring ofthe group's sound. That's what we need moreof these days. I'm pleased that Bryan Alperreached out to Unspoken Tradition and gotthis response. C.S. “Charlie” Robinson

Bryan we can thank you enough and arehonored that you like the music. We work hardon it for sure! The original members of the band all grew uptogether. Audie and Zane (McGinnis, guitarand

banjo) are brothers who have had a life longlove of the music. Lee Shuford (dobro) and theMcGinnis's are all from Cherryville, NC andstarted the band after playing at the famousBomb Shelter jams that have been drawingpeople to pick together for decades inCherryville. The McGinnis brothers are students of afantastic musician named Darin Aldridge whois a Cherryville native too.Darin has a professional touring band with hiswife and it was through working with Darin onthe Mountain Home label that I met the guysand joined the band. By that time Matt Warrenhad started on the bass. We asked Tim to joinafter he engineered the Simple Little Townalbum and played fiddle on it. Soon he was apermanent member. I think that we mesh because we all have a lovefor the same style of Bluegrass and are all onthe same page with our musical taste. We comefrom an area of the country where goodBluegrass is the norm, timing is everything andsmooth vocal harmonies are required. We doour best to achieve these and work hard at it. I'm glad you think the music is good. I guess itdepends on what night you catch us. HA! Ithink music is best when it comes from theheart. We are grew up with this music and havebeen doing it most of our lives so it is anextension of who we are, it is a refection of our

culture, our values. It's the music of our parentsand grandparents. It's something we enjoy butare also proud to do. You hear the word"traditional" to describe it but I think it is evenmore than just that. I use the word "heritage"music and we want to live up to that musicmaking heritage that is a part of our region. Simple Little Town was written by LeeShuford who sings lead. He wrote it as aheartfelt wish for the simple life and I thinkthat is something we can all relate to. It isabout the idyllic life we all long for but all toooften, fail to find. It is a salute to small town, working class America. Another one I love is Time Marches On. This isanother one from Lee. It is touching. It talksabout a lifetime of love and loss and covers themoment that a young couple meets, falls inlove, sends their son off to marry and then thespouses death. Heavy but melodicallybeautiful. There is a wide variety of songs and temposbut they all have those themes that we can all

relate to. We love what we do but more importantly, playing music is a part of each of us. It's in ourblood and it's real for us. The result is anauthentic delivery of the music and I hope itcomes across to listeners. We like to call it Working Class Bluegrassbecause we are just everyday, hard workingguys who want to pick and sing and hang outwith the same kind of folks. We are blessedthat God has given us the talent to be able to dothat. Ty Gilpin Learn more about this group and their new CDat http://www./unspokentradition.com/

Police Officer Jerry Reed

EverettGwinnett County Police Department, Georgia

End of Watch: Friday, April 17, 1964

On April 17, 1964,Officers Ralph Davis, Jesse Gravittand Jerry Everett were murdered. They were 48, 55 and28 years old, respectively, and together represented one-third of Georgia's Gwinnett County Police Department. The officers were killed late at night, near the end oftheir shifts, when they responded to a dispatch call in aremote area off Beaver Ruin Road. They were shackledwith their own handcuffs and slain with their own guns.At the time it was reportedly, the most notorious event inGeorgia law enforcement history and remains suchtoday. Jerry Everett (the youngest officer) was brother toRoger, Randall and Leroy Everett. Music was such a part of the Everett family back thenthat it became even more so as friends consoled theheartbroken family, playing music every weekendthrough the 14 months of not knowing what happened tothe officers. Eventually, through the trials andconvictions, music continued to be the bond for allconcerned. Thus sorrow created the tradition thatcontinues today. Sadly, a few of the hundreds who visitEverett's year round understand the circumstances thathave created such a revered little music venue. That was 50 years ago.. On April 12th dozens of lawenforcement officers descended on the Everetthomeplace where a fitting tribute was made to the

families, and the officers. Tommy Everett nephew toJerry Everett spoke of how honored he and the familywere to have this tribute at tho old homestead and howproud the family members now gone would be.. It was asolemn and moving memorial service recounting theevents of a half century ago that should never beforgotten. As heart wrenching as it is still today, it's fairto say we all wish the very best to all those who stillsuffer from a tragic loss and how thankful we are for thelegacy of fine music that continues today in honor of theevents of 50 years ago.

50 Years atEverett's

Fifty years is a long time tokeep a tradition going. Butfaith, family and communityhave bonded the Everett andbluegrass pickers, families

and fans together providing a bright future for bluegrass and gospel in Suwanee, Ga.With a new coat of paint and lots of 'sprucing up”, Everetts Music Barn and the oldEverett homeplace shown like a new penny last month as an incredible line up oftalent came to celebrate the milestone anniversary.

Friday night crowds were delighted with theextraordinary high energy show put on byEdgar Loudermilk (former member of IIIrdTyme Out) and Dave Adkins (RepublicSteele). The Trinity River Band blew theaudience away as they performed new songsfrom their latest CD Better than Blue.Saturday brought even more incredible talent asClinton Gregory put on a super showcase of

talent with his band followed bythe ever popular Francis Mooneyand Fontana Sunset doing lots ofcrowd favorites. Saturday's event was punctuatedwith two of the most talentedsweethearts in bluegrass today.Kenny and Amanda Smith.Heartfelt harmonies, killer

instrumentation and a sprinkling of humor w ere justright for ending the day. Everett Family Band did perform and continues tobe the sentimental favorite. And pickers and fansdidn't have enough to enjoy there was more thanenough great food and the fellowship to go around. All in all it was a great two days at Everett,s. SEBAwants to thank the family and all the volunteers forallowing us to be a part of such a wonderful event.

Thanks Y'all

Bluegrass Hall of Fame Recipient, George Shuffler passed away April 7 th 2014, just shy of his 89thbirthday. Shuffler was born in Valdese, North Carolina on April 15, 1925. Affectionately known as"The Third Stanley Brother" performed on many of bluegrass music's most historic recordings.George toured 20 years with the Stanley Brothers where he developed his unique cross picking guitarstyle that has been a big influence to many musicians. He was inducted into the InternationalBluegrass Music Association’s Hall of Fame in 2011 and was a recipient of the North CarolinaHeritage Award in 2007. In 2011, Shuffler was inducted into the International Bluegrass MusicAssociation's Hall of Fame along with Del McCoury. George Shuffler’s influences in bluegrass are asan innovative bass player, guitar stylist and featured vocalist and humorist, primarily as a sideman in

some of the most important bands in the music’s history. Many bluegrass artists just released a tribute album The Boy from Valdese -

A Tribute to George Shuffler honoring one of bluegrass music's innovative pioneers. The tribute recording of the title songfeatures old friends and long-time collaborators Buddy Melton (Lead Vocals) and Milan Miller (Guitar, Baritone Vocals), withspecial guests Terry Baucom (Banjo), Carl Jackson (Tenor Vocals), Ron Shuffler (Upright Bass), and Adam Steffey (Mandolin).Shuffler was one of the most beloved and influential sidemen of Bluegrass’ first generation. His contributions to the bluegrassmusic include his “walking” style of playing the bass, and even more significant, his cross-picking style of guitar playing. In 2011, Shuffler was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Association's Hall of Fame along with Del McCoury.George Shuffler’s influences in bluegrass are as an innovative bass player, guitar stylist and featured vocalist and humorist, primarily as a sideman in some of the most important bands in the music’s history. This video includes one of Shuffler's stylisticbreaks. The IBMA noted..."Shuffler grew up in a large family near Valdese, North Carolina, learning his first guitar chords at age 10. Young Georgelistened to many of the groups performing live on various 50,000-watt radio stations around the country, and Merle Travis washis idol. In the early 1940s Shuffler was working in a local string band with a regular $20-a-week job at a bakery. Filling in asbass player with Charlie & Danny Bailey and the Happy Valley Boys at a theatre and several other venues in Granite Falls, N.C., Shuffler accepted a $60 a

week job with the Baileys and left with them for Nashville and The Grand Ole Opry, his first professional job. After the Baileys quit the business, Shuffler worked with a comedy team for a while, returned to Valdese and got married and worked with several bands playing guitar and singing. Carter Stanley called Shuffler on December 28, 1950 and said he and Ralph were leaving Bristol to move to WVLK in Versailles, Kentucky, and he asked Shuffler to join the Stanley Brothers to play bass—an offer George accepted. Following WVLK, Shuffler worked with The Stanley Brothers in numerous markets. His “walking style” of bass playing, introduced on the Stanley Brothers’ 1953 Mercury Recordings, would imprint itself on a number of younger players, including Hall of Fame member Tom Gray. Primarily a bass player, Shuffler was in and out of the Stanley group many times until the early 1960s, when it got down to just Carter, Ralph and George. Inspired by Bill Napier, Shuffler perfected his signature style of cross-picking that would be widely emulated. Following Carter Stanley’s death December 1, 1966, Shuffler stayed on with Ralph for several months. He then worked with Don Reno and Bill Harrell until 1969, recording several albums with them on bass. For a number of years he also led The Shuffler Family gospel group, which recorded more than a half dozen albums.Bluegrass artists and fans have shown a great outpouring of love for Shuffler since his passing was

announced. Several performed with him and others learned from him. Always cheerful, Shuffler was a gifted artist who love the music and its people. The bluegrass people also loved him. He will be remembered for his contributions to the music he loved so much.

Perhaps no one in SEBA was more familiar with Herb Emory than Dickson Lester.“We played Capt. Herb's Annual Toys for Tots event for 5 years along with severalother charity events” Lester said. Each time he and his group The Mars Hill PorchPickers performed, Herb requested some of his favorite songs. Among them, I'll FlyAway, The Old Home Place and the gospel medleys the group often performs.Although Auto Racing was his passion, Bluegrass was high on his list of favorites.Herb and his wife Karen attended bluegrass events as often as time would allow.Always gracious and very appreciative, everyone who met him or listened to him onthe radio, walked away feeling good about him and themselves. Words ofencouragement and thanks for the work folks were doing was always part of what hedid when you met him. And as he said, many times there's a tap in my toes and a songin my heart. With Capt. Herb, “the Bluebird of Happiness” was never far away whenhe was around. Our Hearts and prayers are with Karen, the family and the multitude of fans who willmiss our friend and SEBA supporter.

Lester Flatt to be celebrated at MerleFest

The 100th anniversary of Lester Flatt’s birthdate is on June 19 this year and many residents of his home town, Sparta, Tennessee, will be celebrating the life of the first generation bluegrass legend.

Among the events planned is the collaborative effort by Roland White and Blake Williams who will be celebrating 100 years of Lester Flatt at MerleFest (Wilkesboro, North Carolina) this coming Saturday, April26.

White joined The Nashville Grass in 1969 and worked with the group until 1973 when he left to join his brother,Clarence White, in a television venture. Williams joined The Nashville Grass in 1978 and continued to perform

with the band until Flatt passed away on May 11, 1979.

White and Williams presented the idea to MerleFest ArtistRelations Manager, Steve Johnson last year.

Williams elaborates ….

“Lester would have been 100 years old this June andRoland and I felt it was so important to commemoratethe life of this iconic person in bluegrass musichistory. So we made our pitch to Steve and are sothankful that he and the MerleFest staff agreed thatLester should be honoured in some way at this year’sfestival.

Not only is it important for Roland and I toreminisce about Lester with the folks who knew himand his music, but it’s essential that we continue toeducate the younger generation on the people whomade bluegrass what it is today.”
