GEOPAPARAZZI: INTRODUCTION

Geopaparazzi is a tool for digital field mapping. Originally it has been developed for fast qualitative engineering/geologic surveys but it can be used also as a tool for emergency management, general field activities (sport) and tourism.

Geopaparazzi is available on the Android Play Store. Search for Geopaparazzi on your phone or get it from the online android market.

Note: Geopaparazzi doesn't work on iPhone and Windows Phone.

GEOPAPARAZZI: INTRODUCTION

The main aim of Geopaparazzi is to have a tool that:● can be always at hand when needed● gives the possibility to take georeferenced pictures

during the survey, with further possibility to import them into a main GIS application

● is extremely easy to use and intuitive, providing just few important functionalities

Page 4: Geopaparazzi Workshop Foss4ge-Paris

GEOPAPARAZZI: INTRODUCTION

The main features available in Geopaparazzi are:● georeferenced notes: text notes, pictures, sketches,

forms ● gps tracks logging● a map view for browsing and navigation of the data● easy export of collected data● simple generation of any type of background map

GEOPAPARAZZI: INSTALLATION

1. connect your Android device to internet

2. open Play Store3. type geopaparazzi within the

Search textbox

GEOPAPARAZZI: INSTALLATION

1. connect your Android device to internet

2. open Play Store3. type geopaparazzi within the

Search textbox4. select to install the first

application found with the name Geopaparazzi which represents the last version (not geopaparazzi3)

5. open Geopaparazzi...

GEOPAPARAZZI: FIRST START

Geopaparazzi requires to turn on the GPS position of the device, if this is not available when starting, the application will ask to activate it.

Activate the GPS positioning following the specifics of your own device.

Place the note in the GPS position or in the last map center coordinates (active only if GPS has fix).

Simple notes can contain:

● text

● picture

● sketch

Complex notes are based on structured forms.

GEOPAPARAZZI: MAPS VIEW

● Geopaparazzi by default uses on line services (mapnik)

saving the visualized tiles (and zoom) on the device

● it is possible to use other background maps:

➢ off-line

➢ personalized (type of map and area)

available on the device.

The basemap is loaded from an on-line service considering the GPS position (if the GPS is not active or if there is no internet connection no map will be displayed).

Tap the orange button in the map view to see the menu.

GEOPAPARAZZI: NOTES

Select to place the note in the GPS position or in the center of the map.

Complex notes are possible using customized forms.

Simple notes

To use them, a tags.json file needs to be created and placed inside the geopaparazzi folder inside the sdcard. In that file a json format description of the wanted tags and forms needs to be placed.

By default a sample tags.json is created in the Geopaparazzi installation. It contains form samples and examples to show all supported form widgets.

Page 28: Geopaparazzi Workshop Foss4ge-Paris

GEOPAPARAZZI: NOTES

Complex forms can contain different tabs and fields defined by drop-down menu or multiple choices selection.

notes representation

upload the current project in the net

export all the images of the project into a folder

export all the notes as a report in a PDF file

GEOPAPARAZZI: PROJECTS● projects are saved in a single file with the given name

● the first project, created by default in the home directory

of the device is named geopaparazzi.gpap

● when installing the application in the home directory of

the device a new folder will be created geopaparazzi

containing the form definition and all the temporary files

● it is strongly reccommanded to create a new project for

different field surveys to avoid confusion in the

registered data

GEOPAPARAZZI & gvSIG

● the plugin for the support of Geopaparazzi in gvSIG is available at: https://we.tl/ROxgEc267P

● read carefully the installation guidelines available here: https://github.com/moovida/hydrologis4gvsig/releases/download/release_0.1.0___jgt_0.8.1/hydrologis4gvsig_quickstart.pdf

● in gvSIG it is possible to

– visualize a Geopaparazzi project– create the map background data as .mbtile– export and browse the image notes– export all the data contained in the project as

shapefile

Page 55: Geopaparazzi Workshop Foss4ge-Paris

GEOPAPARAZZI & gvSIG● the plugins are supplied as a gvSIG package (gvspks)● to install the Geopaparazzi plugin use the standard

gvSIG updtate manager● enter the Addons manager,

which can be found in the Tools menu

● choose the Installation from file option

● select the installation package

● push on next

Page 56: Geopaparazzi Workshop Foss4ge-Paris

GEOPAPARAZZI & gvSIG● from the dialog that lists all installed and available

plugins look for the plugins that start with org.jgrasstools.gvsig

● select and confirm that you want to install those plugins

● wait until all the packages are installed

● restart gvSIG

Page 57: Geopaparazzi Workshop Foss4ge-Paris

Page 59: Geopaparazzi Workshop Foss4ge-Paris

GEOPAPARAZZI & gvSIGIn gvSIG there is a tool to create the background maps for

Geopaparazzi. The user just sets the wanted zoomlevels and a name and output folder for the database.

Page 60: Geopaparazzi Workshop Foss4ge-Paris

GEOPAPARAZZI & gvSIGOnce launched it takes the current view and all layers and

generates an mbtiles database for Geopaparazzi. Pay attention on the upper zoomlevel, it might be hard on your PC and time.

On large areas 19 might be a good

compromise.
