Geonames and standardization of geographical names in the Czech Republic

• Standardization began on topographic maps 1:75 000 in the former Czechoslovakia before WW II

• First update was realized in 1951• Names applied to maps in scale 1:10 000 have been

standardized since 1958 - the process still continues• Creation of the Geonames database started in 1997• Since 2005 Geonames data have been available in

completeness• Geonames database was restructured and joined Land

Survey Office‘s GIS called ZABAGED in 2009

Geonames database in 2009/2010 Main changes of its structure

Before 2009

• Database records represented map lettering of the Basic Map 1:10 000

• Geonames features had no geometry of its own

• Geonames features had no database relation to the corresponding ZABAGED ones

• Both the databases were not compatible in the past

Since 2010

• Database records represent named places in accordance with INSPIRE policy

• Geonames features have geometry of its own

• Geonames features have database relation to the corresponding ZABAGED ones

• Both the databases can be fused together in the future
