INTRODUCTION

The Sheffield Township property was staked to cover a gneissic granite body in the North-west corner of the township. One zone in the property was found to be free of joints for an area of 70 meters by 30 meters. Other zones were found to have widely spaced joints and other areas were found to be highly jointed.

Qualifications of James Joseph Forsterl have been prospecting exclusively for dimensional building stone since the autumn of 1990.

l have received training from Jean Claude Corbetl, Vice-President of Manex G ran it.

l have optioned granite properties to Manex Granit Inc and Manitou Stone (Canada) Inc. l have successfully completed OPAP project OP94-126 which partially funded the assessment work on these claims.

l have performed contract work for Canital Granite Exploration and Manex Granit.

LOCATION AND ACCESS

The property is located in Sheffield Township and covers the west half of Concession V, Lot 26 and Concession IV, Lot 26.

Assess is provided via paved highway #41 approximately 11 kilometers south of the village of Kaladar located at the intersection of highway #41 and highway #7. The primary showings can be found by walking east along a rough road for 700 meters. This rough road is accessible by 4-wheel drive vehicles and trucks from April to November.

PREVIOUS WORK

The assessment files show no previous work. There is no GDIF file for Sheffield Township. The site is not mentioned in open file report 5706, Building Stone Potential in Eastern Ontario by P. S. Lebaron et all or in open file report 5585, Reconnaissance Survey of Building Stones of Eastern and Central Ontario by C. P. Verschuren et all.

During the course of prospecting the property no sign of previous exploration activity was found.

REGIONAL GEOLOGYE. G. Bright in OFR 5598, The Geology of the Mellon Lake Area describes the regional geology as follows.

Middle Proterozoic rocks of the Central Metasedimentary Belt of the Grenville Province underlie the region. Flat-lying Ordovician sediments uncomformably overlie the Proterozoic rocks south of the mining claims.

The Grenville Supergroup consist of clastic and carbonate metasediments and mafic to felsic metavolcanics. Rocks of the Supergroup form narrow northeasterly trending belts which are separated by granitoid intrusions or fault-bounded gneiss-migmatite complexes.

One of the fault-bounded gneiss-migmatite complexes is the Mellon Lake Complex of tonalite-granodioritic gneisses and migmatites. This complex is 8 km. wide, trends northeast and on the southeast is fault-bounded by another belt of Grenville Supergroup strata.

The age of the this complex is not known. The migmatization event recorded in this complex is absent in adjacent Grenville Supergroup strata suggesting that the complex may be the basement of the Supergroup.

The mining claims have been staked on the Mellon Lake Complex.

PROPERTY GEOLOGY

The property is underlain by a uniform gneiss. The level of metamorphism seems to be middle to upper amphibolite. Bright suggests a tonalitic gneiss of granulite facies metamorphism overprinted with lower to middle amphibolite.

l have mapped the gneiss according to the structural classification used by D. F. Hewitt in Geological Report 52, Geology and Mineral Deposits of the Parry Sound - Huntsville Area. He defines gneisses according to the type of original metasedimentary material, the structure and the degree of granitization.

ORIGINAL METASEDIMENTARY MATERIALHe suggest that a paragneiss gives rise to a biotite gneiss and an ambhibolite which gives rise to a hornblende gneiss. He observes that both biotite and hornblende are frequently present with one usually predominating.

The only gneiss observed here is a hornblende gneiss due to prominence of hornblende over biotite

STRUCTUREThree major types of gneissic structure are defined by Hewitt. They are banded, made up of alternating well-defined layers of different composition showing good linear continuity; veined, characterized by a non-uniform pattern of sub-parallel, branched, discontinuous and more or less irregular granitic and mafic bands; and homogeneous, which shows little or no banding but distinct mineral alignment.

The only gneissic structure observed here was the banded gneiss.

DEGREE OF GRANITIZATIONHewitt defines the degree of granitization as follows. Where the percentage of injected granitic material is 10 to 25 the gneiss is termed slightly granitized; where the percentage is 30 to 50 the gneiss is termed moderately granitized; and where the percentage is over 50 the gneiss is termed strongly granitizer.

Most of the gneiss observed here was moderately granitized, in the range of 30 percent. One area was observed to be in the range of 55 percent.

The quartz content of the gneiss was observed to be that of a monzonite. Tension fractures perpendicular to the gneissosity were observed filled with quartz. They were frequently 4" long by 2" wide. They were often observed in the range of one per 10 square meters.

Garnet seems to be totally absent.

Pegmatite veins were observed running parallel to the gneissosity. They are probably related injected granitic material, however the zone of gneiss observed

to be strongly granitized did not show any pegmatite. The pegmatite veins often contained coarse crystals of biotite approximately 3" square.

One very small patch of stained gneiss was observed indicating the presence of sulphides. Small amounts of magnetite were found on some of the samples.

JOINTINGZone A contained a joint free zone approximately 70 meters long by 30 meters

wide. Other zones contained joints spaced at 10 meters apart and 7 meters apart. Another zone contained a sparsely jointed area where the jointing seemed to be related to stresses of the freeze-thaw cycle and l expect the joints to disappear at depth.

The central ridge contained the unjointed granite while the surrounding lower areas were in general highly jointed.

SHEETINGThe sheeting was observed to be in the order of a minimum of 1.5 meters apart. The sheeting in one of the areas seemed to be in the order of 10 meters forming a large ridge which could not be climbed over.

ZONE AThis area has a joint free area 70 meters by 30 meters and no pegmatite veins. The sheeting was not exposed.ZONE BThis area has on family of joints spaced 10 meters apart perpendicular to theridge. The sheeting is a minimum of 3 meters apart. A pegmatite vein occurs 2.5meters in from the edge of the quarrable gneissZONE CThis zone has 2 quarrable areas. The south-west quarter of the outcrop has amain family of joints 10 meters apart running almost due north and a weaklydefined 2nd family at 7 meters apart running north by north-east. The sheetingseems to be in the order of 5 meters apart. A 0.5 meter wide pegmatite veinoccurs 1/3 up the face of the outcrop. The north-east quarter of the outcrop has aseries of widely spaced joints with a random orientation. The sheeting is up to 10meters apart and forms a steep ridge which cannot be easily climbed over. Therandom pattern of the jointing leads one to conclude that the joints may disappearat depth.ZONEDThis zone has one family of joints running north-east at a spacing of 2.5 meters to3 meters apart. The sheeting seems to be in the range of 1.5 meters apart.ZONE EThis is the only quarrable zone l was able to find in claim 1191581. It containsjoints spaced 10 meters apart running north-east. The sheeting seems to be inthe range of 3 meters apart. The proximity of this zone to the highway may renderthe site unsuitable to quarry.

WORK PROGRAMThe following list gives the dates when the prospecting survey and assessment

work was done and the specific type of activity.SEPTEMBER 18/93 PROSPECTINGSEPTEMBER 23/93 PROSPECTINGSEPTEMBER 24/93 PROSPECTINGSEPTEMBER 25/93 PROSPECTINGOCTOBER 7/93 PROSPECTINGNOVEMBER 18/93 SAMPLINGFEBRUARY 18/94 STAKE CLAIM #1191580FEBRUARY 19/94 STAKE CLAIM #1191581MARCH 3/94 RECORD CLAIMSJUNE 30/94 DRILL A QUARRYJULY 1/94 DRILL A QUARRYJULY 29/94 STRIPPINGAUGUST 18/94 DRILL S QUARRYSEPTEMBER 5/94 PROSPECTING

EQUIPMENT USEDThe following equipment was used to drill and quarry on June 30/94, July 1/94and August 18/94.1 -Pionjar 120 drill1-16" long drill steel with integral bit3 - 24" long drill steel with integral bit8 sets of plugs and feathers1 - 72" long pinch bar1 -1 ton chain fall1/2 ton truck was rented to transport the rough block off the outcrop on August18/94 as my car was unable to drive the rough road or carry the granite block.

The following equipment was used to strip moss off an outcrop on July 29/941 spade1 gravel rake1 bristle broom1 wheelbarrow

PAID ASSISTANTSl operated the Pionjar and paid one individual to assist me in transporting the equipment and help with the Pionjar drilling. This was required as my car does not have the clearance to drive the rough road to reach Zone A. l felt it necessary to sample Zone A (and not closer to Highway #41) as this area shows the most promise. Two assistants were hired on August 18/94 because l was worried two individuals would not be able to get the 400 Ib block up onto the truck bed. Drilling more granite and squaring-off the 2 cubic foot block of granite was also done on this day.

The assistants were always paid 3100.00 per day.

SUMMARY OF EXPLORATION AND DEVELOPMENT WORK

The site was discovered quite by chance in the course of driving a number of different roads looking for good granite sites.

Prior to staking the claims l prospected the ridge looking for good jointing and defects. This included assessing the jointing, sheeting, the defects (the pegmatite veins, quartz pods and discolouration) and a small scale collecting of samples to get a rough idea of the colour. This survey, combined with consultations with the resident geologist, Paul Kingston and Jean-Claude Corbeil of Manex Granit led me to believe that the site had some potential.

The claims were staked in the winter to minimize the amount of time and expense spent staking.

After the claims were recorded this site became part of my successful OPAP project. The OPAP grant funded my work program which included a small regional survey (not filed for assessment credit), drilling and quarrying a 2 cubic foot size block for review of colour and aesthetic appeal, sampling to test colour consistency, a small amount of stripping and some further prospecting on parts of the claims l had not yet had a chance to survey. The 2 cubic foot block was sent to Canital Granite in Winnipeg who have expressed an interest in the site. They, in association with Manex Granit will option the property if the feel they can generate the sales. To this end they have promised me that foreign granite buyers will be looking at the site in 1995.

RECOMMENDATIONS

l am recommending that Zone A be bulk sampled to test the size of rough blocks that could be quarried. Rough blocks would also provide material for ASTM testing and enough stock to further assess the marketability of the stone.

Failing that a reduced work program should include quarrying a one cubic block from the second best area, Zone C, to make tiles to assess its marketability. A power stripping program (using a water pump) to remove moss and grasses from the southwest edge of Zone E to try an expand the area of good jointing would also be a good idea. This stripping activity will likely require a work permit from the Ministry of Natural Resources.

If Manex decides not to pick-up the claims l may be forced to quarry more granite from Zone A to assist me in optioning the claims to another party.
