Overview
This section provides information on starting Geolog, project management, and using the Launcher Bar. See Using Geolog for assistance with navigating menus and dialog boxes, and using the mouse and keyboard while working in Geolog.
Throughout the Geolog documentation, mouse button actions are provided for navigation and execution instructions. See Keyboard Navigation on page 1-4 for information on navigating in Geolog Version 6.7 and higher using the keyboard.

Starting Geolog
On UNIX
Change directory to the project directory, if required.
Enter geolog6
Or
Enter the full path to the Geolog6 startup script; for example:
% /bin/geolog6
On Windows
Click on Start > (All) Programs > Geolog6 > Geolog6(assuming the defaults have been used during installation).
NOTE On startup Geolog opens the previously opened project. If a project has not been previously opened, the project dialog box is displayed.
The Geolog Launcher Bar is then displayed.

view and file); see Using Geolog for further information on opening multiple document views within an application;
from within some applications, other Geolog applications can be started separately (e.g. in Project, select Tools > Well... to start the Well application); see the documentation for the application for further information.

Project Management
Project File Structure
A project groups related wells together so they can be managed and analyzed effectively. A project can also be seen as a directory that contains log data, wells, plots, functions, reports, layouts, specifications and sections. A number of current projects may be grouped as working projects, with each project typically identified using names of basins, fields, authority permits, and so on.
When a new project is created, a project directory and the following subdirectories under the project directory are created:
data data to load, unloaded well data, tape devices
layouts display specifications for data, xplots, frequencies
loglan loglan programs and executables, modules
plots CGM pictures, plotter devices
reports load, well, regression, etc. reports
specs load specifications, application parameters, etc.
wells loaded well data
Other directories for the project are created by Geolog as required (e.g., when you create and save a cross section):
functions curves, macros, polygons
sections section display specifications
The following directories may be created, if required, but are generally used for the site project (see Project Structure on page 3-3 for information on Geolog project types).
graphics patterns, fill, markers
app-defaults menu files
bin executables, environment specifications
New projects are created from the Geolog Launcher Bar. Existing projects can be opened from the Unix prompt or the Geolog Launcher Bar.
Creating New Projects
To create a new project1. If you have just started Geolog, click on the Cancel button in the Project Select dialog box (see
Fig. 1).
If Geolog is already running, from the Geolog Launcher Bar, select Project > New.
The New Project dialog box is then displayed.
2. Fill in the fields of the New Project dialog box as described in Table 1-1, "New Project Dialog Box Components" on page 1-6.

Private and Public Projects
When using the New Project dialog box to create new projects:
if the Public radio button is selected, the project is available to all users of Geolog;
if the Private radio button is selected, the project is restricted (via the user ID) to the user who created the project. Other users can be given access permission to private projects by modifying the Study in the PNS Manager (Project Control) on page 4-13.
Opening Projects
A new project name and description (as well as all other data from the New Project dialog box) are stored in the pns_.projects file, by default in the /PNS3TE/config directory. This file is used by Geolog to display all projects available to the user, based upon filtering criteria, in the "Project Select Dialog Box" on page 1-8.
All projects for your site should be listed for selection but note that directory and file read/write permissions will affect your ability to open and/or make changes to projects.

Click on the Directory Select icon to open the Select Dialog Box on page 1-25 to locate and select the required path.

Removing / Changing Projects
Before a project is removed or renamed it must first have its entry removed from the project registry.
The individual with the required permissions (usually the Systems or Project Administrator) can remove/change projects as follows:
Remove the entry from the project registry (see "Deregistering Projects" on page 1-11).
Rename the project directory, or archive/delete the project directory and its subdirectories (see "Project File Structure" on page 1-5).
Deregistering Projects
A user can deregister projects over which he/she has ownership. NOTE that deregistering a project DOES NOT remove the project data/files - it only removes the project name from te Project Select Dialog box.
1. From the Geolog Launcher Bar, select Project > Deregister... to display the "Project Select Dialog Box" on page 1-8.
2. Select "Mine" from the Owner dropdown list button.
3. Select the required project and click on OK to display the Deregister Project confirmation dialog box.
4. Click on OK to confirm the process.
Displaying Project Information
From the Geolog Launcher Bar, select Project > Properties... to display information such as the full path name, type of database and host name of the currently open project.

To change the working directory Select Project > Change Directory... from the Geolog Launcher Bar to open the Directory
Select dialog box.

Administration
Select the Administration menu on the Geolog Launcher Bar to perform Geolog licensing and project administration tasks, to use the Configuration Editor on page 5-20 and to set the OpenWorks Interpreter. See Licensing on page 6-1, PNS Manager (Project Control) on page 4-13 and Set Interpreter on page 2-52 for further information.
Set Epos User
This allows the user to run in either in EPOS3 or EPOS4 mode. Selecting "Use Epos User" runs in EPOS4 mode. See Set Epos User in the PNS User Guide for more information.
This setting has an affect on what is displayed in the Open and New dialogs. For example, a selected Epos user is only applicable for certain hosts and therefore the "Hosts" within combo box will list only those hosts. Project listing also updated to show relevant public/private EPOS3 or EPOS4 projects.
