The Geography and Geoscience degree programmeis the new entry pathway to the study of Geography,Geology and Earth Science at Trinity. Our four-yearprogrammes, culminating in the degrees of Geographyor Geoscience, combine classroom lectures, seminars,

laboratory-based practical classes, and outdoor fieldwork, to develop the theoretical understanding andtechnical expertise needed to address applied, real-world problems such as natural resourcemanagement and sea level rise.

Structure of the Geography and Geosciences Degree Programme

Trinity is the first and only Irish university to join the prestigious ranks of the League of European Research Universities (LERU).

In years 1 and 2 you will acquire a broad grounding ingeography and geoscience with an emphasis onphysical geography, geology and human-environmentinteractions. You will learn about topical issues such asclimate change, natural hazards (e.g. volcanoes, earthquakes, landslides), energy, sustainability andnatural resources. These foundation years cover adiverse range of material including: the origins anddevelopment of our planet; earth structure andcomposition; circulation in the atmosphere and oceans;the evolution of life on Earth; Earth surface processesand environments (e.g. glaciers, rivers and deserts). Inaddition to learning about the physical, chemical andbiological processes responsible for creating andshaping the Earth, students will also consider theunique role that humans play in the Earth system, including their impacts on the land, air and water, andthe grand challenges linked to environmentalgovernance, policy and management.

In years 3 and 4, you will deepen your knowledge inspecialist areas, while further developing a portfolio ofpractical and technical skills (e.g. geochemical analysis, geographical information systems, remote sensing). Ourflexible programme structure provides for modulechoice while retaining coherent curriculum design, thereby ensuring graduates are well prepared for entry

to the constantly changing job market. Specialistoptions span the breadth of Geography and Geoscience, allowing you to tailor the course to suit your interests. Inthis way, you may focus on topics traditionallyassociated with geography (e.g. geomorphology, globalisation, sustainability) or geology (e.g.volcanology, palaeontology, natural resources), or youmay choose to retain a broader, multi-disciplinaryperspective that spans the critical interface betweenscience and society.

Career Opportunities

Geography and geoscience graduates are highly valuedfor their cross-disciplinary expertise, adaptability andexperience of dealing with complex spatial ormultivariate data sets. They are in demand to work onmany of society’s most important challenges, and canpursue lucrative and personally rewarding careers inindustry, academia, research and government. Careersleading directly from the programme include work in:environmental, engineering and geologicalconsultancies; mineral exploration companies; thehydrocarbon industry; environmental planning;overseas development; government geological surveys;teaching and research.
