Nota histórica
Santo Domingo es la ciudad colonial europea más antigua del hemisferio occidental. Fue establecida como capital de la primera colonia americana de España por el hermano de Cristóbal Colón. Inicialmente tenía el nombre de Nueva Isabela en honor a la Reina Isabel de Castilla y Aragón, que financió el primer viaje de Colón.
Historical Note
Santo Domingo is the oldest European colonial city in the Western Hemisphere. It was established as capital of Spain’s first American colony for the brother of Christopher Colombus. It was initially called Nueva Isabela in honor of Queen Isabel of Castile and Aragon, who financed the first voyage of Columbus.

La Avenida George Washington, el Malecón
La avenida George Washington, el Malecón, corre a lo largo de la costa. Por un lado está el Mar Caribe y por el otro, los edificios de Santo Domingo.

George Washington Avenue, the Malecon, runs along the coast. On one side is the Caribbean Sea and on the other, the buildings of Santo Domingo.

El Alcázar de Colón
La estructura más importante del viejo pueblo es el Alcázar de Colón. Fue construido para Diego Colón, hijo de Cristóbal Colón.

The most important structure of the old town is the Alcazar de Columbus. It was built for Diego Columbus, son of Christopher Columbus.
El Faro a Colón
Construido en forma de cruz, el Faro a Colón es un monumento en honor al famoso explorador. Mide casi 210 metros de altura. También sirve como centro cultural.

Built in the shape of a cross, the Columbus Lighthouse is a monument in honor of the famous explorer. It measures almost 210 meters. It also serves as a cultural center.
La Catedral Primada
Esta catedral fue construida entre 1514 y 1544 y es uno de los mejores ejemplos de la arquitectura de Renacimineto español.

This cathedral was built between 1514 and 1544 and is one of the best examples of Spanish rebirth architecture.
La Fortaleza Ozama
Es la fortaleza militar más antigua de las Américas. La Torre del Homenaje, en el interior de la fortaleza, fue construida en 1503.

La bachata entre dominicanos es una reunión social y un género musical. Esta música refleja los temas de las áreas rurales pobres. La bachata es una música popular dónde se utilizan, entre otros, las guitarras, las maracas, el bongó, la tumbadora, y la güira. Se originó entre la gente considerada de clase baja. Hoy día la bachata, popularizada e internacional, aún refleja los temas de la vida diaria de las clases media y baja.

Dominican bachata is a meeting between social and musical genre. This music reflects the themes of the rural poor. Bachata is popular music where they use, among others, guitars, maracas, bongos, the drum, and the calabash. It originated among the people considered lower class. Today, bachata, internationally famous, still reflects the themes of the daily life of middle and lower classes.

En 1919 había sólo 2.717 casas en la zona colonial de Santo Domingo. Ahora hay aproximadamente tres millones de habitantes en la ciudad. Su época de mayor crecimiento abarca los últimos 50 años del siglo XX y se aceleró en 1917 con la construcción de las tres carreteras principales. Antes de 1920 la ciudad era pequeña y no podía competir con otras ciudades del país. Ciudad Nueva fue el primer barrio construido fuera de la atigua zona colonial.

In 1919 there were only 2,717 homes in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo. Now there are about three million people in the city. Its period of greatest growth encompasses the last 50 years of the twentieth century and accelerated in 1917 with the construction of the three main roads. Before 1920 the town was small and could not compete with other cities. New Town was the first neighborhood built outside the ancient colonial zone.

El merengue, baile nacional de la República Dominicana, tiene un ritmo contagioso y es mezcla de elementos africanos y europeos. El merengue surgió en salones de baile de alta sociedad en el siglo XIX y fue derivado de la contradanza europea. Imitando a la alta sociedad, los campesinos usaron los instrumentos musicales propios de su región para interpretar la música y la bailaban al estilo africano.
Identifica un género de música estadounidense que, al igual que el merengue, ha sido influenciado por ritmos africanos.

The merengue, the national dance of the Dominican Republic, has a contagious rhythm and is a mixture of African and European elements. Merengue grew in dance halls of high society in the nineteenth century and was derived from the European quadrille. Imitating high society, farmers used the musical instruments of its region to interpret the music and dancing African style.

Julia Álvarez, nacida en Nueva York, fue llevada a la República Dominicana cuando era muy pequeña. Huyendo del Presidente Trujillo volvió a Estados Unidos con sus padres a los diez años. Desde muy joven quería ser escritora. La autora escribe de sus experiencias como mujer domínico-americana, y latinoamericana. Actualmente es profesora de literatura en Middlebury College en Vermont.

Julia Alvarez was born in New York, and was taken to the Dominican Republic when she was very small. Fleeing the President Trujillo, she came to America with her parents at age ten. From a very young age she wanted to be a writer. The author writes of her experiences as a Dominican-American woman and Latin America. Currently she teaches literature at Middlebury College in Vermont.
