Section B – Fieldwork Investigation in Physical and Human Geography

Answer all questions.

In your answers to Section B you should include evidence from your fieldwork investigations in physical geography and human geography.

3. During their A level fieldwork investigation, a group of students undertook a study of two footpaths in the Lake District. The first was a popular tourist footpath; the second was in a less accessible location and not usually open to the general public. They used the hypothesis:

The popular tourist footpath will show more evidence of erosion than the less accessible footpath.

(a) Suggest how the students planned to investigate this hypothesis. [5]

The students measured the proportions of types of cover on each footpath, noting the percentage of bare earth, grass cover and bare rock. They took samples across sections of the footpaths.

(b) (i) Justify an appropriate sampling technique for collecting the data about footpath cover. [3]
