• Born in 1343• No one knows the exact date, it was supposedly in the year of

1400• Died between the ages of 56 and 57• In 1359-1360 Chaucer went to France with Edward III's army

during the Hundred Years' War. • He was captured in the Ardennes and returned to England

after the treaty of Brétigny in 1360.• There is no certain information of his life from 1361 until

1366, when he perhaps married Philippa Roet.• Philippa died in 1387

• Between 1367 and 1378 Chaucer made several journeys abroad on diplomatic missions

• He moved to Kent where he was appointed as justice of the peace. He was also elected to Parliament.

• During this time he wrote some of his best poetrey.

the English Language

Influences

Linguistic influences- Chaucer wrote in continental accentual-

syllabic meter, a style which had developed since around the twelfth century as an alternative to the alliterative Anglo-Saxon metre

- His poetry also helped standardize the London dialect

- He used English when other poets were still using Anglo-Saxon and Latin
