Geotextile

Page 2: Geo Textile

Introduction Geotextile are permeable fabrics which, when used in association

with soil have the ability to separate, filter, reinforce, protect or drain. Typically made from polypropylene or polyester. Geotextile fabrics come in 3 basic forms:

o Woven o Needle Punchedo Heat Bonded

Functions of Geotextiles

Filtration Drainage Separation Reinforcement Sealing

Page 4: Geo Textile

Filtration

The equilibrium geotextile to soil system that allows for adequate liquid flow with limited soil loss across the plane of geotextile over a service lifetime.

Page 5: Geo Textile

Drainage

Ability of non-woven geotextile whose 3 dimensional structure provides an avenue for flow of water through the plane of geotextile.

Page 6: Geo Textile

Separation

The introduction of flexible porous textiles placed between dissimilar materials so that the integrity and functioning of both materials can remain intact or be improved.

Page 7: Geo Textile

Reinforcement

In the reinforcement function, the geotextile is subjected to a sustained tensile force or load. Soil and rock materials are noted for their ability to withstand compressive forces and their relative low capacity for sustained tensile forces.

Page 8: Geo Textile

Sealing

The classic application of geotextiles as a liquid barrier is paved road rehabilitation.

It minimizes vertical flow of water into the pavement structure.

Design Properties

Puncture Strength Burst Strength Dynamic Puncture Apparent Opening Size Grab Tensile Strength and Elongation

Page 10: Geo Textile

Puncture Strength

To measure puncture resistance Stimulates puncture strength to static load of aggregates Resistance to puncture measured in Newton

Burst Strength

Stimulate strength of geotextile to a continuous hydraulic load Force causing rupture recorded in units of pounds per square inch or

kilopascal

Page 11: Geo Textile

Dynamic Puncture

To measure the strength of geotextile to falling objects Stimulate placement of aggregates over geotextile during installation stage

Apparent Opening Size

Reflects approximate largest opening dimension available through which the soil may pass

Grab Tensile Strength and Elongation

Measure tensile strength and elongation along the plane of the geotextile by loading it continually

Value of breaking load expressed in Newton and elongation at break in percent
