Also referred to as synthrock, electrorock or digital rock, is rock music generated with electronic instruments.

This genre has been highly dependent on technological developments, particularly the invention of the synthesizer.

Also the development of the MIDI digital format and computer technology.

In the late 1960’s rock musicians began using electronic instruments, like the Theremin and Mellotron. These

instruments would supplement and define their sounds.

By the end of the decade the Moog synthesizer took a leading sound of emerging progressive rock band which

would dominate rock in the early 1970’s.

After the arrival of punk rock, forms of basic synth rock emerged. Increasingly using new digital technology to

replace other instruments.

In the 1980’s more commercially oriented synth pop dominated electronic rock

In the 1990’s big beat and industrial rock were among the most important new trend and in the new millennium the

spread of recording software led to the development of new distinct genres including indie electronic, electroclash,

dance-punk and new rave.

In the late 1960’s, musicians started using electronic instruments in their own music. They used instruments such as the Theremin which has two antennas, one that

controlled the pitch and the other controlled the volume. The sounds made from the Theremin were also used in

early sci-fi films to create that eerie sound.

The Mellotron is an electro-mechanical, polyphonic tape replay keyboard originally developed and built in

Birmingham, England, in the early 1960’s. it was the worlds first sample-playback keyboard which was intended for

music.
