Genre Conventions.

“Romance.”

Establishing the Location: The setting for ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ is in America,

however they do travel to Amsterdam. This setting appears relaxing, beautiful and definitely somewhere to take a loved one. The idea of a long river, orange autumnal trees and boats along the sides of the river just seem like the perfect, romantic location.

Amsterdam setting:The sunny always appears to be shining whenever there is a happy scene:

Establishing the Main Character: The opening scene of a film will always allow the main

character the most screen time. It will focus on their story, and their life. ‘The Vow’, for example, follows the character of Paige who experiences a devastating car accident and is also shown meeting a guy.

The other characters are not introduced immediately, they tend to be introduced 5-6 minutes into the film, after the main character has been established.

Costume: In romance films, the costumes are simply to fit the

characters personality, there’s no set costume for romance films. However, some costumes throughout the play can establish the romance genre. However, every romantic film will include a date scene. This is where the characters will be dressed up and looking their best. The male character will stereotypically

be wearing a suit. ‘The Fault in Our Stars’.

This scene from ‘The Other Woman’, displays two dressed up characters. By their costume, the audience know they’re heading on a date. Notice that the femaleis wearing a red dress, the colour red is stereo typically linked to love and romance.

Props: A majority of romance films will include flowers.

Flowers are associated with love and romance, therefore they always appear in a romantic film. The type of flower that tends to be used are Roses one flower or a bunch of flowers, they are equality valuable.

They’re simply a sweet gesture that the male character does for the female.“The Other Woman”.“The Fault in Our Stars.”“The Best of Me”.

The Crisis. All romance films will have a crisis that the lead

character will have to over come within the film. For example; it could be saving their relationship.

In ‘The Fault in Our Stars’, the crisis is a terminal illness of a character.

The crisis in ‘The Other Woman’, it that a wife discovers her beloved husband is cheating on him with two other woman.

Finally, in ‘The Vow’, the main character is involved in a car crash, resulting in memory loss.
