ROMANCE

+Sound (Music)

Upbeat guitar music plays in the background of the trailer and then the crisp of the sound becomes more clear when the guitar man is shown on screen.

The music escalates louder when Hazel goes in to kiss Gus, emphasising the romantic moment being shared.

Usually in romance movies, the music that’s played during sad scenes would be extremely emotional tunes or well known songs that the audience have heard before so they feel more connection towards the scene they’re watching. This type of music is also used during positive moments for instance, part of this trailer. If That’s What You Wanted by One Republic is played which I’m sure many audiences have heard before.

The Fault In Our Stars

Sound sets the mood of a movie, and therefore

romantic films need a positive

lovey tune.

+ Setting

This is a cinema/theatre sign that appeared in the film opening The Vow. Cinemas/theatres are places that couples go to to watch new movies together, therefore this setting portrays a romance feel.

In this scene, a wedding is being portrayed through the woman and male facing each other in smart/glamorous outfits. This scene fits the title of the film The Vow.The setting is key in a romance movie as most setting shared

between a couple is based around their houses or places they spend

days out together.

The Vow

+ PropsA prop used in this trailer is a boat

to demonstrate the romantic event that the couple are sharing on a tranquil bed of water. Them both being in the water gives the impression that they’ve fallen in

which in their eyes would be funny, so the audience can see

that their love is like a friendship; fun and easy going, the best type

of love.

The Noteboo

k

Love letters are usually associated with a long distance relationship, which is one that occurred in The Notebook. It’s a prop that illustrates a traditional old romanticist which has a lot more meaning than a text message.

Props allow an audience to

gather a better understanding

of the characters’ relationship.

The props like the boat and love letters used in The

Notebook tell the audience

the couple are both very romantic.

+ Costume

One Day

The costume the characters are wearing here is quite old fashioned but trendy; suspenders and patterned dresses. The uniqueness

of their outfits portrays how their love could be quite old fashioned but wonderful.

Costume can contribute to the age of the characters that the

audience firstly assume. A male always wearing suits and shirts would convey him as being a sophisticated mature adult,

whereas if he were to wear jeans and tops and jackets instead of blazers it would portray him as being a younger boy perhaps in

late teens/early twenties.

Emma is demonstrated here as being quite a quirky and unique individual with her furred hood, floral top, pendant necklace, hoop earrings and circle framed glasses. From her costume I gather the impression of her character as being old school and interesting.

+ Stock Characters

You usually get a ditsy female who’s clumsy yet has a big heart. She’ll play the main character along with the guy she falls in love with.

A handsome man with a humorous

personality who’s extremely caring to make all the girls who’s watching the movie drool, is always featured in

a romance movie. Yum.

The main character, whether that be a

boy or a girl, always has a best friend

either at the beginning or through the

duration of the movie.

Stock characters are the typical types of characters that you’d find in a certain movie. In a romance

movie, the types of characters you find are a father figure, a best

friend, and the personality of the romance couple. These have all

been demonstrated.

The father figure who influences the main character’s decisions above their love life.
