FLAG FACTSThe United States Flag, adopted on June 14, 1777, is the fourth oldest national flag in the world. Denmark’s flag, adopted in 1219, is the oldest.
• A flag expert is called a “vexillologist.”• The blue field on the U.S. Flag is called the “union.”• On Memorial Day (the last Monday in May), to honor all who died in battle, the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff for the remainder of the day.• Since 1834, the U.S. Flag has flown continuously next to the grave of the Revolutionary War hero, the Marquis de Lafayette, near Paris, France.• June 14 was proclaimed Flag Day by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. While Flag Day was a popular celebration in scores of communities for many years after Wilson’s proclamation, it didn’t receive its official Congressional designation until 1949.
The United States Flag should always be treated with the utmost care and respect. Remember, the flag represents a living country, and as such, is considered a living thing.
• Always display the flag with the blue union field up – never display the flag upside down, except as a distress signal.• Always hold the flag carefully – never let it touch anything beneath it: the ground, the floor, water or merchandise.• Always keep the flag aloft and free – never carry it flat or horizontally.• Always keep the flag clean and safe – never let it become torn, soiled or damaged.• Always dispose of a flag properly, preferably through veterans’ organizations.• Always treat the flag with respect. Never use it for advertising purposes. Never embroider it on household items or pieces of clothing. Never use it as part of a costume or athletic uniform. However, it is proper to attach a flag patch to the uniform of military personnel, fire fighters, police officers and members of other patriotic organizations – provided the patch is properly affixed.

Dear Dr. Truth:My whole life I was told don’t talk to strangers. Do not get in the car with strangers. Then, I was taught not to talk to strangers on the computer. Definitely do not date strangers that I did not talk to on the computer. So I haven’t done any of the above mentioned. Yet it is acceptable for me to Uber?!? Isn’t that contacting a stranger via computer and paying them to get in their car? Uber It
Dear Uber It,No one said it was acceptable. Call a cab from a reputable cab company. They have dispatchers and legit business dealings. The more the merrier…AND THAT’S THE TRUTH!

Before firing up your grill this season, the National Propane Gas Association reminds you to stay safe while barbecuing. Before lighting your propane grill, a few precautions will help ensure hours of safe grilling. First, clean and check the burners and all connections on your gas grill. Use a soap and water mixture to make sure they are not leaking. Check the hoses to make sure they are not cracked, brittle or damaged. And make sure the connection between your grill and tank is tight. You can sometimes smell a leak in your grill before you see it because an odor has been added to propane to help you detect any leaks. When you are finished grilling, don't forget to turn off the propane tank, and remember to store cylinders upright in a cool place. This simple list of do's and don'ts can help make all of your barbecues successful:
• Do follow the manufacturer's grilling instructions for safe grilling. • Don't grill close to the house or other structures and don't place your grill on a surface that will burn. • Do store your propane cylinders upright in a cool place away from the grill and outside. • Don't use your grill inside a structure or store cylinders there. • Don't let children play near a hot grill. • Do take empty cylinders to trained professionals for filling and repairs.

Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration
of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts,
baseball games, family reunions, political speeches and ceremonies, and various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the national day of the United States.
During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia. After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a committee of five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the Declaration, finally approving it on July 4th. A day earlier, John Adams had written to his wife Abigail: The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more. Adams’s prediction was off by two days. From the outset, Americans celebrated independence on July 4th, the date shown on the much-publicized Declaration of Independence, rather than on July 2nd, the date the resolution of independence was approved in a closed session of Congress.
Historians have long disputed whether Congress actually signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, even though Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin all later wrote that they had signed it on that day. Most historians have concluded that the Declaration was signed nearly a month after its adoption, on August 2, 1776, and not on July 4th as is commonly believed.

Ticks and Tick DiseaseFrom late spring through early fall is the time of year during which ticks are most
active. It is important to take precautions to avoid a tick bite and the possibility of resultant tick disease.
Ticks commonly found in the northeastern area of the United States include the deer tick, lone star tick, American dog tick, and the wood tick. Ticks are most commonly found in the woods and marshy places in bushes, shrubs, leaf litter and tall grass. Many tick-borne diseases can be contracted simultaneously from one tick bite, but not every tick bite transmits disease. Some ticks are extremely small – the tick that transmits Lyme disease may be smaller than a sesame seed.
In order to enjoy the outdoors and at the same time avoid tick bites, wear long pants and long sleeves to help keep ticks off your skin. Tuck your shirt into pants, and pants into socks to keep ticks on the outside of clothing. Wear light colored clothing to help you spot ticks more easily. Spray insect repellent on clothes and exposed skin; consult your pharmacist for the type of repellent suitable for you and your family members of different ages. Also talk to your veterinarian about tick control products for your pets, to help avoid your pet bringing a tick into your home. When hiking, walk in the center of the trail when in woods or high grass. Stay away from brushy areas, high grass and leaf litter. Check for ticks daily after being in tick habitat. And remember, ticks can be found in your own back yard!
To remove a tick use fine tipped tweezers and protect your hands with tissues or gloves. Grab the tick close to the skin – do not twist or jerk the tick. Gently pull straight up until all parts of the tick are removed. Clean the tick bite with soap and water or an antiseptic. Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based rub. Do not use petroleum jelly, a hot match, nail polish or other products to remove ticks.
Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in Maryland and is transmitted by the bite of an infected black-legged tick, which must be attached for at least 24 hours for transmission to occur. From three to thirty days after a tick bite, a gradually expanding rash (called erythema migrans) can occur at the site of the bite in 70-80% of infected people. The rash can expand over several days up to 12 inches and may resemble a bull’s eye. If untreated, Lyme disease may cause a loss of muscle tone on one or both sides of the face, severe headaches and neck stiffness, shooting pains that can interrupt sleep, heart palpitations, dizziness, and pain that shifts from joint to joint. After several months, 60% of untreated patients my develop severe joint pain and swelling, particularly in the knees. Five percent of untreated patients may experience shooting pains, numbness or tingling in the hands or feet, and problems with concentration and short term memory.
Contact your health care provider if you develop any of these symptoms after a tick bite or after being in a tick habitat. Most cases of tick-borne disease can be cured with antibiotics, especially when treatment is started early.

June 29th-July 5thYour Weekly Horoscope By Sally Brompton
SALLY BROMPTON WEEKLY HOROSCOPE
Visit Sally at www.sallybrompton.com
IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS THIS WEEK:A Mars-Saturn link in your birthday week is a good omen for financial and career success,
but to get the best from it you will have to work harder than usual. It’s an effort worthmaking though, and the pleasure of testing your limits may be the biggest reward.
ARIES (March 21 - April 20):Challenge and opportunity are two sides of the same coin, and if you keep that thought in mind this week you should be able to turn almost any event to your advantage. Don’t moan that the universe is making life tough, because that’s what you need!
TAURUS (April 21 - May 21):Don’t try to force the pace, either in your personal life or at work, because the faster you go the more obstacles will pop up in your path. Slow right down and trust that you will arrive safely and soundly at your destination, and with time to spare.
GEMINI (May 22 - June 21):Make sure you know what you are letting yourself in for before signing up to some kind of movement or campaign. It may be a worthy cause, and it may be fun, but the planets warn it will demand of you more than you feel comfortable giving.
CANCER (June 22 - July 23):Someone you live or work with may have made a mess of a project you have been working on together but don’t get angry about it. It may be partly your fault for assuming they knew what they would be doing without checking them out first.
LEO (July 24 - Aug. 23):Mars in your fellow Fire sign of Aries will bring a new sense of urgency to your affairs, and in a good way, but other influences warn you must keep track of what you are doing every step of the way. Don’t rush Leo, there’s plenty of time.
VIRGO (Aug. 24 - Sept. 23):Some people may try to convince you this week that the world is falling apart but you are much too rational to fall for that kind of apocalyptic thinking. As far as you are concerned, the bigger the problem the more obvious the solution. So go find it!
LIBRA (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23):You will go all out to prove you have what it takes to succeed during the early part of the week. But is it really necessary? Are you trying to impress other people or prove something to yourself? Either way, don’t overdo it.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22):You will have a lot on your plate work-wise over the next few days but it won’t worry you one little bit. It seems the more that is demanded of you the more motivated you are to rise to the occasion. It’s not work for you, it’s fun.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 - Dec. 21):By all means aim to create something you can be proud of, but make sure you understand that you will accomplish far more if you work with other people. It’s not a zero sum game Sag – others don’t have to lose so that you can win.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20):You may be eager to push ahead with an idea that has been in your head for some time but while Saturn, your ruler, is still moving retrograde you are advised not to commit yourself too deeply just yet. There may be other ideas that suit you better.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19):No matter what you are doing, or where you are doing it, you must give yourself extra time this week. If you are the kind of Aquarius who enjoys leaving things to the very last minute you may find that on this occasion the deadline defeats you.
PISCES (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20):The planets will in some way remind you that what you get out of life is in direct proportion to what you choose to put it. This is one of those weeks when you cannot afford to be lazy. Things need to be done and they need to be done now!

Words For Reviewby Lanny Parks
Perhaps you are like I am these days - wondering where normal has gone, not only in our personal lives but in our cor-porate ones as well. We can not travel or visit or worship or gather as we used to and our days are spent mostly in our own homes and yards where the rest of the world seems to exist only on our screens. However, some of the images we have been seeing on those screens are not any more comfortable than our daily isolation has been.Fortunately, we have been able to raise our voices, even from our most separate spac-es, to demand some changes in our com-munities, our states, and our nation that have been way too long in coming to frui-tion. Unless a person has been living un-der a rock, there is no one who can claim not to understand what our issues are and realize that the ‘new normal’, whenever it comes, should look nothing like the old one. There is an old hymn that speaks to this new time: “Once to every man and na-tion comes the moment to decide...” Now is that time. The issues are basic to life: education, employment, housing, healthcare, envi-ronment, and justice. These are all-en-compassing. They matter to everyone. And still they are addressed in inequitable ways. Our current political climate is too fractured to address any of these issues in a comprehensive, corrective manner. Civil discourse is discouraged by name-calling and blame-slamming (if there is such a thing). We can see what ought to happen, but we cannot seem to make it happen while we sit outside the proverbial halls of power. Have you given any thought to the chang-es you would like to see? Have you com-municated those changes to anyone who might be able to influence them into be-ing? Have you shared them with others like yourself to form a coalition of advocates for specific changes? Could you join in a discussion with others without demanding
that your way is the only way? Would you not only speak, but listen?
We live in a very small community, relative-ly speaking, and yet we do not know each other. Our circle of friends and acquain-tances is a small fraction of the whole, and we have done little to widen that circle; but, now is the time. If not now, when?
Years ago the town sponsored a charette to discuss possible ways to address a lo-cal issue. Some gatherings have already been held recently as well. There need to be more. We need space and time to meet each other on neutral ground and discuss the changes we need to make in order to create a better town, a better county for each of us - and when we can agree on those changes and act on them, we can share them with the larger community of which we are a part: our region, our state, our nation. If not us, who?
Leslie Dwight has written a poem that is making the rounds on social media. May-be you have seen it. If not, I post it here in the hope that even during a medical pandemic about which we can do little but keep our distance and wear our masks, we can also begin to address the social is-sues that have made us sick for too long.
“What if 2020 is the year we’ve been waiting for? A year so uncomfortable, so painful, so scary, so raw — that it finally forces us to grow, “A year that screams so loud, finally awakening us from our ignorant slumber. “A year we finally accept the need for change. Declare change. Work for change. Become the change. “A year we finally band together, instead of pushing each other further apart.
“2020 isn’t cancelled, but rather the most important year of them all.”

The Star SpangledBanner
By Francis Scott Key 1814
Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early lightWhat so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet waveO’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:‘Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it waveO’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
And where is that band who so vauntingly sworeThat the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,A home and a country should leave us no more!Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slaveFrom the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth waveO’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall standBetween their loved home and the war’s desolation!Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued landPraise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall waveO’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

The white stars on the American flag symbolize the individual states. There is one star for each state in the union. There are currently 50, for the fifty states in the union. Whenever a new state joins, a new star is added to the flag on the following 4th of July. The last time that happened was on July 4, 1960; Hawaii having become a state in the latter part of 1959.
There are 13 stripes for the 13 original colonies. The white on the flag signifies purity and innocence. The red, for hardiness and courage, and the blue for perseverance and determination. Some people say that the red also represents the blood spilled to protect our country and our freedom. When you weave them together, you get the American Flag, the symbol for equality and freedom.
Nicknames for the flag include the “Stars and Stripes”, “Old Glory,” and “The Star-Spangled Banner” (also the name of the national anthem).

Who's Cookin’ With Carla?STUFFED ’MATERS
Medium, Large or Cherry Tomatoes - size doesn’t matterLettuce ~ Crispy Bacon
Grated Sharp CheeseMinced Onion
Salt and Pepper to taste Wash and dry the tomatoes. Cut around the stem area, deeply enough to allow for stuffing to be inserted. Tear lettuce and crispy bacon into very small pieces. Add the grated sharp cheese and minced onion. Season with salt and pepper. Just prior to serving, add a dab of your favorite mayonnaise – just enough to bind the mixture together. Stuff your ’maters! For variation add avocado, cucumber, shrimp…the possibilities are end-less! Another take…stuff with fresh mozzarella and minced basil tossed with a little balsamic vinegar and oil, and salt and pepper to taste; garnish with basil.

The summer season is here and with this comes the potential for seri-ous health problems. These include prickly heat and heat rash, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Prickly heat or heat rash is a painful condition that usually appears in the folds of the skin. It is a sign that the body is not dealing with the heat and is at greater risk for a heat stroke. Treatments include cool bathing, thorough drying and using a talc or other body powder.
Heat exhaustion is a milder form of heat related illness that occurs because of a combination of high temperatures and inadequate re-placement of fluids. Symptoms include extreme weakness, nausea, headache, and the person may or may not vomit or faint. The skin is moist and cool and the body temperature is normal or only slightly high. To treat, rest in a cool shaded area and drink plenty of liquids. Check with your doctor especially if other health problems are present.
Heat Stroke is the most serious heat related illness and is a medical emergency. The symptoms include a body temperature of over 105 degrees, dry red skin, confusion, irritability and coma. The onset may be very rapid, within minutes. Treatment includes calling 911 and try-ing to lower the body temperature rapidly by using a cold bath or wet towels. Keep the victim in a cool area.
Preventative measures include: drinking plenty of fluids such as water and fruit juice to prevent dehydration; wearing loose fitting, lightweight and light colored clothing; protecting yourself from direct sunlight by wearing wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts, pants and sunglasses or by staying in shaded areas; being aware that alcohol can impair the body’s sweat mechanism, as can antihistamines taken for allergies and diuretics prescribed for high blood pressure; avoiding over exer-tion of yourself when outdoors. People who work outdoors should, if possible, take short breaks if they feel fatigued. Schedule physical activity during the cooler parts of the day.

The Mainstay returns to presenting concerts live from Rock Hall on Friday, June 26th at 7:00pm. All concerts will be streamed live from Kent County’s favorite live music venue via a private uplink available through The Mainstay’s web-site. Tickets are $5 online/advance. Information and ticket sales are available on The Mainstay’s website at www.mainstayrockhall.org.
Like so many businesses and organizations, The Mainstay has been deeply affected by the COVID-19 crisis, cancelling all concerts begin-ning mid-March. Since March 30th, The Main-stay has been offering free concerts live on its Facebook page every Monday evening from
performers’ homes and will continue to provide these unique musical evenings, keeping the tradition of Mainstay Monday going. However, the intimate nature of The Mainstay and the very act of producing music in a cozy space have made it impossible to continue the Mainstay’s central mission of providing world class live music to Kent County and beyond from our stage…until now!
The Mainstay is producing a series of concerts from its stage direct to the listen-er’s home via a private high quality live video stream. The kick off performance for this new venture in virtual entertainment will be with local heroes made good, The High and Wides. The High and Wides concert scheduled for March 14th was to have premiered the much anticipated Hedgelawn Bluegrass Series. Since theirs was the first concert to be cancelled due to COVID-19, it’s only fitting that the High and Wides be brought in to get things fired up again in style!
The High & Wides project a big, driving sound – mountain musical traditions re-imagined for a new century. Formed on Maryland’s Eastern Shore in 2015, they write music about arson and hourly motels, dystopian love songs, and ballads of violent history. The High & Wides draw from their members’ extensive backgrounds in bluegrass and take the music to a place all their own, recalling an era when old-time, rockabilly, and proto-rock’n’roll coexisted in a murky soup of hillbilly string band music. Members include Marc Dykeman (guitar, vocals), Sam Guthridge (banjo, mandolin, vocals), Nate Grower (fiddle), and Mike Buccino (bass).
The Mainstay (Home of Musical Magic) is the friendly informal storefront perform-ing arts center on Rock Hall’s old time Main Street. It is a 501(c)(3), nonprofit dedi-cated to the arts and committed to presenting local, regional and national level talent, at a reasonable price. Information for supporting The Mainstay through the COVID-19 crisis can be found at www.mainstayrockhall.org/sponsors.
The Mainstay Re-Opens for Livestream Concerts with The High
and Wides on Friday, June 27th
The High and Wides’ concert at The Mainstay will be livestreamed via a private uplink available on The Mainstay’s website.

The Dollar General Literacy Foun-dation recently awarded Horizons of Kent and Queen Anne’s a $3,000 grant to support summer literacy. This local grant is part of more than $8.6 million in grants awarded to more than 950 schools, nonprofits, and organizations across the com-munities Dollar General serves.
“We are thrilled to partner with Dollar General Literacy Founda-tion to provide targeted reading support for our promising stu-dents this summer,” shared Amy Crowding, Executive Director of Horizons of Kent and Queen Anne’s. “Our reading specialists are getting ready to provide en-gaging lessons to promote the joy of reading and eliminate the sum-mer slide. We are very grateful to the Dollar General Literacy Foun-dation for their generous grant to support our work.”
This will be the 25th year that Ho-rizons has provided academic and enrichment opportunities for un-derserved students in grades Pre-K through 8. Their traditional in-person program is hosted by the Kent School, The Gunston School, and Washington College during 6-weeks in the summer. This year due to the coronavirus, Horizons will be offering a “Horizons at Home” summer learning program to keep students reading, think-ing and exploring during the sum-mer to prepare them for success during the upcoming school year. Horizons will use the grant to em-ploy reading specialists to provide an extra layer of support for strug-gling readers and promote reading as a pathway to a brighter future.
“During these extraordinary times, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation remains steadfast in its commitment to support com-munities’ literacy and educational advancements through funds that will impact thousands of students across the country,” said Todd Va-

Soroptimist International of Kent & Queen Anne’s Counties has selected Skylar Podraza as the Kent Island High School award winner. Skylar received a $500 award to help her with college expenses. This award is based solely on community service.
Skylar is a senior at Kent Island High School and has been a strong volunteer. Skylar says that the volunteer work she has been involved in was very heartwarming, sometimes eye-opening, and always fulfilling.
In middle school she helped her family make daily lunches for “Our Haven Homeless Shelter” and once a week she volunteered at the Animal Resource Foundation (ARF). Feeling a need to do more she expanded into care packages of gloves, scarves, toiletries, and free meal cards from restaurants. Every Christmas she personally delivers them to the shelter.
Throughout her High School years, she was an active member of Interact Club, helping with
Queen Anne’s County Public Schools (QACPS) Superintendent Dr. Andrea M. Kane announced the promotion of program supervisor, Susan Walbert, to serve as principal of Church Hill Elementary School for the 2020-2021 school year. Ms. Walbert oversaw the Title I, Title III, PreK-2 Reading, and Migrant Education programs since 2017, and has experience as an elementary school teacher and counselor.
“We are fortunate to have talented and experienced educators, like Ms. Walbert, ready to lead schools and support children regardless of the challenges ahead,” Dr. Kane said. “She has the instructional leadership capacity to ensure that Church Hill Elementary is a safe,
children in need, Toys for Tots, Rise Against Hunger, Personal Needs, Coat Drive, and Adopt-A-Bear.
Feeling a need to do more with children she became involved with “Character Counts”. At the beginning of her junior year she wanted to work with a classroom of children as a Character Counts Coach. Quickly she learned that there were no “minors”– teenagers that had ever been a coach in Queen Anne’s County Public Schools – and it was something they had never considered. After a lot of paperwork and breaking new ground, Skylar became the first “Teen Character Counts Coach” in Queen Anne’s Public Schools. She is now in her second year at Kent Island Elementary School coaching a first grade class.
In addition to being a Character Counts Coach in QACPS, Skylar is a member of the National Honor Society and Student Government President for the Class of 2020.
Congratulations Skylar!
healthy learning environment where students can grow and achieve at high academic levels.”
Ms. Walbert began her career as a third-grade teacher at Kennard Elementary School. During her 14 years at Kennard Elementary, she worked in the roles of special education teacher/IEP chairperson, school counselor, and teacher specialist. She also taught at Sudlersville Elementary School, where she was a teacher specialist and lead-teacher of the Migrant Education Program. She served as a teacher specialist at Sudlersville Middle School.
