GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS (GMO)

Advantages and Disadvantages of GMO

 GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS (GMO)

OR

 GENETICALLY ENGINEERED ORGANISM (GEO)

is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques.

Page 3: Genetically Modified Organisms

These techniques, generally known as recombinant DNA technology, use DNA molecules from different sources, which are combined into one molecule to create a new set of genes.

This DNA is then transferred into an organism, giving it modified or novel genes. Transgenic organisms, a subset of GMOs, are organisms which have inserted DNA that originated in a different species.

 ADVANTAGES

Disease could be prevented by detecting people/plants/animals that are genetically prone to certain hereditary diseases, and preparing for the inevitable. Also, infectious diseases can be treated by implanting genes that code for antiviral proteins specific to each antigen.

Genes could also be manipulated in trees for example, to absorb more CO2 and reduce the threat of global warming.

Nature is an extremely complex inter-related chain consisting of many species linked in the food chain. Some scientists believe that introducing genetically modified genes may have an irreversible effect with consequences yet unknown.

 Disadvantages

, "The DNA of genetically modified plants may contain the genes of insects, animals or even viruses. These products may potentially cause harm to your health. Look for the 'GMO-free' sign on the package."

Genetic engineering borderlines on many moral issues, particularly involving religion, which questions whether man has the right to manipulate the laws and course of nature.
