Genetic Engineering Introduction

You will be split up into different groups. You and your group will research one specific

area of Genetic Engineering.

It is your group's job to look at the attached handouts located under "TASKS

Each group will present their research through a power point presentation.

There are resources that I have found for each group. Use these to your advantage, but

please remember to cite your sources correctly.

*HERE IS A FUN ACTIVITY FOR EVERYONE*

Task You will be divided into groups that will be assigned to you in class.

Each group will be assigned a certain subject area of Genetic Engineering for

research. It is your job as your group to fully research this subject area and

how Genetic Engineering is being used.

Each group will be doing a 15-25 slide PowerPoint presentation on your

subject area.

Each group will be asked to explain the history of their subject area, the role

of Genetic Engineering, how it is being used in society today, and the ethical

issues/dilemmas facing it.

GENETIC ENGINEERING

SPECIFIC SUBJECT AREA:

ELIMINATING GENETIC DISEASES

-Scientists are developing techniques to treat and cure genetic diseases through

genetic surgery and genetic therapy. Genetic diseases arise from a number of

causes, whether single-gene defects or sex-linked diseases. Genetic Engineering

offers a solution of eventually curing these genetic defects.

-It is your group’s job to research this promising solution. Your group will research

and present a 15-25 slide power point presentation on your research to the rest of

the class. Your research will consist of the following:

-Beginning steps taken in eliminating genetic diseases (basic history; when

and how did this begin?).

-Specific Genetic Engineering processes currently being used.

-Current examples of successes or failures in the attempt to eliminate/cure

genetic diseases.

-Pros & Cons your group concluded from your research.

-Ethical issues/dilemmas facing this issue.

-This project is worth 50 points. You will be graded according to the rubric

available in the Webquest.

-Incorporating animations, videos, and other forms of media to support your

research is STRONGLY suggested.

-Resources specifically for your subject area can also be found on the Web quest.

Feel free to use other resources, as long as they are scientifically accurate and

approved. (Government websites, National science websites, Educational websites,

etc.., no Wikipedia!)

GENETIC ENGINEERING

SPECIFIC SUBJECT AREA:

GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS: ANIMALS

-Oh yes, they are out there! Genetically modified animals, also known as

transgenic animals, have been genetically modified to create new characteristics.

These animals are playing an important role in society in relation to our

advancement in medicine, but there are many concerns relating these animals and

society as well.

-It is your group’s job to research the role of Genetic Engineering in these

transgenic animals and their impact on society. You will present a 15-25 slide

power point presentation of your research to the rest of the class. Your research

will consist of the following:

-Beginning steps taken in the Genetic Engineering of animals (basic

history; when and how did this begin?).

-Specific and current examples of Genetically Modified Animals.

-Failures (if any) that have occurred while trying to “modify” animals.

-Pros & Cons that your group has concluded from your research.

-Ethical issues/dilemmas facing this issue.

-This project is worth 50 points. You will be graded according to the rubric

available in the Web quest.

-Incorporating animations, videos, and other forms of media to support your

research is STRONGLY suggested.

GENETIC ENGINEERING

SPECIFIC SUBJECT AREA:

GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS: FOOD

-Oh yes, they are out there! You may even be eating them! Genetically modified

foods have been thought of as the “solution” to the current food shortage in many

parts of the world due to “over-population”. Whether or not these are deemed safe

and how we can know if we are consuming them are current issues.

-It is your group's job to research the role of Genetically Engineered foods and

their impact on society. You will present a 15-25 slide power point presentation of

your research to the rest of the class. Your research will consist of the following:

-Beginning steps taken in Genetic Engineering of food (basic history;

when and how did this begin?).

-Current foods being used in agriculture and in society.

-How has this impacted the agricultural industry?

-Pros & Cons that your group has concluded from your research

-Ethical issues/dilemmas facing this issue.

-This project is worth 50 points. You will be graded according to the rubric

available in the Web quest.

-Incorporating animations, videos, and other forms of media to support your

research is STRONGLY suggested.

GENETIC ENGINEERING

SPECIFIC SUBJECT AREA: MEDICINE

-There are many applications of Genetic Engineering in medicine and healthcare

alone. Progress in this field has had a great impact in technology in many ways and

contributed to benefiting mankind. Many medicines and treatments are only

available because of Genetic Engineering. Using Genetic Engineering in medicine

has the potential to do things that certain drugs can’t.

-It is your group’s job to research these current treatments and potential promises.

Your group will research and present a 15-25 slide power point presentation of

your research to the rest of the class. Your research will consist of the following:

-Beginning steps taken in medicine advancement involving Genetic

Engineering (basic history; how and when did this begin?).

-Specific medicines that are currently in use due to this advancement.

-Current examples of successes/failures in the attempt to manufacture.

New medicines due to Genetic Engineering, and any side effects from

patients who have used these medicines.

-Pros & Cons that your group concluded from your research.

-Ethical issues/dilemmas facing this issue.

-This project is worth 50 points. You will be graded according to the rubric

available in the Web quest.

-Incorporating animations, videos, and other forms of media to support your

research is STRONGLY suggested.

CONCLUSION

As you can see after completing this project, more research and debate needs to be

done regarding the moral, ethical, and legal considerations of genetic engineering.
