    A SHORT COURSE ON

    Genetic Algorithms for EngineeringOptimization

    INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGYKANPUR

    2629 APRIL, 2006

ObjectivesGenetic algorithms (popularly known as GAs) have nowgained immense popularity in real-world engineeringsearch and optimization problems all over the world. Dueto globalization of our economy, Indian industries arenow facing design challenges not only from their nationalcounterparts but also from the international market. Tosurvive in the steep competition, they can no longer af-ford to adopt just any feasible solution obtained usuallyby trial-and-error means, they have to choose an optimalsolution which is best (from cost, performance, safety, etc.) compared to any other solution.

Genetic algorithms are computerized search and opti-mization methods that work very similar to the principlesof natural evolution. Based on Darwins survival-of-the-fittest principles, GAs intelligent search procedure findsthe best and fittest design solutions, which are otherwisedifficult to find using other techniques. GAs are attrac-tive in engineering design and applications because theyare easy to use and they are likely to find the globallybest design or solution, which is superior to any other de-sign or solution. Some of the GA applications includemechanical component design, structure design, processdesign, planning, job shop scheduling, VLSI design, con-trol systems, electrical power systems, pattern recogni-tion, classification problems, protein folding, neural net-work design, operations research, and machine learning.GAs are also suitable for multi-objective optimal designproblems, involving multiple objectives.

This short course is designed to introduce a number ofpopular optimization methods used in design, emphasizethe importance of optimization in engineering activities, introduce the working principles of GAs, present GA ap-plications/case studies from a wide variety of engineer-ing problems. Adequate hands-on exposure on computersimulations and relevant softwares (PC-based) will be

  • provided so that upon completion of the course the par-ticipants can use GAs in their day-to-day activities.

This course is offered once every year at IIT Kanpur andis one of its kind in India. All instructors are world-renowned experts in the area actively doing consultancystudies with Indian industries in the area. Participantswill learn the state-of-the-art GA techniques and willhave an opportunity to have an hands-on experience com-puter softwares.

Who shall Attend?Anyone interested in using optimization techniques intheir day-to-day engineering problem solving activities.

    Topics

Introduction to Optimal DesignNeed of Optimization in DesignOptimization MethodsGenetic AlgorithmsAdvanced GA Techniques (multi-objective optimization,

scheduling, global optimization)Engineering and Management Case Studies using GAsTutorials/Laboratory Exercises

A book, relevant papers, and softwares will be providedto each participant for a better understanding and futurereference to most of the above topics. Adequate timewill be spent to discuss solution procedure of specificproblems of interests to the participants. In the past, such discussions led to development of very efficient anduseful solution techniques and softwares.

CoordinatorProf. Kalyanmoy Deb has been working on GAs for last17 years and has worked with pioneers in the field in Eu-rope and USA. Prof. Deb is primarily responsible forintroducing GAs in Indian academia and industries. Heis an author of two text-books on optimization (Wiley:London and Prentice-Hall: Delhi). He has written over150 articles on GAs. He is associate editors of all threejournals in the field and editorial board member of Engi-neering Optimization journal. He is also actively engagedin working with industries in India and abroad (such asSTMicroelectronics, Italy, British Telecom, UK, GeneralMotors, Tata Steel etc.). Prof. Deb and other renownedfaculty members at IIT Kanpur will be the instructors forthe course.

RegistrationPersons interested in attending the course should fill theattached registration form and send it with a cheque ordraft worth Rs. 8,000/- (Rs. 6,000/- for academic partici-pants and Rs. 4,000/- for students with a limited numberof seats with a valid identity card) in favour of Coordina-tor, Continuing Education Program, IIT Kanpur, payableat the State Bank of India, IIT Kanpur to the followingaddress before 10 April, 20061:
