DESCRIPTION

Our first official issue has been entitled to reflect the fact this is our beginning, and in the beginning, there was a blank canvas, bit by bit, piece by piece, stroke by stroke, a colourful life form was created.

Well well wel... we are FINALLY HERE!! (We thought we would arrive with the London spring!)

Firstly, let me take this opportunity to say a HUGE THANK YOU to all of you whom have chosen subMISSION as your showcase platform. We launched with our Issue ZERO in February 2013 and since then, your creative energy

has been a major inspiration and for that, I will be forever grateful!

Genesis - In my mind; the beginning, and in the beginning, there was a blank canvas, a sketchbook, a journal, a neutral space to create. I wanted to see, understand and appreciate what Genesis meant to you and more importantly,I wanted to visually indulge in your interpretations. Every contribution has been executed beautifully and is truly a reflection of our future direction. I very much look forward to your continued support on this here journey of

growth and development.

MASSIVE thanks you to all of our AMAZING contributors this issue would be lost without you.

Special thanks to the subMISSION crew Homaira, Sam, Maame, Naomi, Rachel and Rob for their most invaluable support and input.

The spiral of your lifeline springs

From the rivers of nothingness

Aligned with destiny,

History tries to tell your tale,

Her story rarely prevails.

You clasp onto open spaces

Hoping to climb to new heights,

But who will notice your life?

Dirty, sick-coloured infancy,

Your wet entrails leave traces of your crawl.

Fresh youth sans beauty,

Raggedy, rough

Limp, forlorn,

Easily trampled,

Easily ignored.

Unwelcomed.

The crowd is blind to your bleating,

Turning their noses

One hundred and eighty degrees.

Tip-toeing away.

This is your concourse,

Hard rocks are wished on,

Ready dots to connect on fluid ground.

Lifelines for inelegant leap-frog,

Closer to the bridge to solid land.

Zaneta Denny

This is your Genesis

FAQ IV | 2012 | Acrylic silkscreen on polyester | 152.5 x 102cm

Ipswich; birthplace to artist Justin Eagle born in 1977

Justin's father was a photography enthusiast who had taken to capturing beautiful images long before

Justin was born. Such was his passion for the art that Mr Eagle turned a part of his home kitchen into

a darkroom.

Justin was just 12 years old when he started on his journey with photography. He saved to buy his first

enlarger and although he didn't know it yet, it was evident that the beginnings of this creative experience

would then become his life long career.

Page 139: Genesis | Issue One

" I was not very academic and my

school teacher Mr Dockerill really

helped to open things up. "Justin contributes his success to his school teacher

who he says was an incredible driving force. Their

love for Jazz music was a common dominator, and

to this day, they are still in touch.

Justin found that his interests lie more in the

art and creativity side of visuals rather than the

commercial aspect. Although the journey started on

a traditional foot he later transitioned into shooting

subjects in a more abstract fashion.

The use of Justin's abstract photography language is

still vested into creating every piece of art; as is the

need for presenting artwork on a full scale format.

This structure derives from Justin's childhood

experiences where he placed all his images

onto an enlarger to gain a deeper and more

intimate reading of his subject.

Page 140: Genesis | Issue One

"A foot is your connection to

the world every time you take a

step. "

This footprint represents the mark of Justin's presence

and his need for that presence to be felt in his

creative working space. In Justin's view, it is also

about how and why we adorn ourselves and whether

or not adornment creates a barrier between that

sacred world connection.

Justin describes the piece as primal; the first mark of

a human on the earth; caveman like; in the beginning,

there was the world and then there was man.

We thought that piece was a perfect fit for our

Genesis issue Mr Justin Eagle... WE SALUTE YOU!

You kissed me like the Suns breath, echoing on solar winds.

Hotter than the surface of its celestial father,

Enchanting the skies for many hours after.

Eruptions, the corruption of radiating particles,

Sideswiping dark space and low trajectory articles.

Protons and electrons smashed together in fission,

The decision to abort mission slips carelessly from vision

In tune with the cosmos, our energy runs volcanic, our affections

A salvations, for natural selection.

In tune with the cosmos and alive with the music

The microwave background, sweet noises of dark matter

Plucked then played Arco Pianissimo, our convo

Lifts skywards, fortissimo.

L'amour est un oiseau rebelle,

Exploding like the Arora Borealis ascends

Like curtains from mountains the fountains of light

Climbs skywards in trends, and colours and lines and bursts or spectacular.

Yes like Carmen's gypsy bird of rebellious nature,

Did in deed slay the soldier, seduced with a kiss

Carried on the wings like of the opera of 4 quarters.

Though our, pause. Celestial exchange takes place on an asteroid

Amidst, Saturn's unbuckling belt I felt inexplicably earthbound

After waking up with you. My vernacular limited,

Like the ancients' knowledge of retrograde loops

When the earth sat centre before the alignment was set right.

And thus into; my alignment you descended and brought back visions

Past things now ended but reminded, by the soft and subtle way that you kissed me

Left me blissfully, aware, that you're into me.

And here now, see our friendship floats free

A supernova of a train-wreck, almost car crash like catastrophe,

Some kind of Black-hole all engulfing time consuming wonder of nature

Just going with the flow I guess, you know?

Baby! I've got to go,

I'll talk to you later.

Photographer

Hey Rob, thank you for your contribution

to subMISSION Magazine.

How long you have been a Photographer?

My photographic career comes in two

parts; what I call pre-accident and post-

accident. I was an active photographer

from the age of 5 up until I was 22

when I was hit by a car during a training

session (I was a professional cyclist).

I put my camera and everything else

away for 23 years then life changed

for me at age 45 when I was handed

my friend's camera to hold whilst they

looked for a lens. It was honestly like a

lightning bolt surging through my body

as I held that camera up to my eye. All

of my passion for the camera and the

photograph came back and I haven't

put it down since.

In Photographic terms, who are you

inspired by?

Ansel Adams to is me the greatest

photographer that has ever lived. His

creations where produced before all

of the modern technology we all take

for granted today. His images are truly

out of this world and touch my soul. I

was first introduced to his work by my

late sister Robin, decades ago. I had

a litho of 'Moonrise over Hernandez'

and 'Half Dome' decorating my walls

by the age of 9 and about 10 of his

books. Even though we have very

different shooting styles, his eye for

detail and amazing subject matters

influence every photograph I take.

rob macneildistorium

We had a quick 5 minutes with Canadian photographer Rob MacNeil.

Page 156: Genesis | Issue One
Page 157: Genesis | Issue One
Page 158: Genesis | Issue One
Page 159: Genesis | Issue One

What inspired the Distortium piece?

I felt that this series was the next logical

step from my popular Aquos series

(shhhh don't tell anyone but I have

already arranged for your readers to be

the first to see Aquos 2 before anyone

else does!). This series encompasses

my search for fluidity in all that

surrounds us, but on a daily basis in the

urban jungle. These are images I saw

almost every day for a few weeks during

nonstop rain cycle. I spent about a

week trying to capture it and finally

created a series I was excited about.

Where can we find more of your work?

The best place to see more of my work

is on my website, follow me on Twitter

@mycamerahatesme for sneak peeks of

my shots before they go into publications

around the world.

Fashion Designer and Illustrator

poppy warwicker -le bretonsuper collider

Fashion Design (BA & MA) graduate Poppy brings to us the illustrations of her final BA collection titled

The Post-Raphaelites which was sponsored by Pantone and showcased at Fashion Scout during London

Fashion Week September 2012.

The collection received a considerable amount of press and was nominated for the prestigious Zandra

Rhodes Textiles Award and won Best Garment at the Manchester Graduate Show. Her work has also been

published in named publications such as Fast Forward Fashion Magazine, ArtBox Magazine and Volume

Magazine.

Poppy's illustration style provokes a dialogue by challenging and pushing the boundaries of what fashion

potentially could be.

Inspired by the infamous digital collage artist Julien Pacaud, the first illustration depicts

those of us where change is obligatory due to the natural inevitable progressions of life and

the second image where one needs to work hard to achieve their desired new beginning.

Discipline has left the classroom

He's gone and left the building

We don't see him anymore

Has somebody just killed him?

Government stopped his services

Let the children out the box

Verse them in their legal rights

Oh bless their cotton socks

You can't tell little Johnny

He don't know Discipline

But he'll quote you the book of law

The teacher's wearing thin

Now Discipline they want him back

But I think it's a little late

Because now Respect has joined him

Oh we're in a state!

When London Fashion Week arrives,

it becomes the epicentre for the weird and

the wonderful. While at its heart are the

catwalk shows where next seasons styles

are defined, the venue also becomes a

magnet for anyone who wants to be seen.

London's Somerset House is descended

upon by a colourful array of fashion

scenesters, each one attempting to out do

the rest with the most outrageous displays

of style. Whilst it is these individuals who

make this superficial circus the fantastical

sight that it has now become, it's the

photographers who feed the frenzy.

From the hardened professional who's

spent years in the catwalk pit shooting

for their magazine clients, to the bloggers

who are trying to get their 'Street Style

'websites on the map. Fashion Week is the

place to be for anyone with a camera and

a mission to capture the sights and sounds

of this bizarre event.

Photographer Chris Brock turned this

maelstrom of attention seeking on its

head, and rather than sate the appetites of

those seeking to find fame, he turned his

camera on the photographers themselves.

Shot at Somerset House at the height of

Fashion Week, his series of photographs

document the picture takers and what

they're wearing.

Biography

Chris Brock is a creative portrait photographer based in London and working around the

As an actor working both in London and L.A, I have always been susceptible, as all actors are, to

the pressures of an industry that values image and aesthetic perfection over talent. This insecurity

has always unconsciously and rather unavoidably tinged the artwork I produce, especially when

using myself as the subject of a piece. The Pursuit series are self-portraits, in which I suppose

I seek to capture a perfected impression or version of myself. That might be regarded as self-

indulgent but it is really a way to release insecurities about those physical imperfections I

perceive myself to have and which I believe to be under constant scrutiny.

So the series focuses specifically on the male structure of the face, and the faces were

constructed in a way that almost resembles these Adonis figures of aesthetic male perfection.

The faces represent a constant need to aspire to physical improvement and perfection, with the

paradox of never actually attaining it. So I suppose it's a futile pursuit of beauty, but the whole

concept of pursuit can be read in more sinister ways. That's important because we now live in a

grossly superficial world where the surgical pursuit of beauty sees a progressive violation of reality

and traditional values. I think there's angst, a rawness to the portraits; something restless and

deceptively confronting about them which naturally comes from my style of juxtaposing darkness

with an unexpected vibrancy of colour.

In relation to the Genesis theme, I suppose the Pursuit series works as a distortion of beginnings.

We are born into the world as innocent, natural and untainted human beings - only to be shaped

and corrupted by the manufactured pressures of a culture that tells us to pursue superficial and

material things.

This painting represents a very dark time in my life, probably one of the rawest and

most heart-wrenching periods. The painting was created post a very abusive six year

relationship - the artwork realisation was to help purge the years of emotional, physical and

psychological abuse.

My heart felt like it had been wrenched out. The pain was so deep; it was as if I were holding

my bloody and battered heart with the last bit of strength I could muster.

The blood dripping from the eyes is representative of tears. The blood seeping from the

mouth represents the abuse. The lamb conveys feelings of deceit and manipulatation the

wool was being pulled over my eyes.

For me, the creative process consisted of creating many layers of texture, each texture

representing a different mood and emotion. The final product embodies my emotional

journey.

Evil comes in many forms, shapes and sizes. Believe in yourself and surround yourself with

those who truly love and care for you no matter what.

Whispers dance around

And I am open to the sounds

I breathe in the air

I let go of my fears

This is my beginning

I threw away the old me

The rules that used to hold me

I've broken free

I'm not looking back

This is my beginning

Each single step I make

I move closer to my light

That light that shines within

I'm stronger now

Than I've ever been

I throw caution to the wind

Don't get in my way

I'm bursting through the sky

I am Genesis ....
