The Words of St. Thomas August 2019

At St. Thomas we create community that respects the dignity of all.

Words from our Rector

I hate the end of the summer—always have. I was not the mother who counted the days down until school started back because I couldn’t wait for the children to be back in school. I loved our lazy, unstructured, summer days. The only thing I looked forward to was back to school shopping. I LOVE SCHOOL AND OFFICE SUPPLIES! The girls and I would spend hours in different stores co-ordinating and choosing just the right notebooks and folders. We color coded and organized. Happy, happy days, and I miss them. I have been thinking about what back to school means for some children. There are some children who haven’t had a regular meal every day during the summer and they will be thankful for the start of school and the meal programs they provide. There are some children who will struggle with go-ing back and the reminder they are “behind.” There are some who will dread going back because they are bullied and/or excluded. There will be children who don’t have the school supplies they need. I am grateful we are collecting school supplies for Zachary Taylor. The teachers and staff at ZT are always so appreciative for what we bring. Zachary Taylor is next door to us; they are our neighbors. St. Thomas’s mis-sion is to create community that respects the dignity of all. ZT is part of our community. I am making a promise to myself this year that I will pray every day for the students of Zachary Taylor. Will you join me? Just Katherine+

Have you been in Robison Hall lately? If you have you’ve seen the new curtains hanging there? We are so glad we have a curtain fairy! We don’t really. We have Bill and Margaret Bond. Margaret purchased the curtains

on a trip to IKEA and then she and Bill spent two Saturdays hanging them. Margaret always goes above and beyond and we are beyond blessed she is part of the St. Thomas community.

UN-SUNG HEROES— BILL AND MARGARET BOND

Thank you Margaret and Bill for hanging our curtains and for all you do!

PUB THEOLOGY NO meeting in August

Join us Tuesday, September 3 Are you an adult interested in

friendly and timely discussions about all aspects of our spiritual life? Do you enjoy meeting friends in a fun setting? Do you eat dinner on Tuesdays? Then Pub Theology may be the place for you!

We’re taking a break in August, but be sure to put Pub Theology on your calendar in September when we will begin planning out our agenda for the coming pro-gram year.

Bring your ideas for discussion topics and join us at Selena’s at Willow Lake Tavern, 10609 LaGrange Rd., at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, September 3.

BRIDGE CLUB NEWS

The St. Thomas Bridge Club met July 18th. Although it was sweltering outside, our three tables of bridge re-mained cool, calm, and collected inside Robison Hall.

Jim and Peggy Rucker provided the group with refresh-ments.

The ladies cruised past the men this time around when Susie Kirkland took first place with 2730 points. Char-lie Wilson got second place with 2430 points.

YOUR PHOTOS NEEDED!

St. Thomas has been invited to take part in a presentation and infor-mation night at EACM. We’d like to let people know about our parish and would appreciate any photos you have of events and services at St. Thomas, especially those taken within the last year or two.

Please send photos via email to the church office or Judy Gradl. Prints can be accepted, but may not be returned. If you have any questions, please contact Judy Gradl.

7:00 am Eucharist Resumes in September

Beginning September 3 join Katherine for Eucharist on Tuesday mornings at 7:00 am.

Come as you are, ready for wherever the rest of the day will take you.

LITURGY COMMITTEE

In August the liturgy committee will meet to reflect upon and evaluate how we at St. Thomas worship together. More information will be forthcoming after our initial gathering. In order to begin our work, we need to hear from you. Please take a moment to answer this survey. All responses are anonymous.

Here is the web address for the survey:

She is passionate about creatively enriching spiritual lives through digital storytelling, experiential learning, and collaborative art. Lisa continues to grow in personal faith through Education for Ministry (EfM) and holds a certification in Leadership in Faith Formation from Virginia The-ological Seminary. Lisa is also on the General Convention Task Force for the Formation & Ministry of the Bap-tized; and represented the Diocese of Pittsburgh as a Deputy for General Convention in 2018.

ST. THOMAS OUTREACH: NEW INITIATIVES TO BENEFIT OUR COMMUNITY

The Outreach Committee (Judy Gradl, Meranda Phillips, Donna Donovan, Molly Rauh, Lanier Siewertsen, Rip Tilden, Kathy Eigelbach, Suzy Bowling) have been working diligently lately to create a plan for ongoing out-reach ministries based at our church. By working with established groups in our area, the hope is to launch initi-atives from St. Thomas which have far-reaching effects on our community.

The Outreach Committee has identified Volunteers of America as an organization which closely aligns with our mission of creating community that respects the dignity of all. Their mission statement is “Volunteers of America Mid-States creates positive change in the lives of individuals and communities through a ministry of service.”

Some of the services they offer in the Louisville area are housing, particularly emergency housing for families; developmental disability services; addiction recovery services; HIV services; and veteran services. There are many ways we can get involved and over the next few months you will be hearing more.

Everyone at St. Thomas has been invited to learn more by attending, A Real Journey, a one hour program and tour that highlights the services provided by VOA. You can attend on your own, or join Katherine+ on Thursday, September 26, 8:30-9:30 am. Below are all the upcoming available dates for the program. There is no fee to attend, but please RSVP to Callie Elliott at (502) 636-4660 or [email protected].
