• Click on the "External Storage" icon • Click on "Modify" and specify the folder

Master Exercise: Static Analysis

1. Creation and Pre-Processing

Load the CATIA document "catgps_hanger.CATPart"

1.1 - Apply Aluminium to the part

The hanger part is opened in the Part Design Workbench.Apply Aluminium to the part while in the Part Design Workbench.

• Click on the Apply Material icon in the Apply Material toolbar.

• In the Metal tab, click on the Aluminum icon.

• Click on Part representation in specification tree The material will be applied to the part.

• Click OK

• Check that the material is correctly applied to the part.

1.3 - Open the GPS Workbench and create a Static Analysis of the Hanger.

• Select Static Analysis and click on OK.

It is time now to apply restraints on the hanger: Clamps to the smallest inner surfaces of both mounting holes

• Click on Clamp icon in Restrain toolbar.

• Select the inner surfaces of the first and second mounting holes. Click on OK.

• Click on the Distributed Force icon in the Loads toolbar.

• Select the footpeg mounting hole.

2. Computing

Load the previous CATIA Document or "catgps_hanger_step2.CATAnalysis"

2.1 - First of all you have to specify Temporary External Storage location.

• Click on Temporary External Storage icon in the Solver Tools toolbar. • Select a directory with enough space to make the computation.

• In the features tree, double-click on the Computations link and define a directory where the computation files will be saved

• Select a path and click on OK to validate.

• In the specification tree, double-click on the Results link and define a directory where the results files will be saved

• Select a path and click on OK to validate.

2.2 - At this step, you have defined the different storage locations. Now, you can compute your analysis

3. Results Visualization

Load the previous CATIA Document or “catgps_Hanger_2.CATAnalysis” Before you trust in the results, it is important to evaluate their relevance. Consequently, the first thing to do is to check the estimated local error.

3.1 - You will create a Precision image

• Click on Precision icon in the Image toolbar

• A symbol is created in the specification tree:

3.2 - Now you will ask CATIA to localize the error extrema

• Click on the ‘Image Extrema’ icon in the Analysis Tools toolbar • Request maximum of 2 absolute values and click on OK

Now that you have localized the maximal error, you need to evaluate it

• Click on the ‘Image Information’ icon • Select the ‘Estimated local error’ in the specification tree

You can see that the Global error rate is about 27%! That is really too much. You need to improve the results by refining the mesh.

3.3 - You will now create a Von Mises Stress image

• Click on the Von Mises Stress icon

3.4 - You will try to determinate what is the Max. stress in your hanger

• Click on the Image Extrema icon

• Request a maximum of 2 global maximum values.

• Select the Von Mises Stress in the tree:

You obtain:

The extrema features appear in tree.

You can read that the max. Stress is about 6.2e7Pa. The aluminum yield strength is 9.5 .107 N/m2 (see Information box above) You could conclude that the hanger would not plastically deform under these conditions However, you need more accurate results to make sure.

3.5 - Create a new sensor by right clicking on sensors.1 in the tree and select Create Resultant Sensor > Reaction Sensor.

• Select Clamp.1 from the Restraints • Click on Update Results.

• Click OK The clamp reactions appear in the tree:

• Double-click on the Reaction Sensor to have its tensor.

Note: If you have created two clamps individually, you have to make this for each one

3.6 - You can now publish a report of this first coarse analysis.

• Click on the Generate Report icon in the Analysis Results toolbar

• Specify a report directory and report title.
