• Living Streets creating an audit template involving older people

• Key stakeholders able to come together with the community to prioritise issues presenting a barrier to walking, and to identify opportunities for improvement

• Residents participate in an activity to help identify issues that affect them when out walking

• Also involving, carers, P&K Council Accident Prevention Officer, Live Active Leisure Paths for All Coordinator, P&K Vision, NHS Falls Service Manager, community council, schools and community members.

• Pilots in

– Luncarty House, Luncarty (village setting)

– Kincarathie House, Perth – (city home, located next to a busy road

• Both areas have different challenges.

Short term recommendations:

Repair path edging

Provide contrasting line at path edge

Cut back overhanging branches and brambles to clear path

Clear grass from path edges and repair damaged path edge

Long term recommendation:

Assess lighting along the path

including drop kerbs and tactile paving

Living Streets - Kincarathie House, Perth

Recent street audit which also involved Kinnouill Primary

School. Kinnouill Primary and Kincarathie have other

intergenerational activities planned including a gardening project,

a reminiscence project, games then and now and further walks.

Outcomes

• Nov 14, 15 Fitness Instructors undertaking an HND in

Fitness, Health and Exercise trained as Strength &

Balance Exercise Instructors

• Jan – April 15, 3 students allocated to 5 care homes to

provide an exercise programme every Thursday for 12

weeks.

• Students plan, prescribe, deliver and evaluate exercise

sessions (applied exercise for special population groups)

Students Feedback from Moncrieffe

Nursing Home (week 7)

• Strength and Balance Exercises - Progressedonto the harder options of the exercises. Abit more difficult but manageable by all.

• Adaptations made for chair bound residents.

• Completed a total of 10 exercise, managingto do the exercises in a more slow andcontrolled movement with more repetitions

• Also managed to hold the exercise for alonger period of time.

• Clients enjoyed session

• 14 clients present.

• When it was each clients turn theywould get up and walk to middle ofroom to take their shot.

• Everyone really enjoyed this and both teams got behind each other.

• Overall the session went really well and we are looking forward to next week.

7 participants.

Anton did warm up and chair aerobics.

Craig did strength and balance exercises all 10

for 10 repetitions. All but 1 were standing

once again.

Played boccia again to finish up residents

favourite game, alternated throws between

right hand, left hand and eyes closed.

Everything went well.”

• Carers have noted improvements each week in the residents ability
