STATE-OF-THE-ARTWATERPROOFINGSYSTEMS

Waterproofing is a process that is

designed to prevent water from

penetrating a structure. Typically,

waterproofing is done in various

layers and stages to create

multiple barriers so that water

cannot penetrate the structure.

A combination of such stages is

referred to as creating a “Building

Envelope”. However, most often

enough importance is not given

to this very crucial area while

constructing new structures.

Over-reliance on conventional and

outdated systems, low awareness

about modern waterproofing

systems and lack of trained

expertise for application are some

of the reasons for the same.

Pidilite manufactures and

markets a wide range of

construction chemical products

under two brands - Dr. Fixit &

Roff covering different aspects of

construction like waterproofing,

building repairs, tile fixing,

admixtures, sealants, flooring

and grouts. Pidilite is the

country’s leading player in the

retail market for construction

chemicals with the Dr. Fixit and

Roff brands. Under Dr. Fixit, we

offer a range of waterproofing

and repair solutions while Roff

Methodology

SURFACE PREPARATION

¬ Before applying the waterproofing membrane, clean the surface for any debris, etc. Remove all surface imperfections, protrusions, structurally unsound and loose concrete, and repair with polymer modified mortar using Dr. Fixit Pidicrete URP.

¬ Where separate concrete layers are poured at different levels, fill and smoothen the gaps to obtain a comparatively smoother surface. When cleaning the substrate, remove any pollutants - such as chemicals, curing agents, etc. - which may affect the membrane adhesion.

¬ Angle fillets with a polymer modified mortar of the measurements 1 inch x 1 inch.

APPLICATION

¬ Apply three coats of Dr. Fixit Solyseal to the inside area of the lift pit to a total thickness of 2 mm. Leave this to be air-cured.

¬ On the inside corners, over the angle fillets, place a glass fibre mesh measuring 2 mm x 2 mm as a reinforcement over the first coat of Dr. Fixit Solyseal, while it is still wet. Subsequently the next two coats can be applied after the previous coat is touch-dry.

¬ Place a protection board of 4 mm thickness to protect it from damages at the site and the installation of the lift car.

SURFACE PREPARATION

¬ For horizontal application, smoothen and level the new concrete layer. It should be left to mature for at least 72 hours.

¬ Before laying the waterproofing membrane, clean the waste off the surface.

INSTALLATION OF DR. FIXIT FLEXSHIELD

MEMBRANE FOR RAFT WATERPROOFING

Whenever Dr. Fixit Flexshield membrane is being installed, it is highly recommended to lay membrane at the position and allow it to relax for at least 45 minutes. This will help in releasing the tensions in the membrane.

¬ Always lay a geotextile of 250 gsm for protection of the waterproofing membrane, loosely laid on the

concrete substrate before you spread out the Dr. Fixit Flexshield membrane, to protect it from any protrusions.

¬ In the horizontal areas, lay the Dr. Fixit Flexshield membrane loosely, between two layers of geotextile sheets.

¬ Bond the laps of the membrane sheets using a splice adhesive and tape. The overlapping must be at least 75 - 100 mm wide. Splicing must be done after you prime the splicing area. The splice tape is two-sided and is stuck over the primed part which adheres to the Dr. Fixit Flexshield membrane under it and over it, securing the lap joint effectively.

¬ Over the Dr. Fixit Flexshield membrane comes the geotextile membrane of at least 150 gsm, and over that, lay a 50 – 75 mm protective concrete screed of M 20 grade and cure it well for at least 7 days. Its purpose is to protect the waterproofing membrane system from further damages that may occur during the installation of the reinforcing steel, in-situ casting of the raft concrete and / or vibrations, etc.

¬ The membrane should cover the PCC or blinding concrete well beyond the perimeter of the area.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE BASEMENT

RETAINING WALL

Waterproofing for the external side of the retaining wall will also be taken up with Dr. Fixit Flexshield. The application should be taken up from the bottom-up.

¬ Begin the application of the Dr. Fixit Flexshield membrane from the bottom side, unrolling each membrane upwards to its maximum. Strap them up and fasten it with screws and washers.

¬ Seam the lap joints. After each lift of the concrete wall is cast, continue with the Dr. Fixit Flexshield membrane in the manner explained in the above point. This will be continued to at least 1 metre above the ground level for complete protection.

¬ Bond the portion of the Dr. Fixit Flexshield membrane on the vertical side, which is in contact with the membrane applied on the horizontal side with an adhesive.

¬ Cast concrete over it to protect the joining of these membranes.

¬ Conduct spot bonding of a geotextile over the vertical Dr. Fixit Flexshield membrane, followed by a protection board of the specifier’s choice.

¬ After this, carry out soil backfilling.

WATERPROOFING OF THE RETAINING

WALL – EXTERNAL SIDE

¬ On the vertical side of the retaining wall, apply Dr. Fixit Extensa over the concrete, at 2 mm thickness with designated spray equipment, in one application.

¬ Dr. Fixit Extensa is a fast-setting water-based product which will tenaciously adhere to concrete. It is applied to form a seamless, high water-resistant membrane with an elongation of > 1000 %.

¬ Protect Dr. Fixit Extensa with a geotextile sheet of 200 gsm at least, or with a protection board depending on what the site needs. Generally, a protection board can be of highly compressible closed cell foam.

¬ Begin soil backfilling after this installation.

SURFACE PREPARATION

¬ Clean the surface thoroughly to get rid of all contaminants like dust, traces of curing compound, oil and grease.

¬ Remove all surface imperfections, protrusions, structurally unsound and loose concrete, and repair with polymer modified mortar using Dr. Fixit Pidicrete URP.

PRIMING

¬ Conduct priming all over the blinding concrete or PCC (properly levelled) using Dr. Fixit Torchshield Primer.

¬ Do this with a roller or brush over a dried surface. Allow the primer to dry for 8 to 10 hours.

APPLICATION ON PCC BELOW THE RAFT

SLAB

¬ Lay Dr. Fixit Torchshield SP 4160, an SBS based polyester reinforced membrane by providing an overlap of at least 100 mm.

¬ Lay a second layer of the Dr. Fixit Torchshield SP 4160 membrane with an overlap of 50% above the first layer.

¬ Extend the membrane to the maximum extent of the full area of the blinding concrete.

¬ Now, lay the geotextile membrane of 120 gsm as a protection layer over the Torchshield membrane.

¬ Overlay a screed of 50 mm of M 20 concrete grade, which will facilitate the reinforcement cage to be assembled, so the RCC raft can be cast over it.

¬ Provide Dr. Fixit Waterbar - a swellable, adhesive strip waterbar of 20 mm x 20 mm - in the construction joints, which is placed on the inside of the reinforcement in both the raft concrete floor and the side retaining concrete walls..

APPLICATION ON VERTICAL SURFACES

¬ Over the RCC raft, the side retaining walls are cast in concrete. Prepare the retaining wall surface to receive waterproofing system as detailed in the surface preparation above.

¬ After the application of the primer and drying it, lay two layers of Dr. Fixit Torchshield SP 4160.

¬ Place a bituminous protection board of 4 mm thickness or a HDPE dimpled drain board of 12 mm thickness vertically over the Torchshield membrane, allowing the soil backfill.

¬ As the activity goes upward, carry out the application of Dr. Fixit Torchshield SP 4160 membrane, along with the protection system, a minimum of 300 mm above the ground level or as per the finished floor level. Use a C-shaped aluminium flashing strip or tuck it into the concrete wall of a groove of 12 mm x 12 mm. In case of the groove, the aluminium flashing can be fitted to press the membrane into the groove and then be filled with a single component Dr. Fixit PU Sealant.

FLAT ROOF WITH SCREED

SURFACE PREPARATION

¬ Provide slope in new construction while casting the roof slab (1 in 100 or 1 in 80).

¬ A thorough surface preparation is a must over the entire roof area,

¬ Provide angle fillets in cement-sand-mortar admixed with Dr. Fixit Pidicrete URP, measuring 50 mm x 50 mm all along the junction of the parapet wall and the roof slab.

¬ Wrap any pipe inserts or protrusions in the slab with Dr. Fixit Bathseal Tape.

¬ Grout around the pipe before initiating the task of waterproofing.

PRIMING

¬ Apply Dr. Fixit Roofseal, diluted with water in 1:1 proportion as the primer to a clean, smooth and dry surface using a brush or roller in saturated surface dry condition.

¬ Allow the primer to dry before applying Dr. Fixit Roofseal. Extend the primer over the angle fillets, up to the drip mould on the parapet wall.

APPLICATION

¬ Apply the first coat of Dr. Fixit Roofseal.

¬ Over the wet coat, place and press down an open woven mesh of glass fibre and allow it to soak completely.

¬ Immediately, apply the second coat of Dr. Fixit Roofseal to embed the mesh in the coating. Allow it to dry completely.

¬ After 48 - 72 hours, place a loosely laid geotextile fabric of at least 100 gsm with 30 cm overlaps.

¬ Over the geotextile fabric, lay 50 mm thick levelled screed of M 20 grade.

¬ Screed can be cast in alternate bays’ method. Cut wooden battens of 12 mm thickness to size, according to the slope and fix them on the roof surface with the help of sand-cement-mortar.

¬ Each bay size should not be more than 10 sq. m. (3.25 m. x 3.25 m.) and the areas of the bay near the parapet wall should not be more than 2.25 sq.m.

¬ Finish the laying of the screed and let it get completely dried and cured.

¬ After this, remove the wooden battens and fill with a compressible board, for e.g. bitumen impregnated board or extruded polystyrene foam sheets.

¬ Finally, fill the top of the joints with Dr. Fixit PU Sealant.

¬ Fix the wooden battens by drilling

and use steel screws for fixing so as to avoid rusting. After drilling holes and before fixing the screws, fix Dr. Fixit Bathseal Tape on the bottom as well as top sides of the batten. This will ensure a perfect seal around the screwed area. The battens must have enough number of grooves depending upon the length of the roof to allow for efficient drainage of water in case there is breakage of tiles.

¬ Apply the third coat of Dr. Fixit Newcoat all over the area covering the wooden batten.

¬ Carefully fix tiles on the batten. Take care not to rupture the coating while fixing tiles.

¬ Never fix the batten by hammering nails in the concrete. It will damage the roof. Always use a drill machine to fix screws.

SURFACE PREPARATION

A thorough surface preparation is a must over the entire roof area.

PRIMING

Prime the surface with Dr. Fixit Torchshield Primer. Allow it to dry for 8 to 10 hours.

APPLICATION

¬ Screed the mother slab with M 20 grade concrete, to a slope of 1 in 100, with at least 50 mm thickness at the outlet.

¬ Wrap all the pipe fittings and drainage fittings with Dr. Fixit Bathseal Tape.

¬ Carry out the priming using Dr. Fixit Torchshield Primer.

¬ Torch over using the APP based membrane - Dr. Fixit Torchshield AM 4160 - with a mineral or slate finish of 4 mm thickness. Ensure overlaps of 100 mm with factory-controlled / demarcated overlaps in the membrane.

¬ While torching in the overlaps, press evenly to bleed out the bitumen out of the overlap. A ‘bead’ formed thereof, must not be flattened with the steel trowel.

¬ The membrane must go over the angle fillet at the parapet walls

¬ Conduct flashing on the parapet wall with a C-shaped aluminium strip nailed (with SS Screws) to the vertical substrate at the termination of the membrane. It can be tucked into a groove measuring 12 mm x 12 mm into the parapet wall, 15 - 20 mm above the angle fillet. Thereafter, apply a single component Dr. Fixit PU sealant or a ‘neutral-cure’ silicone sealant to fill the gap and seal it.

¬ Provide Dr. Fixit roofing accessories such as roof drains, flashing strips, etc. as per standard roofing practices.

Roofing accessories are extremely important while installing waterproofing membranes as they ensure standardisation in the fixtures and a long-lasting installation.

DR. Fixit ROOFix FLAShiNG

¬ A flashing is a metallic strip generally in a non-corroding type of metal into which waterproofing membranes are tucked in. This eliminates the need to insert the membrane after cutting a groove into the parapet or side wall —which also makes it look shabby — and is often left to the skill of the applicator.

¬ Dr. Fixit Roofix Flashing is an extruded, 4-bend premium grade powder-coated termination flashing for a wide range of waterproofing systems. Once installed, it will protect the waterproofing system from any water penetration from vertical upstands, roof protrusions, duct entries, etc. Dr. Fixit Roofix Flashing’s revolutionary design also helps to prevent any mouth opening at the vertical termination area. Dr. Fixit Roofix Flashing can be fixed using standard one-inch SS screws and Rawl plugs

directly onto the substrate just above the termination level of the waterproofing system.

DR. Fixit ROOFix DRAiN

¬ Dr. Fixit Roofix Drain is an important accessory that is unique and comes along with a leaf grating. This roof drain is designed to effectively collect water in the lowest end of the roof at the parapet junctions or in the middle of the roof, to which the slope is cast so the water runs off into it.

¬ There are two types of Dr. Fixit Roofix Drains:

a. `End drain’ for fixing at parapet wall junctions

b. `Circular drain’ which is fixed in the middle portions of the roof.

ROOFS

¬ Clean the substrate with a broom brush or compressed air.

¬ Construct a masonry upstand to a minimum height of 250 mm.

¬ Form triangle fillets measuring 50 x 50 mm on all vertical upstands. The fillet should be prepared in concrete admixed with 10 - 15% of Dr. Fixit Pidicrete URP, by weight of cement.

¬ Apply the selected Dr. Fixit Waterproofing System for upstand area, depending upon the type of roof, and other parameters. The treatment should always be taken up over these angle fillets.

¬ Terminate all vertical upstands as per standard termination details.

¬ Seal the expansion joint with filler board, with a backer rod of closed cell polyethylene foam or of extruded polystyrene, inserted.

¬ Fill the joint with selected sealant.

¬ Place the expansion joint cover over the joint as shown in the illustration, in a way that water will drain off on to the roof.

¬ Seal horizontal joints with a seal tape.

APPLICATION ON PCC BELOW THE RAFT

SLAB

¬ Spray-apply Dr. Fixit Extensa to achieve a minimum thickness of 2 mm. Apply Dr. Fixit Extensa using only designated equipment. It cannot be sprayed through any other type of commonly available sprayers.

¬ Extend the Dr. Fixit Extensa coating up to the top and cover the overflow concrete channels all around the periphery of the pool.

¬ Over this, place a 3.5 mm fleece backed self-adhesive membrane - Dr. Fixit Samshield PS 3500. Being self-adhesive, it will stick to Dr. Fixit Extensa and will serve as protection for the subsequent short-creting that needs to be done (in case of a swimming pool). Carry out the short-creting over a steel reinforcement installed in accordance to the engineer’s advice, and to the required thickness. Use a wooden float to give it a smooth finish.

¬ After a thorough curing of at least 3 - 4 days, take up Dr. Fixit Fastflex for application over the short-creted surface. Just before this, apply angle fillets in polymer modified mortar admixed with Dr. Fixit Pidicrete URP all round the periphery of the swimming pool floor, at the parapet wall junctions.

¬ Initiate the application of Dr. Fixit Fastflex over a saturated surface dry short-crete. A total of three coats should be applied in all, ensuring that each coat of application dries before taking up the next.

¬ Treat the areas in the pool around the insert pipes and the wall-to-floor junctions by embedding a glass fibre mesh of 2.5 mm x 2.5 mm weighing 50 gsm between the first and second coats. Place them when the first coat is still wet. This will increase the waterproofing protection in these areas.

¬ While the third coat of Dr. Fixit Fastflex is wet, broadcast with clean and washed sand liberally and set along with the application. This will provide a key for the subsequent Roff adhesives that will be needed to fix the swimming pool tiles.

¬ After completing the tiling work, apply Roff RTM epoxy grout to fill the gaps in the tiles. Protect the entire application against chlorine in the water that is generally used to clean the pools.

¬ For waterproofing of landscapes, it is extremely important to place Dr. Fixit Samshield PS 3500 over Dr. Fixit Extensa.

¬ Provision of slope in landscaping whether on roofs or podiums becomes mandatory.

¬ Place drain cell boards from standard companies over this. The specification of the drain board generally depends upon the amount of water discharge and the kind of landscaping as

Water Bodies

SURFACE PREPARATION

¬ Clean with compressed air or pressure-wash all surfaces. Allow them to dry so they are free of loose materials, oils, form release agents and other contaminants.

¬ Make angle fillets all around the periphery of the wall with polymer modified mortar prepared with Dr. Fixit Pidicrete URP.

¬ The gaps around the pipe inserts and the floor traps, etc. should not be wider than 50 mm.

APPLICATION

¬ Seal sanitary pipes entering through the walls and floor with Dr. Fixit Bathseal Tape and grout the gaps with Dr. Fixit Bathseal Grout — a non-shrink cementitious grout.

¬ Securely fit the ‘Nahani’ trap, etc. in the same manner. Grout the gaps around it, too.

¬ Now, apply the first coat of Dr. Fixit Bathseal WPC in the sunken area and extend up to 150 mm on walls and above the finished floor level (FFL).

¬ Extend the coating in shower flash zone — 1500 mm wide x 1800 mm high.

¬ While this first coat of Dr. Fixit Bathseal WPC is still wet, cover all angle fillets with a 150 mm wide strip

of open woven glass fibre mesh of 2 mm x 2 mm. Do this immediately over the coating and allow it to soak completely.

¬ Cover it with one additional coat of Dr. Fixit Bathseal WPC over the angle fillets and allow it to dry completely.

¬ Apply the second coat of Dr. Fixit Bathseal WPC after the first coat dries completely. Also, cover the angle fillets during the second coat application.

¬ After 24 to 72 hours, lay a concrete screed of 50 mm thickness on the sunken portion. Sanitary pipes and traps can be laid over this screed, the next day. Brickbat Coba using

Dr. Fixit Pidiproof LW+ can be laid after 24 hours to fix these pipes in position.

¬ Begin the tiling work after finalising the plumbing work in the bathroom floor and wall. Use the Roff tiling adhesives and RTM tile grouts.

¬ After finishing these tasks, start fitting the sanitary ware. Fill the gaps around with Dr. Fixit Bathseal Sealant to complete the bathroom waterproofing.

Alternatively, Dr. Fixit Bathseal Plus can be applied as a high-performance, premium bathroom waterproofing system in place of Dr. Fixit Bathseal WPC.

SURFACE PREPARATION

¬ For horizontal application, smoothen and level the new concrete layer. Leave it to mature for at least 72 hours.

¬ Before laying the waterproofing membrane, clean the waste off the surface. Remove all surface imperfections, protrusions, structurally unsound and loose concrete and repair with polymer modified mortar using Dr. Fixit Pidicrete URP.

¬ Where the separate concrete layers are poured at different levels, fill the gaps and smoothen to obtain a comparatively smooth surface.

¬ When cleaning the substrate, remove any pollutants — such as chemicals, curing agents etc. which may affect the membrane adhesion.

INSTALLATION OF DR. FIXIT SAMSHIELD

MEMBRANE FOR WATERPROOFING

FLOOR OF THE RESERVOIR

¬ Level out the PCC / blinding concrete to see whether the surface is cleaned of any debris and protrusions. It must be completely dry to begin the waterproofing process using Dr. Fixit Samshield XL.

¬ Prime the area with Dr. Fixit Torchshield Primer which is solvent-based. Leave it to dry for 8 to 10 hours, or overnight.

¬ Apply the Dr. Fixit Samshield XL membrane along the length and breadth of the PCC area. Peel off the silicone release paper and stick it over the primed surface. Use a roller to press it firmly and ensure there are no wrinkles. Keep pressing and straightening the membrane till it is firmly adhered to the surface.

¬ Lay down rolls of Dr. Fixit Samshield XL with side laps of 50 – 60 mm on its ‘selvedge’. The end-laps that come every 10 metres length-wise should measure 100 mm.

¬ Carry out the application for the entire area in this manner. Application should be done when the weather is favourable and should not be kept exposed for a long time.

¬ Overlay a geotextile immediately, followed by casting a levelled concrete screed of 50 mm of M 20 grade.

¬ After properly curing the screed, take up the task of casting the concrete raft.

WATERPROOFING OF THE EXTERIOR SIDE

OF THE RETAINING WALL

¬ Apply Dr. Fixit Samshield XL on the external side using the same procedure as given above.

¬ After applying Dr. Fixit Samshield XL on each level of the reservoir’s exterior, place a protection board of highly compressible board, to allow the backfilling of soil.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE BASEMENT

RETAINING WALL OF THE RESERVOIR

¬ Take up waterproofing for the internal side of the retaining wall using Dr. Fixit Fastflex.

¬ After thorough surface preparation, on a pre-wetted concrete surface with water, carry out the application of Dr. Fixit Fastflex in 3 coats.

Note: Dr. Fixit Fastflex is a cementitious acrylic membrane that only needs mixing with a forced action mixer attached to a suitable mixing paddle, until the two parts of the product become homogeneous and a lump-free

mixture is obtained. The product is brush-applied to achieve 1 mm in 2 coats of application. Dr. Fixit Fastflex forms a highly elastomeric membrane when cured and sustains the water movement in large water containing structures. It has an elongation of 150%.

¬ After the first coat of application, place a glass fibre mesh of 2.5 mm x 2.5 mm over the membrane, while the coating is still wet.

¬ After the first coat dries in about 8 hours or so, apply the second coat over it, covering up the mesh on the first coat.

¬ After 8 hours again, when the second coat is wet, apply the third coat of Dr. Fixit Fastflex. This is basically meant for broadcasting cleaned and washed sand liberally over it.

¬ This will facilitate easy plastering of 20 mm over the Dr. Fixit Fastflex membrane. This finishes the internal surface of the water reservoir.

¬ After the plaster apply Dr. Fixit Safeguard for anti-microbial/anti-fungal/anti-algae properties and prevent the growth of harmful elements in internal area of potable water tanks.
