FontsWe strongly recommend to use Post-Script Type 1 or Open font fonts. Please include all the fonts used in the open files in PDF to avoid any problems during processing the PDF trough the RIP. The fonts used in EPS grafics must also be included. We strongly recomend not to use True Type fonts. The usage of customized font should be clearly indicated when supplying the documents (open documents, pdf, dcs, tiff...).

Line Art - bitmap imagesLine Art should be scanned at 1200 dpi resolution. A higher resolution doesn’t give better results in printing.Minimum resolution which still gives acceptible quality is 550 dpi. Save the file as bitmap TIFF.

Halftone imagesHalfton pictures should be scanned at 300 dpi for a 150-200 lpi range of screen. Minimum resolution which still gives acceptable quality is 200 dpi.Always remember to convert the file from RGB to CMYK. Do not use DCS (multifile). Save the file as TIFF. We can work with transparency and PDF ver.1.6.

ICC profilesPlease use following ICC-profiles: • Coated paper: gloss and matt coated paper – PSO coated v.3_eci• Uncoated white offset paper – PSO Uncoated ISO12647 (ECI) - Fogra 52.• Uncoated yellowish offset paper – ISO Uncoated Yellowish Base for the ICC profiles is FOGRA51 (CMYK colors of the FOGRA51 dataset are much easier to print). In case you are not sure which ICC profile for offset printing to use, it is recommended to use PSO Coated v3 300 % (ECI). The advantage of the version of the coated profile with a maximum total ink coverage of 300% is it‘s higher flexibility regarding the use for sheet-fed and web offset print-ing. Prepress data prepared with this

profile can be converted to many other printing conditions with good results, however, the best possible results will be achieved with CMYK prepress data prepared with the profile that matches that printing condition exactly. You can find more info about ICC profiles on http://www.eci.org

Pages• Do not set up pages as spreads, only one page per printed page.• If you import in a box only a part of an image it is better to set a crop path in Adobe Photoshop (or in any other similar application), save the image as EPS (or as TIFF if you use QuarkXPress 4 or later) rather than set the crop path in QuarkXPress/InDesing.

Colours• Define the colours within your application as CMYK. If spot colours are used, define them as Pantone spot colours and not as CMYK process colours.• If you use gold or silver Pantone, be sure to set the traping right. Usually the Pantone spot color is printed after the CMYK. But in this case usually the gold or silver Pantone is printed before black - black color is printed last. And it is better if the black elements are set as knockout.• Black text, lines and small elements must be overprint over the other light tones.• If you want to have big black tone, we sugest that you use rich black: 30 % C, 100% K• Do not make separations, make CMYK composite PDF.

Language changes (versioning)Please deliver the color base PDF files with common graphic for all language and language changes in separate PDF for each language/edition with the black texts and specific graphic for individual language (Text Black). It is necessary that all changes have the same parameters in size, location of pages, position of texts and figures. IT

Bleed and crop (cutting) marks• Bleed must be 3 mm – that means elements must be 3mm over the trim and the crop marks must be 3mm from the trim (offset 3 mm). Please don’t include color bars in the file.

Saddle-stiched books: Bleed must be 5mm because of the pages which are in the middle of the book. This pages are pushed out from the spine of the book becuase of the paper tickness in the spine. And they are actualy smaller then pages which are positioned on the outside of the book block. So we have two issues here: pages in the middle of the book are smaller then final size of the book and elements can be cuted away if they are too close to the trim. If the elements on middle pages are to close to the trim, we are forced not to cut the book on correct book size but we have to cut less. In this case the crop marks, register marks can stay in finnished book because they were not far enough from the timed size in the PDF. Creep: Sometimes called “push out”, it is the distance margins shift when paper is folded and/or inserted during finishing. The amount of creep will vary depending on both the number and thickness of the sheets and must be compensated for during layout and imposition.

Wire-O or Spiral binding: bleed 3 mm all around because this is treated as single sheet binding. In the spine there shouldn’t be a bleed from opposite (facing) page. See the picture.• All the elements and text must be 5 mm from the trim - All the elements, text,…. which shouldn’t be cut away, must be positioned at least 3 mm from the edge of the page. This is expecially true for saddle stiched books.• Crop marks shoulde be always in the PDF file. With them the size and position is known. Othervisewecan’t check the size of the pages and position them correctly.

• Crop marks, register marks, color bars,… must be positioned at least 3 mm (5 mm for saddle-stiched books)away from the edge of the page. That is because of the binding of the larger sized binding schemes.IMPORTANT: We prefer that PDF doesn’t contain the colour bar and register marks, only the crop marks and info about the page.

Other suggestions when preparing the files• Send PDF/X- PDF files.• Double check the copyright page.• Keep file names and folder names short. Avoid the use of symbols and any special characters in the file or folder names: stick to the letters of the alphabet and the numbers 0 to 9. Use the underscore characters and or dashes _ “_” separator rather than slashes and dashes. Never use periods in folder names. Never place spaces at the start or end of folder names.• Hinge on the hardcover: Hinge on the hard cover is about 8mm wide or bigger. Please have this in mind when designing the cover. Important ele-ments shouldn’t be in the hinge (exp.: bar code, text,...).• Slip case: Please ask for measurements to get a good fit.

Wire-O or spiral bindingThe size of the Wire-o or spiral holes is usualy 4 mm. Because of that all the elements must be moved for at least 15 mm from the spine. That goes for the cover and also for the inside pages.Otherwise the Wire-o or spiral will make holes in the text, logos, pictures,….Please check what kind of measure-ments are needed for the specific Wire-O or spiral you require. The mea-surements of Wire-O or spiral can vary.Bleed 3 mm all around because this is treated as single page binding. In the spine there shouldn’t be a bleed from opposite (facing) page but only bleed from the same page. See the picture on p. 14.

Please remember to submit the last version of the hardcopy, with crop marks, together with the files. Thisensures that we have an appropriate reference copy of your document, and will avoid misunderstandings. In the absence of a hardcopy we will be unable to inspect our work, and you will then bear the full responsibility for the final result.

Please note that we do not proof read your files. That is your responsibility and we can not be held liable for any grammatical or type errors in document we review. We do prepress preview and preflight services only.

If the files are not prepared according to this instructions, we can’t take any responsibility for the quality of the finished product. Please take extra care of very common problems:- missing bleed,- RGB,- crop marks (cuting marks) and color bars less then 3 mm from the final size of the book,..

With approval of the ploter proof, approval on Insite / Riteapprove portal or approval of low resolution PDF, you also approve and confirme all the technical elements and that ploter proof / low resolution PDF are technical reference for further production.
