Safety first! National and international committees established concepts for safe and environmentally friendly SF6-gas handling. The primary objects of these directives are:

• SF6-emissions should be avoided wherever possible. • Complete recovery of SF6-gas down to min. 20mbar by using up-to-date maintenance

devices. • Maintenance is carried out by qualified personnel only. • Monitoring: Operators and manufacturers give a report on their SF6 consumption rate. • The personnel working with SF6-gas is trained regularly. As from 4th July 2009 only

certified personnel is allowed to recover SF6-gas in the EU states in accordance with the EC 305/2008 directive.

• Manufacturers are obliged to take back equipment containing SF6-gas.

Directive on fluor gases

By using DILO SF6 maintenance devices you meet the directives of national and international guidelines. (Recovery of SF6-gas down to ≤ 20mbar (2kpa) in accordance with IEC 62271-303 table 13, paragraph 4)

SF6 is a major greenhouse gas with a global warming potential of more than 22,000 times higher than that of CO2. Therefore, it is important to measure, monitor and capture SF6, contributing significantly to environmental protection. - carbon dioxide (CO2) - methane (CH4) - carbon monoxide (N2O) also known as laughing gas - partially halogenated fluorohydrocarbons H-FKW/HFCs - perfluorinated hyrdocarbons FKW/PFCs - sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) 170 members of states ratified the Kyoto protocol and committed to reduce emissions by 5.2% as from 2008 – 2012 (compared with values of 1990).

Use of SF6 in medium and high voltage switchgear for more than 40 years.

Since 2002, DILO measuring devices have been equipped with self-closing couplings. The measuring gas can be collected by means of the analyser discharge recovery system.

SF6 maintenance devices, being equipped with compressorsand operating entirely without oil and suction pumps forreclaiming SF6 down to 1 mbar, are manufactured in accordance with the state-of-art technology.

DILO measuring devices have been designed for verification of the SF6-gas quality for direct reuse of SF6 in case the gas quality corresponds to the IEC60480 directive. New measuring devices are equipped with an integrated gas return system.

DILO couplings are self-closing so that there is no loss of SF6-gas when connecting and reconnecting hoses on both ends.

Advantages of DILO SF6 service carts

All components used in SF6 circulation such as

Reuse of SF6-gas SF6-gas must be handled in a closed cycle to avoid SF6 emissions. The diagram illustrated below explains a closed “reuse concept“ by using DILO components. DILO measuring devices are designed to check the limit values for the reuse of SF6-gas according to the IEC 60480 directive for “reuse gas“. “State of the art“ SF6-gas handling

1. Measuring the gas quality with a multi-function device (3 in 1) • Decomposition products • SF6 volume percentage • Dew point temperature

The measuring gas is collected in an internal storage tank and is pumped back in the gas compartment after measurement. The measuring values can be stored in the device.

2. Recovery of contaminated gas, preparation and storage in liquid or gaseous form.

3. Registration of the recovered SF6-gas quantity (monitoring).

4. Measurement of the prepared gas (see item 1.). Collecting the measuring gas and pumping it back in the storage tank.

5. If the purified SF6-gas does not exceed the limit values of the IEC 60480 directive it is allowed to be reused.

Basic functions of measuring devices Determination of SF6-gas condition Regular control of the gas quality is recommended in order to maintain the operational reliability of SF6-switchgear. Thus, gas contamination could be detected and eliminated in time before any failure of switchgear arises. The measured gas quality is an indicator for the following parameters:

• decomposition products (on SO2 (sulphur dioxide) basis • SF6-concentration in gas quantity (percentage) • dew point temperature

The purifying and reusing method is determined based on the measuring results. If the gas quality corresponds to the IEC 60480 regulation for reused SF6-gas it can be used without any additional treatment. (Follow the operating instructions of the switchgear manufacture.)

Basic functions of service carts Function: Recovery of SF6 During the recovery of SF6-gas from circuit breakers the gas flows automatically through dry and particle filters where decomposition products, moisture and solid particles are retained effectively. For heavily contaminated gas ( 100 ppm SO2), as well as for gas the quality of which is undefined it is absolutely necessary to install an additional pre-filter upstream from the gas handling device in order to protect the device from decomposition products. The time interval for exchanging the filter cartridges cannot be standardized as it depends on several factors. For this reason it is recommended to measure the gas quality.

Recovery of SF6-gas:

• storage in gaseous or liquid form • with oilfree suction pump down to 1 mbar (no SF6-gas emission) corresponds to the IEC 62271-303 directive (recovery of min. 2 kpa (20 mbar)) • with oilfree vacuum compressor down to pa 50 mbar - residual gas emission 0.3 kg/m3

Function: Evacuation of air or nitrogen Prior to filling with SF6-gas the gas compartments must be evacuated to avoid mixing with air. For this, (oil-lubricated) vacuum pumps are used which only deliver into the atmosphere. They are only used for the evacuation of air. The evacuation of gas compartments before refilling with SF6-gas is only possible down to 1 mbar. Vacuum pumps with a higher final vacuum are available.

Function: Filling of SF6 (to operating pressure) The purified SF6-gas can be filled back with overpressure or by means of the compressor in the gas compartment to the required operating pressure of the SF6-switchgear. The gas quality must correspond to the IEC 60480 directive for used SF6-gas (observe the instructions in the operating manual of the switchgear manufacturer). When filling back, the SF6-gas is led through the dry filter and particle filter once again. SF6-gas stored in liquid form is converted into gaseous form via the evaporator.

Purification of SF6-gas for reuse Each gas handling device is equipped with dry and particle filters. The dry filter allows safe absorption of gaseous decomposition products and moisture. The filter cartridge is filled with AI2O3 and molecular sieve and can easily be exchanged. The existing tubing does not have to be opened.

The particle filter serves for filtering solid particles and decomposition products out of the SF6-gas. The filter cartridge is folded to a cylinder with star-shaped cross section. A retention rate of 100 % is obtained as from a particle size of ≥ 1.0 µm.

Checklist for the selection of a service cart DILO has a wide range of SF6-service carts. Therefore, we are able to offer a suitable SF6-service cart for every special application. In order to assist us in selecting the most appropriate equipment we kindly ask you to answer the following questions: Answers

• How much SF6-gas is there in the biggest gas compartment? kg(s)

• What is the filling pressure (absolute) in the biggest gas compartment?

• What is the volume of the biggest gas compartment? litre(s)

• How many kgs of SF6-gas must be stored? kg(s)

• Do you intend to store the SF6-gas in gaseous or liquid form? Do you want to store the gas in tanks or in separate SF6-gas cylinders? Caution: When storing SF6 in gaseous form in a 40l (volume) SF6-cylinder, you can store a maximum of approx. 6 kg of SF6-gas!

• Which connecting coupling do you have at your gas compartment? Please send us a drawing of the connecting coupling or of the gas connection on the circuit breaker.
