GENERAL INFORMATION

About Frontiers in Bioscience, Journal

Publishing data in scientific journals is the accepted means for dissemination of information in science. Publications are important to investigators since they reflect the extent of their scholarly activities, are needed for their promotion and are required for obtaining grants. They are also the sole accepted method for dissemination of information important to other investigators and the public. Therefore, "Frontiers in Bioscience" considers all publications as important communications. Attempts will be made to post the manuscript on-line in a minimum time possible after it has been accepted for publication. Scientists who read a given manuscript can express their opinion, criticism and suggestion for the improvement of material published in FBS. These comments will be posted in the "Letter to editor" section of the journal. Authors can respond and if necessary can revise a manuscript that has already been accepted for publication.

TYPES OF COMMUNICATIONS

Manuscripts describing recent and important advances in the fields of biology or medicine will be considered for publication in the Frontiers in Bioscience. Manuscripts will be published in one of the following platforms.

TYPES OF COMMUNICATIONS

• Comprehensive reviews in molecular medicine • Reviews in basic and clinical sciences • Research articles in basic and clinical sciences • Technical notes and protocols • Multimedia medicine on line (Videos, sounds and images, VRML) • Databases • Proceedings of National and International Conferences• Lectures

Ask your librarian to subscribe to Frontiers in Bioscience

We are in the process of assembling the largest Encyclopedia of Bioscience [ http://www.bioscience.org/special-issues-and-managing-editors ] and Medicine. This collection will ultimately contain manuscripts written by the most authoritative scientists in different fields of biology and medicine. All manuscripts are of high impact. Already, Frontiers in Bioscience is a major resource forscientific information and is one of the most eminent resource on the Web for obtaining the latest information in scientific advancement. Of course, this would not have be feasible without an orchestrated effort of so many dedicated scientists who manage a part of the process. The unique feature of the encyclopedia isthat its contents will be kept up-to-date by our managing editor team and their elite group of contributing authors.

Over 750 managing editors [ http://www.bioscience.org/special-issues-and-managing-editors ] are contributing towards the creation of this platform, creatingunique special issues dealing with specific subjects. The uniquefeature of the articles appearing in these issues is that each manuscript will be periodically revised by the authors. This will insure that the content of Encyclopedia will remain up-to-date at all times. Each special issue includes 5-30 manuscripts authored by individuals recognized for their seminal work in special fields of biology and medicine. The encyclopedia currently holds over 3000published manuscripts, however, it will ultimately include 8000 manuscripts. This unique resource will remain as a renewable scientific platform for all scientists. The topics of special issues of the Encyclopedia are, by and large, those funded by NIH, NSF and other funding agencies. Thus, in essence, manuscripts published in the special issues of the "Encyclopedia of Bioscience" are mostly reflective of lifetime achievements of scientists in their own specialized fields in medicine or bioscience.

Ask your librarian to subscribe to Frontiers in Bioscience

1. Fill out the managing editor's form and provide a tentative title and start dateof your issue. Please place the managing editor's form, tentative title and launch datein the body of an E-mail and send it to the editorial office [ [email protected] ]. If necessary, you can change these at a later date.

2. To start the process, please prepare and distribute invitation packages for the contributing authors. It is essential that you invite only authors who are well known in the field. The invitation package includes an invitation letter (template letter for invitation of authors) and a submission form.

3. Once you have the names of about 5-30 authors, you can then give the authors a deadline of about 6-12 months after you have received their acceptance letter to submit their manuscripts. You will note, however, that not everyone, because of their heavy schedule, will be able to meet the deadline. However, this will work to your advantage since you will not suddenly receive a large number of manuscripts that need to be peer reviewed. The number of manuscripts to be included in your issue is entirely at your discretion. You can always add manuscripts to your issue at any time.

4. Please note that only high impact articles from scientists well known in their field can be considered suitable for publication. The corresponding author should be at least associate professor, be a recipient of an NIH or similar awards, should have published at least 50 articles in the field, preferably in high impact journals such as Science, Nature, Cell, etc and should cite such articles in the review.

5. Publication of primary research articles in the special issues requires prior approval of the editorial office of Frontiers in Bioscience for impact determination. We also highly encourage that you send reviews that you feel that they might not have a high impact for determination of impact prior to submission to the peer review process. This is a rapid process that normally takes less than one day and therefore does not add to the duration of peer review.

6. Please advise the authors to review the "Guidelines to Authors" and for each manuscript that they submit to adhere to the formatting instruction of FBS. Author package is available at: [ http://www.bioscience.org/authors ]. There is no limitation on the number of pages, color figures, black and white figures, number of tables or references. To avoid confusion, please advise the authors to submit their manuscripts to you and not to the editorial office of FBS. Please also advise the authors to note that only basic publication of reviews is sponsored by FBS and authors of primary research articles bear the cost of publication. The publication forms are available upon request.

7. Once you receive a manuscript, please arrange the peer review. Each manuscript should be reviewed by at least two reviewers. You can act as one of the reviewers. A second reviewer may be one the authors of your special issue. If possible, please also review the manuscripts to make sure that they are free from grammar and spelling errors and that their formats adhere to the ones recently used by the Frontiers in Bioscience. In case that this is not feasible for you, you can assign the entire review process to this office and notify the authors to submit their manuscripts to the editorial office and provide your name as the managing editor of the special issue.

8. Send the manuscripts that require revision back to the authors.

9. Please consider only the highest quality manuscripts for review. We have started a tradition of excellence at the Frontiers in Bioscience and would like to maintain this high quality. The impact factor of the journal is entirely dependent on the managing editors and the authors of their special issues.

10. Send manuscripts, (not figures) and reviewer comments as E-mail attachment to the editorial office [ [email protected] ]. In a separate E-mail, please include your name, indicate that you are the managing editor and indicate that the manuscript has been reviewed and accepted by you. Please note that a formal acceptance will be sent to the authors after the manuscript is sent to the editorial office of Frontiers in Bioscience.

11. Once a manuscript is received, you will receive an acknowledgment letter. In case that you do not receive such a letter, you can infer that the manuscript has not been received. Al publication processes will be done at the Frontiers in Bioscience.

12. Authors, normally receive a first galley for correction and revision within 24-48 hours after the manuscript has been received from you and once corrected by the author, the final manuscript will be published in your issue. On the first day of the month of indexing (Jan 1 and June 1), each manuscript will be entered into databases of indexing services and will be assigned a PubMed and a DOI number. Manuscripts generally go online two months ahead of the indexing date. For example, if the citation date appears as [Frontiers in Bioscience 12, xxxx-xxx, January 1xxxx] on the first page of published manuscript, the date of publication will be Oct 1, xxx and the date of entry of the manuscript into the databases of indexing services will be on January 1, xxxx.

13. When a final galley is received from corresponding author, the manuscript will be published and will be placed in your issue. For manuscripts that are sponsored by FBS, publication is arranged depending on the availability of funds and normally the lead time varies between 6-12 months. Thus, the lead time for publication is at minimum 6 months.

What are the steps required for publication?

Please have the manuscripts reviewed by two reviewers. If the reviewers request changes, please allow the authors to make the necessary revisions before submitting them to editorial office of FBS. You can act as one of the reviewers. Upon acceptance, please send the manuscript along with the reviewer comments [email protected]. Please send two emails: one without the manuscript and one with the attached manuscript. In the first letter, please advise us that you are sending the manuscript so that if the email with the attachment is not delivered, you can be notified. If you are submitting more than one manuscript, please send each manuscript with a separate email to avoid confusion. Before notifying the authors that their manuscripts have been accepted, please allow FBS to generate and send the official acceptance letter to the authors. The authors will receive the acceptance letter, and other information required for publication within one day. You will also receive a letter that the author has been advised of how to proceed. If you do not receive such a letter, please send us an email.

Are there reviewer forms? All the forms for managing editors, authors and reviewers can be found online.

When you login to your platform, you will be able to invite authors, arrange the peer review and submit your final decision. Reviewers can use the system to login and provide you with their comments.

What are the limitations for the manuscripts? There is no limitation on page length, number of figures/tables/references.

However, manuscripts normally do not exceed 15 pages (each page contains about 800 words). Inclusion of figures or tables is not necessary, but is encouraged. Each manuscript generally contains 1-10 figures and 1-5 tables. However, the title of each article should be less than 75 characters, the abstract less than 175 words, and running title less than 55 characters.

Can the preface be included in an issue? FBS does not offer a preface that can not be considered as a full publication with

abstract, introduction, text and references.

Can the authors use color figures?Use of color figures is encouraged. However, permission for use of any previously

published figure/text/table should be obtained by the authors from the publisher(s) of the original artwork before inclusion in the manuscript. The authors can easily obtain such permissions by writing a note to the publisher(s).

May I send a manuscript for inclusion in my own issue if I am one of the authors? You can send manuscripts that you have authored for inclusion in your issue to

this office for peer review. In such a case, please send the manuscript [email protected] for peer review.

Can a special issue include primary research articles?

Yes. However, if you wish to include a primary research article, please send the manuscript first to [email protected] for approval and review. Only articles of high impact or quality can be considered for publication in FBS. Please note that FBS subsidizes only free publication of reviews. Authors of primary research articles are responsible for publication fee.

I do not see my name in the list of managing editors.

The reason is that you have not qualified to be the sole managing editor and that you require to appoint a qualified primary managing editor. In such cases, you can work with the editor to create your special issue.

I do not see all the manuscripts that I have submitted in my issue.

Your issue is part of many other issues that are included in a normal journal issue. Each journal issue is typically designed to include at least 2,000 pages. Creation of these issues normally takes about 3-12 months depending on the number of manuscripts that are received and processed. There are close to 750 managing editors who submit manuscripts at different times and for this reason, completion of these issues depends entirely on the number of and the date of such submissions. Each issue is created to include a well-balanced representation in different fields of biology and medicine. Moreover, each manuscript is sent to the author for correction and they all require careful review before the necessary files for submission to indexing services such as PubMed, Current Contents, CrossRef are created. Therefore, please provide us with an ample time to carry out the work that is required to publish the manuscripts of your issue. On occasion, despite the fact that the manuscripts are sent to the authors, they do not return the galley or return incomplete galley or publication form. Also, the authors might not have received the galley or the forms due to an email failure or document might have entered their junk mail. You might contact the authors first to inquire whether they have received and submitted their galley and forms.

When should a new editorial form be revised?

Anytime that you get a promotion, change your position and move to a new institution and particularly if your Email changes, please revise your editorial form online.

What are the publication dates for manuscripts in my issue?

Journal issues have about 2,000 pages. It is almost impossible to predict as when a journal issue is fully assembled. A large number of factors impact this assembly and for this reason, it is quite hard to determine the precise publication date of a given manuscript. Such factors as when a manuscript is received from managing editor, the duration that it takes for authors to return the galley and publication forms, the time needed to process a manuscript, and the resources available are just few of these variables. There are over 750 managing editors who send manuscripts for their special issues and for this reason, the time of submission of accepted manuscripts is highly variable. Managing editors normally send manuscripts on different dates and for this reason, there is no model that can predict when a journal issue, which will have sufficient number of pages, can be completed. For all these reasons, please note that we are unable to provide exact publication date for any given manuscript. However, we try our best to publish manuscripts as soon as possible.

Can the articles be updated?Over time, all articles, get outdated and they should be updated by the authors.

Normally, articles are updated every two years. The contents of the published article can be used, however, the title, and abstract should be changed, old information be updated or deleted and new contents be added so that the manuscript can be considered a new publication. All such articles should be peer reviewed for publication.

Dear Dr [Name of the contributing author]:

“Frontiers in Bioscience” is an eminent, peer-reviewed, online virtual library and journal in medicine and biology on the Internet, dedicated to bringing the most up-to-date information to biologists and physicians. The manuscripts published in the "Frontiers in Bioscience" are cited by the Index Medicus, MEDLINE, Current Contents and other indexing services. We are creating an "Encyclopedia of Bioscience" that is dedicated to the assembly of the latest information of specific topics in biology and medicine. As the managing editor of the journal, I would like to invite you to contribute a manuscript to a special edition in this encyclopedia entitled “indicate the title that you chose for the special edition.” The title that you may wish to consider is: “Choose a tentative title, if you are familiar with the author’s work.”We have planned for publication of these special issues on “specify date.” Therefore, it is greatly appreciated if you would let me know as soon as possible whether you agree to cover this or a related subject. On average, each manuscript is 20-25 pages including the figures and tables. Upon publication, your manuscript will be included in the " Encyclopedia of Bioscience " which will ultimately contain nearly 8000 manuscripts. Once your manuscript has been accepted and published in the encyclopedia, we will encourage you to revise the manuscript in a year or two or whenever you feel that an adequate advance in science in the particular subject that you are covering warrants a revision of the on line manuscript. You may delete or add to your first published manuscript to prepare the revised manuscript. After peer review and acceptance of the revised manuscript, it will be assigned a new volume, page number and year. This mechanism will insure that the content of the encyclopedia will remain up-to-date and as a lasting treasure for the scientific community. Frontiers in Bioscience is extensively being accessed by scientists and its content is being cited by many authors. This wide distribution will insure that your scholarly contribution will be easily accessible to a large audience around the globe. In addition, if you wish, your manuscript can become open access, making it possible for any reader to access your manuscript at any time. Please review the content of Frontiers in Bioscience (http://www.bioscience.org), the current issues and the Encyclopedia of Bioscience (http://www.bioscience.org/special-issues-and-managing-editors) online. Please also carefully review the guidelines to authors and formatting instructions on line (http://www.bioscience.org/authors) before submitting a manuscript.

If you agree to contribute a manuscript, please fill and return the following submission form by Email to me. Using my managing editor platform, at the Frontiers in Bioscience, I will then officially invite you to submit your article. When you receive the invitation, please accept the invitation so that manuscript submission and peer review can proceed online. May I suggest that you provide a tentative date for your submission, normally 3-6 months after you accept to contribute a manuscript. You can change this date in case that you can not meet the deadline. Please consider to submit a review article. The publication fee for reviews is subsidized by the Frontiers in Bioscience. To avoid confusion, please do not submit your manuscript to the editorial office of the Frontiers in Bioscience. Your manuscript including text and figures should be submitted to me by email as attachment. Once your manuscript is received, it will be peer reviewed and once accepted, you will receive an acceptance letter.

I will be looking forward to your favorable reply.
