General Female Costume Summary

We want our artist to convey the two different sides to a typical R&B style. This ranges from classy wear, such as long coats fur and jewellery, and edgy ‘sexy’ wear. We want her persona to come across as strong, confident and independent and not aggressive. This would allow our female target audience to be having aspiration towards her instead of being threatened by her and made to feel less.

We wanted to also have our artist wearing gold jewellery as that is a typical convention within R&B music videos; it connotes wealth and our target audience, being young teenagers and adults trying to do well for themselves, will aspire to be; successful.

At the start of our video we wanted to incorporate light pastel and neutral colours, specifically pink and white. This is because they combine with the atmosphere and colours of the park they create a more angelic feel to reflect how the couple were. The rest of the video will frequently and mainly include colours such as black, white, gold, grey to show darkness and sadness and how in a way life has been taken out of her due to the break up.

For most of the video, our artist will be wearing heels during the music video as they are not only fashionable shoes that our target audience tend to wear but they also boost self-esteem making our artist taller and feel sexier. It also creates a metaphorical meaning showing that our artist is the bigger person, looking down on her ex and pitying him rather than herself. High heels are really

common in R&B video’s as they give edge and confidence to the women but also in a way sexualise them and we wanted to keep those conventions as they are present in almost every video we’ve analysed.

In our video we will have restaurant scene in which you finally see the ‘new girl’, however we’ve decided to not let her face show, as if she has no identity, therefore no importance. We wanted to pay attention to the small details such as the nails that will be in the shot and make them pink to match the ‘Barbie Girl’ image and in the contrary the artist would have black nails and be present within most of the shots. Where the new girl will be wearing something light, the artist will be wearing something dark to display her in a sinister light and suggest or foreshadow that the ‘other girl’ will soon turn dark as well when the man she is with him ultimately ends up leaving her as well. There will also be a theme of matriarchal rivalry.

General Male Costume Summary

For the males costume we have picked out trendy, urban outfits that would be mostly worn by boys and young men aged 16-21. Because our Male artist is going to be in the video for a maximum time of 40-50 seconds we have decided that he would be wearing these trendy clothes throughout his

time on set. This particular outfit on the mood board is what we would like to ideally have our model wearing is for the flashback scene. We have chosen Timberland boots for both our male and female leads as firstly, it is very popular in R&B culture as you can see from the example below of Chris Brown who is male R&B artist. He and women around him are following this trend.

Having matching items also creates the idea of togetherness as how the couple both love similar things. It is also a popular brand among our target audience and they will be able to feel as though they can relate to the couple as they are like them; young, cool and trendy.

We would also like to try and include big high street brands such as Nike, Superdry, Topshop as part of our actors outfit as our male audience in particular wear these sort of labels. This would link back to the idea of wealth and the bandwagon appeal as what they wear is similar to one another and most our audience wear these brands to feel in trend. It can also however link back to our audience inspiring to be something greater than just a high street brand.

For the restaurant scene we will have our male as well as female dress in casual formal manner and that would include: jeans, lace up black polished shoes, shirt with a black blazer.

Like the female, we have given the main male objects such as gold watches to reflect his success and to create a persona of the male artist being wealthy and as someone who has achieved a lot; however losing his girlfriend wasn’t an achievement in our main artist’s eyes.
