Genealogy Basics: Sharing Genealogy

Introduction:

This article is about sharing vital records. The focus is on numerous 1961 – 1992 vital burial records supplied to me by Jay Boutilier, a fellow Boutilier genealogist. Jay also included some death dates and obituaries. Some obituaries were pages from newspaper in PDF format. His input points out the fact that I had many incomplete records. Essentially, he correctly pointed out that he had gathered from Newspaper obituaries and obviously I had not.

Specifically, Jay supplied nearly 100 typewritten and PDF formatted pages of items (usually one line per record) that he had gathered from newspapers. The amount and the details in Jay’s efforts are amazing. He organized his material to help me to easily edit or correct hundreds of records. He painstakingly correlated his records to my published Register Reports for the following families: Henry Joseph Boutilier; John David Boutilier; John Peter Boutilier; Susanna (Boutilier) Andrews; Anna Catherine (Boutilier) Besancon/Bezanson; Anna Catherine (Boutilier Besancon) Marriette; Martin Adolphe Camus; Richard Casey; John Cummings, William Hogan; Thomas MacKey/Mackie; John Ormond and George Petrie.

For this article, I’ll show samples using some of Jay’s input.

Finally, please note that Ancestry, FamilySearch and other web sites indicate their preferred citations. Also all “non-copy write” genealogy material on the Internet can be copied. I attribute everything in my genealogy records’ notes (except when the providers requested to be anonomus,.

Background:

A few years ago, for my articles that I contributed to Records/Research sections of the Cape Breton Genealogy and Historical Association’s (CBGHA) knowledge base, I started asking the readers to provide feedback. Specifically on the last page of my articles, I write: “Your corrections, comments and suggestions are appreciated. Please Email me at joe-apg@norwoodlight.com ”.

Similarly, in my Seminars, like the Introduction to Genealogy, (which some volunteers at the Friends of Irish Research call “Genealogy 100”), I stress the benefits of contributing and sharing genealogy. I focus on the Golden Rules in GotGenealogy.

Also, I remind the seminar attendees that they should document their families’ history and share it. Unfortunately, I have known people who have worked on their family history, started to document it but never completed it – and never shared what they had worked on. Tragically, often the research is lost forever.

From now on, I’ll tell seminar attendees about Jay Boutilier’s contributions to my database and Register Reports.

Finally, please note that Jay’s input has been a back-burner item gathering dust for some time. Prior commitments, major surgeries, illnesses, care-giving, software PUPs (potentially unwanted programs) and computer problems (especially in Florida) have all contributed to the delays in processing Jay’s material.
