  • Meet the Artist Gene Bertoncini is one of the pre-eminent jazz guitarists active today. His fluid technique and lyricism have won him international praise and accolades as the "Segovia of jazz." An eloquent and versatile improviser, Mr. Bertoncini has been heard with an extraordinary range of jazz greats, including performances and recordings with Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich, Wayne Shorter, Hubert Laws, Paul Desmond among others, as well as such distinguished singers as Tony Bennett, Lena Horne, Nancy Wilson, Vic Damone, and Eydie Gorme. The Washington Post proclaimed his solo appearance in New York City the best jazz concert of the year 1999. Mr. Bertoncini's acclaim is hardly confined to this country. His CD, "Someone to Light Up My Life" which features his own arrangements of the compositions of the great bossa nova composer Antonio Carlos Jobim, won international raves. Brazilian critic's and listener's polls also named him the best acoustic jazz guitarist. Gene Bertoncini has just released a striking new solo CD, "Quiet Now" on the heels of his highly successful "Acoustic Romance," which reached the top ten of the jazz playlists. Jazziz magazine's March 2004 issue ranked it Number 1 in their list of the top 20 acoustic guitar CDs. His newest CD is called Concerti and features Gene with a string quartet and bass. A prolific and popular studio musician, Bertoncini honed his professional chops as a member of the Tonight Show band during Johnny Carson's tenure, and he has worked with composers and arrangers such as Lalo Schifrin and Michael Legrand and has performed with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. According to the New Yorker magazine, "Bertoncini is an affecting, highly original guitarist that moves easily back and forth between classical and jazz guitar." Mr. Bertoncinis teaching credits include William Patterson University, the Eastman School of Music where he regularly performs and conducts summer workshops for jazz guitarists, the New England Conservatory, New York University, and the Banff School of Fine Arts. He has been a highly sought-after guest clinician in colleges and universities throughout the country. Gene was just nominated as the best jazz guitarist of the year (08) by the New York Jazz Press Association.

    Born: April 6, 1937

Bertoncinis musical roots go back to his early years in the Bronx where he grew up in a house filled with music. His love affair with the guitar began when he was seven, and by the time he was sixteen, he was appearing on New York television.

His career took an unusual turn when he decided to fulfill another long-standing interest, and took a degree in architecture at Notre Dame. He was quickly swept into the musical scene at the university, and the first thing he did after picking up his degree was to work opposite Carmen McRae in Chicago. He returned to New York to work with vibraphonist Mike Manieri, and then with a quintet led by drummer Buddy Rich

New York, NY Sons of Sound proudly announces the September 2, 2003 release of Acoustic Romance (SSPCD017), a quietly beautiful jazz recording featuring the guitar and arrangements of Gene Bertoncini on a program of classic songs that includes The Shadow of Your Smile, Gone With The Wind, Stella By Starlight, Two For The Road, Emily, and other love themes.

In a piece written for The New Yorker, Whitney Balliet described Bertoncini as an affecting, highly original guitarist who moves easily back and forth between classical and jazz guitar. Bassist and frequent collaborator Michael Moore describes Bertoncini as a melodic improvisor. What hes after is a beautiful melody. An architect by training, Bertoncini is acutely aware of arrangement and harmonic structure while applying his prodigious technique to express that beauty.

Gene Bertoncini is unique in his application of classical, nylon-stringed guitar to jazz, an instrumentation that allows him to explore classical and Brazilian styles in his arrangements and improvisation. A recognized master of the instrument, his improvisational sensitivity is melodic, his approach disciplined and respectful.

Audiences are currently being treated to live solo performances of these arrangements. Mr. Bertoncinis concert performances have been described by Bob Blumenthal in The Boston Globe as the most beautiful jazz to be heard. Now these arrangements can be enjoyed for the fi rst time in a trio context, supported by a rhythm section of comparable stature.

Drummer Akira Tana is an active performer and clinician whose credits span 22 years and include Kenny Burrell, Sonny Rollins, Zoot Sims, Sonny Stitt, Cedar Walton, and Dizzy Gillespie. Bassist Rufus Reid has played among legends such as Gene Ammons, Kenny Dorham, Eddie Harris, Sonny Stitt, Don Byas, Philly Joe Jones, Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, Dexter

Sons of Sound is an independent jazz label founded in 1997 to support musicians who support music education. Among many educational endeavors, Mr. Bertoncini was the musical director of the fi rst annual Swing N Jazz event in Rochester, NY, a three-Swing N Jazz event in Rochester, NY, a three-Swing N Jazzday celebration of music education with workshops, concerts, and a fund-raising golf tournament for the benefi t of The Commission Project, a music education nonprofi t. Messrs. Tana and Reid are dedicated music educators in their own right.

Through commerce as well as education, the label strives to bring artistic jazz and classical music to a broader popular audience, under the marketing tag Popular Culture. With Acoustic Romance, the label is making a conscious attempt to bridge a love of jazz artistry with an appreciation for contemporary graphics and popular music. The Acoustic Romancerecording has much to offer traditional jazz audiences as well as contemporary listeners drawn to the vibe of 60s Bacharach or 00s lounge or chill-out. Indeed it was Mr. Bertoncini who originally provided the guitar work many of Mr. Bacharachs resurgently popular hits.

Akira Tana and Rufus Reid are set to return in 2004 with another trio project for Sons of Sound, Moon Over The World with pianist Ted Lo. Until then, they may be heard on Mr. Moon Over The World with pianist Ted Lo. Until then, they may be heard on Mr. Moon Over The WorldTanas Secret Agent Men (Sons of Sound SSPCD012). Gene Bertoncini Art of Solo Jazz Guitar Melbay 2006

The DVD Gene Bertoncini: The Art of Solo Jazz Guitar documents a Master Class with guitarist Bertoncini. A nylon-string guitarist who has worked with the likes of Buddy Rich and Wayne Shorter, Bertoncini answers questions from a small group of off-screen students, while explaining the concepts behind his graceful technique.

Bertoncini discusses how many guitarists tend to memorize chord fingerings without really being aware of whats inside these chords. Switching from electric guitar to the nylon string forces him to slow down to develop the technique for this instrument while also allowing him sufficient time to explain how he started playing scales on the nylon string not across the neck but up and down each

string. Moreover, he analyzes each note in relationship to its complementary chord.

Besides a master's knowledge and insight, Bertoncini demonstrates his consummate mastery of the instrument itself, applying the aforementioned concepts to several jazz standards, including frequently-played albeit challenging tunes like All the Things You Are," Lush Life," and It Had to Be You."

The guitarist also stresses the importance of melody, reminding the assembled students that jazz guitar is not about playing hot licks." Rather, the role of the musician, he emphasizes, is to communicate and tell a story.

The DVD closes with Bertoncini offering up some practical exercises for students to work on, such as keeping the top note the same throughout a tune, demonstrating the application of the technique to various chord tones and their extensions. Finally, he encourages students to expand their ears, advice that might be well heeded by all musicians, regardless of instrument.

For the student guitarist who is a beginner to intermediate, the material covered here would be over their head. For the advanced guitarist, there is a treasure trove of ideas in this DVD, a sufficient number, in fact, to lead the extra-motivated student to virtually total knowledge and freedom on the fret board.

Tracks: Introduction: Half Diminished Scale and Applications; All the Things You Are (Improv); Invitation; Girl Talk; Alone Together; Medley: Sophisticated Lady/ Mood Indigo; Lush Life; Round Midnight; Creating a Melody; The Shadow of Your Smile; Exercises; Medley of Tunes; Here's a Rainy Day.

Gene Bertoncini Body and Soul Chase Music Group By Jim Ferguson

Gene Bertoncini-who plays the nylon-string acoustic guitar with his fingers, a situation ideally suited for solo work-creates sounds that are refined, elegant, and complex. His playing works a tune from the inside, fully exploring its harmonic, melodic, and textural implications much like a classical composer develops an idea on paper. While most of the material here is exceedingly familiar ("The Shadow of Your Smile," "Edelweiss," "Greensleeves") Bertoncini's treatments transform each tune into a unique statement that is constantly changing

  • Quiet Now Gene Bertoncini | Ambient Records (2005)

    By Dr. Judith Schlesinger

If I had to pick one word to describe Gene Bertoncinis luminous guitar playing, it would be especially since my local dictionary offers five meanings of that word, all of which apply to Bertoncinis music: 1) marked by intricate and beautiful design or execution; 2) of such beauty or delicacy as to arouse delight; 3) excellent, flawless; 4) acutely perceptive or discriminating; and 5) intense, keen.

But theres more to say. (Isnt there always?) It's important to note that Quiet Now has exceptional clarity as well as warmth; apparently the newest technology (DSD, SACD) has resurrected the nuanced analog truthfulness that we once had to trade for shelf space. On this CD the guitar sounds both clean and refreshingly naturalistic.

As for the track list, it's as eclectic as Bertoncini himself. More interested in melody and meaning than genre, its typical for him to juxtapose Strayhorn, Coltrane, Schumann, Puccini, and The Streets of Laredo in the same set. ( is part of the Bang the Drum Slowly theme, and it sounds very Irish in Bertoncinis vision.) His acoustic guitar utterly transforms the familiar aria "Nessun Dorma, although his performance is just as moving and passionate as Pavarotti's.

Bertoncini's medleys highlight the commonalities between two compositionslike his pairing of Coltrane Giant Steps with Tadd Damerons surprisingly compatible On a Misty Night the two Strayhorn pieces that bend and stretch in similar ways, and the pair of Bill Evans tunes that underscores those composers wistful harmonies. Perhaps his training as an architect helps him focus on the basic elements of a tunecertainly he's known for paring away schmaltz and convention to expose underlying structure and flow. It may be no coincidence that Tom Jobim, another of our great melodists, also studied architecture. (He's represented here by his beautiful, lesser-known Olha Maria.)

Whatever the occupational roots of this music, the serene purity of Quiet Now offers a perfect antidote to the day's jangly information overload. So does Bertoncinis first solo CD, Body and Soul (Ambient Records, 1999), which is also exquisite in all five senses of the word. [Note to the producers: do we have to wait another six years for the next one??]

Track listing: Lush Life/Isfahan, My One and Only Love, Giant Steps/On a Misty Night, Traumerei, So in Love/The More I See You, Olha Maria, Quiet Now, Nessun Dorma, Waltz for Debbie/Very Early, Theme from Bang the Drum Slowly

  • Concerti Gene Bertoncini | Ambient Records (2008) By Michael P. Gladstone

What could possibly be better than hearing guitarist extraordinaire Gene Bertoncini on Concerti? Simply, being ten feet away from the bandstand and viewing his quicksilver style of playing, astounding an appreciative audience.

Bertoncini, over the course of several decades, has become an elder statesman plectrist, working in a number of settingssolo, duet, trio or larger ensembles. On Concierti , Bertoncini works with members of The Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where he has been a teacher for many years. With the exception of "Invitation," all of the arrangements were written by Bertoncini's colleagues at Eastman.

For purposes of presentation, the guitarist is working here with a string quartet that consists of Mark Feldman (first violin), Rob Morse (second violin), Kelly Dylia (viola) and Dana Leong (cello). In addition, ubiquitous New York jazz bassist David Finck is also a member of the ensemble.

The classical influence and jazz tendencies of Mark Feldman's work with guitarist John Abercrombie's quartet and his own ECM (2006's What Exit) can also be heard here.

The tunes selected for this album consist of six compositions that loosely fit under the heading of the Great American Songbook, including Bronislaw Kaper's "Invitation," Brooks Bowman's "East of the Sun," and even the Lennon/McCartney Beatles tune, "Eleanor Rigby." The remaining tracks include Bertoncini's "For Chet," with the late trumpeter Chet Baker in mind (and a frequent Bertoncini employer), and a 13-minute version of Joaquin Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez," segueing into piano icon Chick Corea's "Spain."

A most interesting aspect of the album is the way that Bertoncini and colleagues take turns emphasizing his acoustic nylon-string guitar, while keeping the strings tamped down on "East of the Sun" or quite the opposite for "Eleanor Rigby," where the melody's sharp edges are undertaken by the strings thus giving it a keener presentation than usual.

Likewise, a medley of Frederic Chopin's "Prelude (excerpt Opus 28 #4)," which melds into Jobim's ballad "How Insensitive," is played with the strings far in the background, while Cole Porter's "Every Time We Say Goodbye" provides an unusual take with the viola, cello and violins all ablaze.

This is an album that is full of surprises and one that is worthy of the Bertoncini's unmistakable musicianship.

Track listing: East Of The Sun; You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To; For Chet; Eleanor Rigby; Every Time We Say Goodbye; Prelude (excerpt Opus 28 #4)/How Insensitive; Invitation; Concierto de Aranjuez/Spain.

Personnel: Gene Bertoncini: acoustic guitar; David Finck: bass; Mark Feldman: first violin; Rob Moose: second violin; Kelly Dylia: viola; Dana Leong: cello.

  • Smile: Jazz Therapy Volume 1 Gene Bertoncini / Roni Ben-Hur | Motema Music (2008)

    By J Hunter

In November 2007, Roni Ben-Hur and his bassist Earl May approached Motema Records with a great idea: They would record a duo CD, pro bono, as a fundraiser for the Dizzy Gillespie Memorial Fund, a trust created by Englewood Hospital and Medical Center to fund health care for jazz musicians who can't afford it (i.e. just about every player not named Wynton Marsalis). May's sudden death the following January could have sent this worthy concept off the rails; instead, Gene Bertoncini stepped into the breach, and the results are absolutely brilliant.

Smile (dedicated to May, whose ever-present grin inspired Ben-Hur to include Charlie Chaplin's timeless ballad in this 10-song set) is a living definition of the word "simpatico." These two guitarists have played together on and off since the early '90s, but their interplay and mutual sense of musical space sounds like it comes from a years-long collaboration. In fact, the tunes themselves become secondary to experiencing the entrancing sound that comes from the multi-layered dialogue between Ben-Hur's hollow-body electric and Bertoncini's nylon-string acoustic.

Bertoncini leads off on the Charles Fox/Norman Gimble classic "Killing Me Softly," instantly achieving an intimacy that almost eclipses Roberta Flack's signature performance. When Ben-Hur joins in on the chorus, none of that intimacy is lost; instead, a conversation ensues between two people who witnessed the same thing. Although both speakers are passionate about what they experienced, the conversation stays hushed, as if they don't want anyone to hear about the singer who "sang as if he knew me/In all my dark despair..."

While the standards on Smile seem straightforward, Ben-Hur and Bertoncini add a few personal touches. The chorus of "Killing Me Softly" gets a little bit of a stagger, as if the protagonists are slightly stunned at their antagonist's insight, while Cole Porter's "I Concentrate on You" has a sheen that comes from the Brazilian sun. Meanwhile, "Besame Mucho" is as rich and romantic as it's supposed to be, just as the title track has the stiff upper lip that it should, and Dizzy's own "That's Earl, Brother" gets down and swings even as it stays within the date's relatively sedate boundaries.

Both players bring originals to the partyBen-Hur with "Anna's Dance" and "Sofia's Butterfly" (each tune named for one of Ben-Hur's daughters), Bertoncini with "You Are a Story" and "Set Blue" (a deconstruction of "Bluesette")but none of them have any sense of ownership, or an attitude of "This is my song!" The spirit of simpatico remains strong, as does the air of cooperation and collaboration. It gets to the point where the only way to discern who's playing what is with a good set of headphones. Happily, that makes the experience all the more enjoyable.

Apart from being a beautiful set, Smile literally enriches an aspect of Dizzy Gillespie's legacy that many people may be unaware of. If that isn't a win-win situation, it will do until a better example comes along.

Acoustic guitar master returns+ A glance at Gene Bertoncini's date

book over the past yearwould reveal the sort of career many musicians can only dream of.

Start with his last album release about a year ago. While Concerti (Ambie.ll t Records 2008) is a little more arranged and a little less jazzy than most of Bertoncini's projectS, it's still a gorgeous recording. The New York-based acoustic guitar master is featured in front of a lush string quintet on a mix ofstandards as well as the beautiful adagio from JoaquinRodrigo's famous Concerto deAranjuez.

Since that release Bertoncini has done a mix of solo and small group performances. He has continued to put in periodic shifts as an educator at a couple of the top colleges in the NewYork area, and he's just finished three nights playing with Wyntan Marsalis and the J azz At Lincoln Center Orchestra paying tribute to Mary Lou Williams. Then there are his frequent touring gigs, including the one that brings him back to Edmonton to head up a trio at the Yardbird today and Saturday.

"I feel blessed to have been born with a certain amount of taste that it gets me all these opportunities," says the soft-spoken Be.rtoncini.

Yes, his innate good taste certainly

    v :::I 0""

    j ~

    '"' ~ ~

has something to dowith his creative success.

But the man's incredible technical finesse and the arranging skills that can make a solo take of a complex Brazilian bossa nova tune take flight are anotherpart of the story. Oh, and Bertoncini is also an extremely nice guy.

Alllhings considered, he doesn't fit the stereotype of someone who grew up in the Bronx.

Bertoncini admits he neverhad any interest in playing loud rock 'n' rollor pop music. He was playing clubs at 16, a protege of Johnny Smith, but he claims he owes much to his first guitar teacher ChuckWayne.

Over the years Ber toncini has worked with a long list of music greats, including Tony Bennett, Benny Goodrnan and Wayne Shorter, along with a stint in the Tonight Show Band during the Johnny Carson era.

Later on, Bertoncini's friendship with bossa nova pioneer Joao Gilberto gave him an expertgrounding in Brazilian grooves, and in return Gilberto used to borrow Bertoncini's guitar for his performances in New York.

It's not for nothing that the man got a degree in architecture before he decided to devote himself to music full time.

Just listen to the measured w ay that Bertoncini constructs soulful improvisations w ith the precision of a classical player.

In fact, last year the New York Classical Guitar Society did a tribute concert to honour the artist theydubbed "the Segovia ofjazz."

While Bertoncini gets a kick out of playing solo, he allows that trio work "really frees you up" from carrying both the rhythm and melody parts to take extended musical manoeuvres.

Thisweekend hewill enjoy the expert company of bassist Mike Lent and drummer Sandro Dominelli.

Bertoncini's trio plays today and Saturday at 9 p.m. at the Yardbird Suite (corner of 102nd Street and 86th Avenue).

Tickets are $20 for members, $24 for guests, in advance from Ticketmaster or at the door.

  • While most jazz gUitarists prefer an electric axe, a small group remains loyal to the subtlety and warmth of an acoustic instrument. This is their story.

    By BILL MILKOWSKI

Ever since Charlie Christian plugged his Gibson L-5 electric guitar into an amplifier and wailed with legato abandon back in 1939, the acoustic guitar has taken a backseat in jazz. Through the years, certain virtuoso players have switched back and forth regularly between acoustic and electric guitar, making significant statements on both axes - fusion guitar heroes Larry Coryell, John McLaughlin, and AI DiMeola spring to mind. Individually or together with Spain's flamenco master Paco de Lucia as the fabled Trio, these players have added to the canon of acoustic-guitar music since the early '70S.

"I love the sound of acoustic guitar," said McLaughlin, after a recent performance in New York with his dazzling Remember Shakti ensemble. "It's something I can't be without for too long. I don't know what it is, it's just so ... evocative. It's an antique sound. And it makes some very different resonances inside of you your heart or your soul, your subconscious or \Nhatever you want to call it. But it touches ant)ther part of you. And it has this kind of pathos built into it that electric gUitar doesn't have. It's got its own thing."

Many electric-guitar players have recorded an occa~ional all-acoustic album (see Sidebar), but precious few players have specialized in acoustic playing over the course of their careers. With 18 adventurous outings on the ECM label, Ralph Towner is an obvious figurehead among nylon-string acoustic players. So too is smooth-jazz icon Earl Klugh, as well as classically-trained Fareed Haque, vyho recorded a series of adventurous CDs for Blue Note in the '90S and now plays with the jamband Garage MahaL And the late Charlie Byrd was a pioneer who brought classical-guitar elements to jazz, and also helped introduce Brazilian music to North American audiences with 1962'S Jazz Samba, on which he was co-billed with Stan Getz.

Anqther pioneer of the nylon-string acoustic - or classical- guitar in jazz is Gene Bertoncini. A one-time sideman to Buddy Rich, accompanist to Lena Horne and Tony Bennett,

    - BILL MILKOWSKI

and a member of the late-'60s Tonight Show Band, the 66-year-old Bertoncini began playing the classical guitar in 19 62, just as the bossa nova craze hit the States. "I started listening to that music and I became very friendly with the great Braziliiin artist [singer-songwriter-guitarist] loao Gilberto, who used to hang out where I played," he explains. "Joao was. still married to Astrud [Gilberto, of ' Girl From lpanema' fame1in those days. Later on, he used to borrow my guitar whenever he came to New York. Actually, I learned how to play bossanova style just by listening to loao's recording of 'Quiet Nights: And from there, I began blend" ing the classical techniques with bossa nova and jazz."

Bertoncini's interest in classical guitar goes

back further than his association with Gilberto. While taking lessons during the '50S with George Shearing's guitarist, Chuck Wayne, he was urged to check out the great classical player Julian Bream. "I put on a record by him and heard him doing Ravel's Pavane, and I just flipped," Bertoncini recalls. ':And in that moment 1said, 'I gotta study classical guitar: That was the beginning of playing nylon-string classical gUitar for me.

"Ultimately, 1began practicing a lot of linear stuff and started trying to play Jazz lines on it, which involved a lot of slurring techniques and, you know, just trying to sound like a saxophone. If you try to articulate every note, it sounds kind of stiff, but 1developed this feel fot playing jazz lines on it, too. Then, of course, that

mstrument just opens up the world harmonically, too. You start thinking orchestrally and in a different way when you're playing the classical guitar."

While Bertoncini continues to play both electric and nylon-string acoustic guitar, he has developed a more distinctive voice on the classical axe. On his most recent release, Acoustic Romance (Sons of Sound), he demonstrates his pleasantly melodic, countrapuntal approach in an acoustic trio setting with bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Akira Tana on a set of familiar yet inventively reworked jazz standards like "The Shadow of Your Smile," "Girl Talk," "Stella by Starlight" "'Round Midnight," and IITn'irit'::ltinn "

paradoxalmente, o nmero de edies e reedies aumentou muito.

Para variar, foram necessrias vrias semanas para a preparao de

todas estas listas, reouvindo discos, revendo DVDs, checando fichas

tcnicas e, s vezes, reavaliando opinies.

automaticamente inelegveis.

to fantstica neste instrumento em 2007), embora o disco no

merea figurar entre os melhores CDs. A esto os resultados
