Communication Within a Nuclear Family

Family is usually the first and one of the most influential sources of information about gender, and is the primary place where many people are taught women and men are essentially different and, hence, should have different and/or unequal roles (Risman, 1998).

These different and unequal roles are known as Gender roles. This phrase commonly used to refer to feminine and masculine social expectations in a family based on a persons sex.

Gender role socialization largely takes place in the family particularlythrough parental modeling and parent-child interaction.

Growing up, my mom ran a daycare while my dad worked hard labor at Bath Iron Works. This is when I first learned that the Mother's role was to take care of the children and clean the house, while the Dad's role was to work hard to provide for his family.

Even though running a daycare was still hard work, it still depicted a typical women's role; Cleaning, cooking and caring for children.

These gender roles are often researched among nuclear families.

Primary functions of a family are to teach and maintain cultural norms, including gender norms and roles.

Parents techniques of teaching these gender roles can be concious or unconcious. This means an effort can be made to teach their children these roles, or it can be done simply by providing an example.

Hegemonic Masculinity, Subordinate femininity and heterosexual romance reinforce the normative power of the nuclear family.
