CLAUDIO DE DONATO - Petroleum Engineer, Business Development Advisor
Claudio holds an MSc in Industrial Chemistry from University of Milan. After writing few papers for
technical magazines, he joined Shell in 1997 and worked internationally in a number of operational and
commercial roles, developing breadth of commercial experience in upstream negotiations, global new
business development in UK, Netherlands and Canada, as well as downstream sales/trading. Starting in the
Chemicals business as catalysts developer, he then managed marketing & sales of Base Chemicals (Ethylene
Oxides, Polyurethanes) in Europe. In 2002 he drifted into upstream commercial roles and discovered a
talent for overlaying the operational view into the commercial agreements process. A major component of
his activities has been representing Shell Operated Assets in the UK Central North Sea, covering most types
of gas and oil agreements together with extensive co-venture management that culminated with a gas field
unitisation dispute resolution. In 2006 Claudio moved to the Group’s upstream global business
development, combining expertise with practical experience to identify, scope and deliver industry leading
growth and portfolio management opportunities in some of the world’s most important production areas.
Typical opportunities such as asset/corporate acquisitions, swaps, farm-ins and deal rationales of all types
were pursued through the combination of creative thinking and analytical skills. Areas of focus: Shale gas in
West Canada (acquisition, 2008), Non-organic gas growth in Libya, Small caps acquisitions (Australia), New
gas monetization alternative to unlock development of stranded gas reserves. In early 2009, as a
broadening assignment, he joined the largest European Private Equity Energy Fund as Investment Manager,
maturing and executing investment opportunities.
