Day 1, Monday, was a serene autumn day, and starting the journey in a hotel car park seemed auspicious. New faces were friends by the time morning tea was had at Wallan, lunch at Euroa, Milawa at Brown Bros for ‘supplies’. The valley closed in and embraced us, and late autumn colour splashes intensified the scene. A happy arrival awaited us into cosy accommodation in chalet style units with camellia and rhododendron peeping in at the windows. The management team of Neene and Ed Gardner of Casbak on the Ovens, Alpine Units, (Google them) both ex-Geelong folk, expressed good memories of the group of last year. Cosy fires, good food, Tony in fine form, and early (for some) to bed.

Day 2 dawned with rain showers, patches of blue

sky, lots of wind, and not much inducement for plein-air watercolour work. Autumn colours were everywhere, but muted and damp. Much of the colour was already on the ground and swathes of wash tones of yellow, red and brown over grey-green may have been indicated to some. After breakfast, a noisy and happy affair, a few strolled outside to river rippling and gurgling and more colour; others stayed indoors, cleared the table, and painted there. All good so far. In the afternoon a heavy cold squall sent all of us indoors, and a few to the cosy coffee shop over the road. Later pm Tony obliged with a well presented and vigorously questioned and critiqued demonstration of what could be seen outside. Ah, the subtlety, adaptability,

vibrancy and rewards of water colour. Then more resting, puzzles, and even more painting. Subjects were everywhere. Harrietville celebrates its gold mining history, and statuary, bridges, buildings and memorials were nearby. The planter ‘boxes’ in the streets are buckets from the gold dredge that worked the whole valley floor, and a subject in their own right. No idle time, as art videos were shown and debated informally. Tony again in form as tutor, caterer, cook and raconteur.

Day 3 was cold but mostly dry. Janet Baird and Tony, hardy souls, ventured out to a nearby cottage scene and plied their trade. Ask Janet about her hat, knitted by a man, in South America, and very colourful! Less hardy souls continued inside in the warmth from the Scarlet Oak and Liquidambar firewood. More videos, the collegial viewing was instructive, and group bonding continued.

Day 4, Thursday, home time. We had lunch in Bright, after having a good look at the Bright Autumn Art Show, and appreciating the work of a few familiar artists. Then the valley widened out, colours changed again to a

more muted palette, the mood was more reflective and content, and inclinations were formed to do it all again. And thus we were all safely home again. Gregor Wallace.

TONY'S TOUR TO HARRIETVILLE was from 4th to 7th May 2015

O ver The Top with Tony. Well, it was over the Great Dividing Range at

least, but behaviours were always impeccable.

SECRETARY’S REPORT I am pleased to report that Saint John of God hospital

has reconsidered its association with the Art Society and will make available an art space in the near future for our members to again display their work at the hospital, we shall keep you informed.

Don’t forget the General meeting on Sunday 14th June at 3.00pm. This is a great opportunity to discuss the art society and ask questions of concern. We also have a very interesting demonstrator, Andrew Tischler, a realist artist inspired by the environment and a good opportunity to socialize with other members.

Remember that the annual subscriptions are due on 1st July and there is a small increase to both the single and family subscription rate. Please support your art society by remaining a paid up member and by your continued attendance in our classes. The annual single subscription for members is $100 / year an increase of $12.00 and family subscription to $150.00, we will waiver the joining fee for new members

I must stress again the need for input from members who are willing to offer some of their time/expertise in the ongoing running of this Society, we have outgoing long term members of the Committee whose positions will have to be replaced at the next AGM in August…we need members to step up to the cause!. The Waverley Art Society had to recently close their doors because they were unable to form a committee from their membership, our Society has achieved so much over recent years and it would be a

tragedy if we were to suffer the same fate.

Michele Karakasch On behalf of the Committee Michele Karakasch, GAS secretary

Contributions for the July newsletter are due by Wednesday 24th June.

SHEARERS ARMS GALLERY

Letter As a member of the Geelong Art Society, I would

like to express my appreciation for the excellent work which has gone on to present the Shearers Arms Gallery as it is now is.

Shearers Arms building is almost as old as the colony of Victoria itself. Victoria was created by decree in1850and our building is only a few years after that announcement. It is a perfect background for the presentation of art that we make; it deserves every support.

Thank you to those have spent hours on the repair and the gardens. Please, younger members, give it your attention. Shearers Arms deserves to live on.

My forebears in Geelong were James Fisher and son William, both blacksmiths who came to Geelong from Ayreshire, Scotland, on the "Black Eagle" in 1854. They went carting to the goldfields and had the edge on other carters because they could shoe bullocks! James Fisher was the uncle of Andrew Fisher, who later became Prime Minister of the young Commonwealth of Australia. It is likely that James and William knew the original Shearers Arms on their way to the Ballarat goldfields from their forge in West Fyans Street!!

Sincerely, Ann Bell (nee Fisher, great, great granddaughter)

WHICH HOBBY IS BEST FOR YOUR BRAIN?

L ife-drawing enrolments may surge thanks to the findings of a new US study published in the journal

Neurology. It revealed that a fine art hobby such as painting, drawing or sculpting has the greatest effect on reducing the risk of dementia and memory loss. The four-year Mayo Clinic study looked at the leisure activities of 256 people with an average age of 87, and discovered that starting such artistic pursuits when they were middle aged showed the most protective benefit for their cognitive function.

Here's how various hobbies reduced the risk of mild cognitive impairment:

PAINTING, DRAWING, SCULPTING, POTTERY, 73% less risk QUILTING, SEWING, 45% less risk SOCIALISING 55% less risk COMPUTER USE 53% less risk
