Our favourite free camping locations across Australia.If Christmas is hitting your bank balance a little harder than you like, don’t despair we have put together a list of free or low cost camping options to suit everyone.

FOOTLOOSE AND FANCY FREE

Great Ocean Road - VICRenowned as one of the most scenic drives in the world, is the Great Ocean Road, which stretches from Geelong to Portland. At 243 kilometres long, the Great Ocean Road is the world’s largest war memorial. The Great Ocean Road also offers beginners the chance to get off the main road and experience the Otways drive which has been rated Easy in dry conditions by Victoria’s 4WD Recreational Track Classification System.

New South WalesLocated in Cocoparra National Park just half hour driveof Griffith in the NSW Riverina, is the beautiful Woolshed Flat Campground. With eco toilets, barbeques and fireplaces, it is the perfect place to base yourself for bushwalking, birdwatching or some off-roading in the national park. 2WD vehicles can get to the campsite but the road does become boggy after rain.

Northern TerritoryLitchfield National Park is a national icon and a must do foranyone visiting Darwin. Only accessible by 4WD SurpriseCreek Camping area is home to magic swimming spotswith hidden plunge pools. The site is the most secluded inLitchfield and has no drinkable water but does have ecotoilets. Generators and pets are not permitted inside thepark. Cost is $3.30 per adult, $1.65 per child or $7.70 perfamily (2 adults and 4 children).

QueenslandBoth the campsites Cedar Grove and Amamoor Creekcamping area located in the stunning Amamoor State Forest just 2-hours north of Brisbane are suitable for bringing vans in. Not quite free at $6.15 per person per night or $24.60 per family, the national park has some amazing walks. Firewood should be brought in and dogs are allowed in Amamoor Creek camping area only. The Amamoor Creek camping area does become home to the Gympie Music Muster in late August and access is restricted to festival ticket holders.

South AustraliaSettled in the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park oneof South Australia’s most popular tourist destinations is

the Acraman camping area, one of the smallest camping sites in the park. Perfect for exploring the Heysen Trail and the Wilpena Pound area the campsite is designed for downto earth campers with only basic toilets available. No dogsare allowed in the park and camp fees are $15 per night.

TasmaniaWith almost 40% of Tasmania protected national parksand reserves you are sure to find some of Australia’s mostpicturesque campsites in the apple isle. You will have tobuy a national parks pass to access them, but they start at$60 per vehicle and you can use any of the free camp sites.Our favourite would have to be Apsley Waterhole campingarea, in the Douglas-Apsley National Park on the East Coast of Tasmania. The camp site it is a 10 minute walk from the carpark but the waterhole makes it worth it.

VictoriaHowqua Hills about 30 minutes from Mansfield in theMount Buller region, with six free camp areas, campsitesare on a first come, first served basis. The camp areas havenon-flush toilets and BYO firewood campfires are allowed(subject to fire restrictions) in fireplaces provided and dogsare allowed on leads. The area has heaps great activitiesincluding off-roading, bushwalking, fishing, gold-panningand seasonal horse riding.

Western Australia550km north of Perth is Lucky Bay, Kalbarri, oneof the most beautiful beach camping spots in Australia.Not quite free but for $15 a night per vehicle you can’tgo past it. This is back to nature camping at its bestand you need to be pretty self-sufficient, but thebeach is amazing and you can fish, swim and kayakto your hearts content and there are some great dunesfor playing with your 4x4. Remember this is sand,so recovery tracks and low tyre pressures are a must.
