A true selective coordination design must ensure that every Over Current Protective Device (OCPD) has higher overcurrent rating and a longer time-delay than the one below it, so that every fault will be cleared by the OCPD immediately “upstream” of the fault

• If Fault occurs at CL1, only OCPD7 should open…all other loads should remain operational

• The ATS must withstand a fault, close on potential fault and be functional after the fault to be properly coordinated…it must have a “UL Short Time Rating”
