Dear Members,
I am proud to report this has been a year of impres-sive achievement, not only within our organization, but also within our state. We couldn’t have made such strides without your dedication, passion and hard work.
Most importantly, our first annual campaign received generous contributions from every member of the Board and 20% of members from all 47 clubs. As a result, we will be able to reduce the draw on our endowment fund, which has grown this year by 13%.
Meanwhile, the Boy Scouts of America, a very worthy organization, considered re-locating their Jamboree to a site just north of Goshen Pass. How-ever, Katharine and Mary Stuart Gilliam and the members of The Blue Ridge Garden Club realized the devastating effects increased traffic and waste disposal posed along the Maury River. Eventually—thanks to their efforts and a letter to the governor from the Garden Club of Virginia—the Boy Scouts concluded this was not a suitable long-term site, and the idyl-lic nature of Rockbridge County was preserved.
Internally, using the Strategic Plan as our guide, we’ve enacted changes to strengthen and unify our organization. All committees now operate under one consolidated budget. The Board has been expanded to include chairs of Horticulture, Development and Flower Shows as voting members. We’ve lessened the financial burden on clubs by reducing required inter-club entries in flower shows from three to two, beginning in 2011. With Directors-at-Large representing each of our six regions, communication is now more effective. Finally, we adopted a new logo designed to convey our identity and purpose to both members and the general public.
So once again, thank you all. It has been a wonderful, productive two years.
With gratitude,

theme was “Quality of Life: Past, Present,

organic farmer to an envi-

future symposia, members
are now anticipating another
gratifying educational and
social experience in 2012.

Mary Frances Buchanan Flow-

Garden Club of Virginia’s most
celebrated president. She was
37 when she first joined The Box-
wood Club: 91 when she passed
away this past March. Under her
presidency, the club attained
tax-exempt status, amended
its by-laws, and purchased and
restored the Kent Valentine
House. A tireless “doer and or-
ganizer,” Mary Flowers spent so
much time at the Kent Valentine
House, her young grandson ac-
tually thought she lived there.
Tribute to Garden Club friends
The 2010 Massie Medal for Distinguished Achieve-
ment was awarded to Mina
Walker Wood. A member
of The Lynchburg Garden
Club since 1968, she has held
more Board and commit-
tee positions than any other
member. Mina is also a tal-
ented landscape designer.
