Assessment and progress reports

• Year 11 will have 3 progress reports-one in October, one in December and one in February.

• In order to give parents feedback on student progress, assessment will be standardised and ongoing.

• Communication between teachers and parents will be key and any student not achieving their MAG will be invited to attend after school sessions – which is what we are talking about this evening.

Why is my child being asked to attend after school lessons?

• Your child has been identified as being at risk of not attaining 2 A*C grades in GCSE Science.

• These could be either:

– GCSE core science (resits)

– GCSE additional science

– GCSE core (resits) and additional science

When are the after school lessons?

• TIME: 3-15pm 4-15pm

• DAY: This depends on which group you are in.

– (Tuesday and/or Wednesday)

• You should also have received this information in a letter.

What is in the after school support lessons?

• Glossary & key terms

• Teaching of the subject matter

• Past paper question & marking

– A record of these marks will be kept to inform your child’s class-teacher of their progress.

Course guidelines- a reminder: 1. Additional Science - this will be examined in June 2014 and consists

of 3 exams and one practical controlled assessment (each component makes up 25% of the final grade). The controlled assessment is carried out during lessons shortly after Christmas.

Exam dates: Biology Friday 6th June 2014 Chemistry Tuesday 10th June 2014 Physics Thursday 12 June 2014 2. Core Science resits – (Yr 10 material) Exam dates: Biology Tuesday 13th May 2014 Chemistry Thursday 15th May 2014 Physics Monday 19th May 2014

Mentoring/coaching.

• In addition some students may be given targeted mentoring / coaching from a variety of sources:

– Senior team – SLT members

– Senior Science staff – Subject or KeyStage leaders

– Student coaches - 6th form students who are trained coaches

How will I know if they don’t turn up to the after school lesson?

• If your child misses two after school lessons and they were present in school, you will receive a phone call.

• If they miss more than three sessions a member of the Senior Team will call you.

What is the after school support? • Your child will have up to 2 taught sessions

after school per GCSE Science course they are at risk in.

• The course will be broken down into 12 weeks, each week will tackle a section from the subject.

– 4 weeks x Bio, 4 weeks x Chem, 4 weeks x Phys

• Your child will know the content of the session (as it is advertised on the Science corridors) a few weeks beforehand so they can do some pre-reading.

How will I know how it is going?

• Your child will have a intervention/support report that they will be asked to bring to each after school session.

• This will be a record of attendance, topics studied and the marks that they have achieved on the past paper questions.

How can we, as parents, help?

• Talk to your child about what they were taught in the after school session.

• Ask them about the past paper question and how they got on, get your child to identify their WWW & EBI, ask them how they will improve?

• Test your child on the key terms/definitions.

• Encourage your child to use ActiveLearn and their revision guide.

The exam board is Edexcel for both courses
