• Teachers may use AQA-set tasks or adapt AQA-set tasks or devise own tasks. Can get tasks checked by Controlled Assessment Adviser

• Task titles and bullet points must be in English

• If teachers use the same task for a number of students, the unpredictable question must be changed randomly

• Tasks may have different numbers of bullet points but students should address all the main bullet points in the task they are given or the Communication mark will be affected (see published mark scheme)

• If teachers use tasks from the specification, they must change the unpredictable element

• The two tasks for Speaking must be different from each other; the same titles cannot be used for Writing

• A minimum of three main bullet points is recommended for each task

• Less able students may benefit from sub-divided bullet points

• To change the tasks every two years, it is sufficient to adapt the tasks by changing at least one of the main bullet points

• Teachers should look carefully at the assessment criteria when devising tasks

• There is no need to use the full 6 hours for each task

• There is no need to tell AQA at what point students are given the task

• Teachers’ feedback on plans must not include comments relating to the language used (eg. ‘add a past tense’) but could say, for example, the bullet point requiring students to talk about past events had not been covered

• Students must mark any amendments on original plan, totally obliterating unauthorised material; no correction fluid may be used

• Practice recordings may be produced but no-one is permitted to comment on them. Any scripted drafts or practice recordings must be produced under the teacher’s direct supervision

• Stage 3 - final version produced; students have access to the task itself and the plan (if produced); no other resources permitted

• Tasks should normally last 4–6 minutes from the time the teacher asks the first bullet

• Remove posters/wall charts etc if these provide additional, unauthorised resources

• Teachers should ask follow-up questions to encourage students to develop their answers to each bullet point but if a student gives a full answer without prompting, the student has access to the highest marks
