1. OPENINGS

• Openings feature as important elements in the work of many artists. Painters eg. Pieter de Hooch, Henri Matisse used openings to frame view of the outside world. The Sculptor Barbara Hepworth explored the contrast between solid form and open space.

Research appropriate sources and PRODUCE OWN RESPONSE.

2. DISGUISE• Masks (African ritualistic, Balinese dance, Japanese Noh dramas) used to alter or disguise the

wearers identity. Makeup, costume and hairstyle can also change or disguise appearance. Photo manipulation is also used to alter appearance.

Investigate relevant sources and develop your own response to disguising:

EITHER 1. YOUR appearance or identity

OR 2. SOMEONE elses’s appearance or identity

3. MIRROR IMAGEs• Mirrors are used by artists to record their SELF PORTRAITs eg. Bernini’s David, Caravaggio’s

Medusa. Images of mirrors and reflections they show feature in ‘The MoneyLender and his Wife by Quentin Metsys and Lee Friedlanders photographs ‘America by Car’. Actual mirrors have been used in the scultpures of Anish Kapoor and the installations of Yayoi Kusami.

4. ON THE EDGE• French artist Jean Dubuffet inspired by artists who were seen to be ‘on the edge’ of the

mainstream art world. Art Brut or Outsider Art, work by artists such as Madge Gill, Chris Hipkiss and Albert Louden.

5. GARDENS• Gardens have inspired artists. Images of gardens appear in Ancient Egyptian and Roman Wall

paintings and in Persian and Indian miniatures. Monet created his own garden at Giverny. Artists such as Niki de Saint Phalle and ian Hamilton Finlay haved used gardens as the setting for art works.

• RESEARCH AND DEVELOP YOUR OWN RESPONSE

• Eg. Garden furniture, equipment, sheds, greenhouses, plants, insects and creatures in a garden setting. Different lighting on a garden affecting colour, pattern and texture etc.

6. TEXTURE• Artists such as Frank Auerbach, Chris Drury and Anselm Kiefer have created visual and tactile

textures in their work. John Blakemore and Olivia Parker have used camera controls and lighting to emphasise textural qualities in black and white photographs of natural forms.

b) You could create work inspired by a ‘fragment’ of a story, film or piece of music

c) You might explore ‘fragmented’ views of your surroundings.
