The enquiry is based on a concise design brief, namely, to create an album cover for a metal

band using the theme of geometry. This acts as an overarching framework for the entire unit.

The submission is presented almost exclusively in digital format and includes elements of

foundation studies such as typographical forms, essential aspects of digital photography and

its uses in graphic design. Relevant contextual sources, such as the work of Alexis Marcon,

are investigated and include examples of geometrical graphic images, album designs based

on geometry and album designs for metal bands.

The workbook includes research into elements of colour, such as saturation, limited palette

and isolated colour. Layout, balance and asymmetry and their application to graphic design is

also considered in advance of a more focused development of album design possibilities.

Abstracted elements of the candidate’s own photographs of an electric guitar are introduced

and digitally manipulated to extend the range of design options. The design development is

documented through the use of selected screen grabs and relevant written commentary and

the final design is presented as a full size album cover.
