General optimization potential

mostly in cross-section techniques: - compressed air - refrigeration - air conditioning - lighting - cleaning Higher energy efficiency through waste recycling

(like in a biogas plant)

Case study in North Rhine-Westphalia Heat recovery from waste heat cooling tunnel for pasteurization 75% reduction (75,000 ³ gas), NRW

Optimized operation of the cooling system in dairy processing (refrigeration compressor) 30% reduction in electricity savings (1.400 MWh)

Primary energy demand in baths: High heat demand

- in the sauna - in swimming pools (continuous evaporation of water surface) - hot water by showering Power consumption and heat sink requirements during summer months Typical power consumption of a bath (built after 1990):

Source: Böttcher 2009

kWh per m² of water

Heat 3.500

Power 1.300

Possible Improvement:

relatively simple measures can generate 50% energy savings

- pool cover - demand controlled ventilation - saving circuits - insulation, etc. Possible measures in almost all areas: - electrical engineering - heating - ventilation - water - the building itself

Market analysis – Spas/Hotels

Page 18: GBE Factory | Market analysis - Brandenburg

Climate and energy into thermal baths spas hotels

- Image matter! - "Green image" desirable, as tourists in the spa and health area would often have a sustainable living - DEHOGA also makes in his attention to the energy campaign image aspect:

- Climate-friendly tourism products are already dealt and the "Land of Brandenburg Tourism Concept 2011-2015" gives energy efficiency high priority("Green Brandenburg")

Empirical Investigation:

Focus group Topics: energy efficiency and local energy production 7 March 2012 @ the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce

24 participants Speakers from Potsdam Chamber of Commerce + Brandenburg Economic Development Board Moderated discussion on

current energy situation of participating companies + necessary support needed Consulting engineers participated in the focus group part

First contacts have been made 7 questionnaires based on telephone interviews + 3 personal discussion @ Focus Group

Determination of quantitative data through questionnaires entrepreneurs (through participating companies, focus group and interview partners)

Market analysis – Food Processing Industry

Empirical Investigation

10 questionnaires answered by entrepreneurs - based on telephone interviews * 8 thermal and leisure pools

approx. 50% of Brandenburg's Baths * 2 spa hotels with thermal operating Determination of quantitative data through questionnaires - energy efficiency + local energy production

Market analysis – Spas/Hotels

Optimization of energy costs ISSUE for all interviewed companies

19 of 20 interviewed companies need enhancement of energy efficiency (exception: 1 new thermal bath)

Higher relevance given to “energy efficiency issue” than to “renewable energies issue”

Most companies consider energy source as second-rate price = critical factor

Larger SMEs mainly have an active energy management they are often already in an advanced process optimization

Many Food Processing companies are involved in cluster and network activities receive multifaceted advice and information

The production process in manufacturing companies is often complex specialized and technical solutions are more important than standard advice

Market analysis – Summary of the results

Page 22: GBE Factory | Market analysis - Brandenburg

www.gbefactory.eu

Category 1: Companies / baths without urgent needs: - satisfactory energy-situation in the company - energy advice and support already secured - implementation of optimization measures in the near future unlikely Efficiency measures to be carried out without external help Category 2:

Companies / baths: measures for the energy-optimization already designed Financial support needed to implement them

- need for advice on subsidies (i.e. specialists ZAB, Zukunft Agentur Brandenburg) Category 3: Companies / baths: measures for energy optimization already planned but not yet decided on time and specific measures Companies reluctant to implement difficulties to find individual appropriate technical

and legal advice. Through the mediation of ad hoc specialists for each company’s need the implementation process could be promoted.

Category 4: Firms that recognize the need for energy optimization of their business since long time,

practical ideas for solving the problem, however, are only just at the beginning stage. Companies in this category expressed highest need for support!
