Gautam ThaparAmity Business SchoolEarly LifeGautam Thapar belongs to the third generation of the business family founded by his grandfather Karam Chand Thapar, in Kolkata.

Karam Chand had initially offered the reins of the family business to Gautum's father, Brij Mohan Thapar, bypassing his oldest son Inder Mohan Thapar.

Brij Mohan passed on the chance to his younger brother Lalit Mohan Thapar, giving lack of desire and inability to shoulder the responsibility as the reasons.

The group of companies run by Gautam was rebranded as Avantha, and the new identity launched worldwide on 15th November 2007.

Amity Business School Gautam began his education at the prestigious Doon School, where he imbibed a liberal education based on the ideals of secularism, discipline and equality.

After, studying chemical engineering in the U.S.A., he returned to India.

Education

Amity Business School He started his career as a factory assistant in one of the organizations manufacturing companies.

He rose steadily and steered the organization through a strategic and visionary turnaround, involving resilience and restructuring, ensuring that the Group attained dominant status in key operating sectors.

Gautam became Group Chairman on 1st July 2006. He sits on the boards of various companies in India and overseas.

Now, Gautam Thapar is Founder and Chairman of India's foremost diversified corporation, the Avantha Group.

Business CareerAmity Business School In 2008, Gautam received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Manufacturing.

He has been appointed Board Member of the National Security Advisory Board, a key component of the National Security Council of India.

He is President of Thapar University, one of the top ten technical schools in India.

He is the Chairman of the Board of Governors, National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE). Awards & RecognitionAmity Business School He is Chairman of The Aspen Institute India, which aims to internationalize India's business, political and cultural leadership.

He is also the Chairman of the CII-Avantha Center for Competitiveness for SMEs, and is Past President of All India Management Association (AIMA)

He also takes an avid interest in promoting golf, and is President of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI).

In 2005 Indias second largest producer of coal prior to coal nationalization.
