Family Math NightLast night Garden Gate families and staff enjoyed Family Math Night. Lawrence Hall of Science was here, providing everyonewith opportunities for learning and discovery. Fun was had by all! A special thanks to staff member Patti Wolf and our fabulous
PTA for pulling this event together. What a success!
Zero Tolerance PolicyIn accordance with our Zero Tolerance Policy, remember that knives - even butter knives are not allowed at school. Thisinformation can be found on page 19 of our Parent Handbook. Items such as apples must be cut at home.
Dismissal TimeParents, please remember that there are two designated waiting areas on campus where we'd like you to wait for your 4th or 5th grade student to be released from class: Under the shade structure (lunch tables) or at the tables in front of the cafewindow (snack tables). Please do not wait in the hallways, as low noise, such as conversation, can be disruptive for classesstill in session. Similarly, for safety reasons, students may not play on the play structures or the blacktop areas after school.Instead, please have your children wait, seated, with you. The Garden Gate Staff appreciates your support with maintaining our learning environment and keeping students safe.
March/April Take It Personally (TIP) Parent Workshops CancelledDue to limited participation, we will cancel our six week Project Cornerstone parent workshop. We will look at offering thisworkshop again in the fall.
PropellersDo you wonder how to connect better with your children? Do you wonder what matters to them, and how you can assist themto grow up to be healthy, caring and responsible citizens? I encourage you to try a "propeller" - a question intended to sparkconversations with your children. Try it around the dinner table tonight! This week's propeller: Can you share an example of a time when you took personal responsibility for something youdid? and in life?

TRUANCY AND WHAT IT MEANSCompulsory attendance is the law in California fromage six until the age of eighteen (Education Code:482600). A student who has three unexcusedabsences or three tardies of more than 30 minutes or any combination thereof, without a valid excuse isconsidered legally truant. A student who has sixunexcused absences or six tardies or absences of more than 30 minutes, or any combination thereof, isconsidered habitually truant and will be referred for further action. How Does Truancy Impact Students?Students suffer academic setbacks when frequentabsences occur. If tardy by even a few minutes, students start their daybehind other students who have had a chance toorganize and are focused on instruction.Students in school on a regular basis and on time dosignificantly better in school.Studies have shown that students struggling in highschool developed patterns of absenteeism inelementary school.
These are just four items out of a long list of issuesthat negatively impact children when they are absentor tardy. Simply getting to school on time is one of thegreatest gifts you can give your child. It teachesresponsibility and punctuality; qualities everyprofession values. Lets make every effort to have our children in their seats when the school day begins at8:00.
LOST AND FOUNDPlease stop by the Lost and Found cabinet that islocated at the rear of the administrative building andtake a few moments to check for your lost personalitems. It is full with lunch containers, hats and manyother items. For smaller personal items such askeys, watches jewelry, etc., please check in the frontoffice.
STAR TESTING DATESThe California Standardized Assessment (STAR)testing dates are being published so that parents canplan ahead. STAR Testing will be held from April 30,2012 through May 11, 2012 for 2nd - 5th grades (with
make-up testing May 14th -18th). Your child will needto take the entire test in order to receive completeSTAR scores. Please do not schedule family trips or make appointments during these times. It is veryimportant that our students are at school during thetesting.
IMPORTANT SCHOOL CALENDAR DATES The CUSD Board of Education has approved thecalendar for the 2012-2013 school year. The first dayof school will be on August 20, 2012. The last day of school for this year is June 12, 2012. Students mustbe present on the last day of school and on the firstday of school in order to be guaranteed a spot atGarden Gate. Students not attending the last or firstday of school will be dropped and parents will need tore-register when the child returns.
ABSENCES AND TARDIES Attendance and punctuality are important inestablishing good behaviors and building responsibilityin young children. Please ensure that your child is atschool everyday and that they arrive on time. If your child will be absent, please call the attendance linepromptly (252-5414, ext. 6). If your child arrives after
8:00 a.m. they must report to the school office for alate slip before entering the classroom. Under statelaw, three unexcused absences or tardies may beconsidered truancy.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS:For the protection of the students, please remember that students are not to be on the Garden Gatecampus before 7:45 a.m. There is no adult supervisionuntil 7:45 a.m.Please do not congregate outside of the classroomswhile school is still in session.
