Accelerate your business in China with the G2C program from CC-Link

The CC-Link Partner Association (CLPA) has put together a comprehensive package of engineering and marketing services to help European device makers increase sales in the fast growing Chinese market.

The G2C program is primarily based around helping device makers to develop CC-Link compatible products. CC-Link is the most popular open automation network technology in Asia and an essential door opener for any manufacturer looking to sell into the Chinese market.

The G2C service goes beyond assistance with conformance testing and other engineering and software integration issues by providing pro-active assistance with local marketing activities and a massive technical support network.

To receive these benefits, a company simply joins the CLPA on an annual membership basis.

G2C already has the backing of key European CLPA partners, including:

• 3M

• ABB Robots

• Balluff

• Bihl + Wiedemann

• Cognex

• Datalogic

• Hilscher

• HMS

• IDEC

• Mitsubishi Electric

• Pepperl + Fuchs

• Pro-face

• Wago

• Weidmüller (Industrial Ethernet products)

This document expands on what is included in the G2C offer and provides a flavour of the opportunities awaiting those device makers selling into China with products that have CC-Link connectivity.

Improved market access

G2C benefits packageThe CC-Link brand is heavily promoted and recognised in major manufacturing environments in China.

With native language capability, numerous local offices and staff providing timely technical support, the CC-Link team will help you every step of the way.

Development supportWe will supply a comprehensive package of support to help develop a CC-Link compatible product.

CLPA membership is required in order to develop a compatible product. However, all CC-Link specifications (protocol, implementation, etc.) can be provided free of charge if you register as a CLPA member.

Free kits of development devices are available as is cable from partner 3M to help with device testing. Further, development assistance from CLPA’s local technical staff is also provided free of charge. Overall, with our support, fast implementation can be achieved without any protocol knowledge.

CLPA partners Hilscher and HMS are also offering benefits to companies who opt to use netX or Anybus technology to implement CC-Link.

Also Weidmüller provides a 10 gigabit field attachable RJ45 connector starter kit for the CC-Link IE-Field infrastructure.

All you need to do is determine the type of product to be developed, based on the amount of data to be handled and functionality required.

Marketing supportBy partnering with CC-Link you will have access to substantial marketing resources.

A typical program of activity may include advertising in leading Chinese industry journals,, promoting your CC-Link compatible products direct via online channels, coverage in newsletters, road shows, webinars and more.

These benefits are already part of CLPA’s extensive marketing activities in China, and joining the G2C programme allows European companies to leverage them to further their success in this market.

Advice on conformance testingA key requirement for adopting any open network technology is knowing that a device will operate correctly on the network. CC-Link addresses this by encouraging thorough conformance testing. On passing this set of tests, customers can be sure that the device will be freely interoperable with the rest of a CC-Link network.

Hence conformance tested devices are ready to offer the highest standards of reliability and performance in virtually any application.

CC-Link - some background

Which fieldbus is the most popular in the world? It depends who you ask. But there is no denying that CC-Link has grown to become a de-facto standard throughout Asia.

Developed in Asia, CC-Link is the backbone of the region’s industrial automation.

According to leading third party market research companies such as IMS and ARC, CC-Link has achieved a leadership position and is set to maintain it.

So why should CC-Link be of interest to companies in Europe? Quite simply, it’s become an enabling

technology for any company looking to sell their products into the Asian automation markets. And the fastest growing of these - hence the most the potential - is China.

China has become the leading market for many key global industries such as automotive and flat panel displays. In these industries, CC-Link has established a leadership position, effectively making it a de-facto standard.

Finally, CC-Link is well proven globally. It has an installed base of almost 9,000,000 devices, and over 240 companies manufacture products for it.

A de-facto standard

CC-Link - some background

The ‘Non-Stop-Open-Network’One of the major benefits of CC-Link networks is the ability to maintain operation even when problems occur. The technical term for this is the provision of enhanced reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS) functions, but we think “The Non-Stop Open Network” says it in a more memorable way. These functions provide operators of CC-Link networks with the ability to maintain production and productivity even in the face of adverse operating conditions.

There are several mechanisms that provide this “non-stop” capability, including the Standby Master Function that enables the provision of a standby master within any network. This means that even when a fault occurs in the master station, the standby master will be available to maintain network communications and the line will continue to function.

Similarly, the Detaching Slave Station Function means that should any slave station develop a fault, it

can be detached from the network, allowing the rest of the plant to continue uninterrupted. And, once the fault has been rectified, the repaired station can be returned to the network using the Automatic Return Function with no need to reconfigure the rest of the system. Again, this is valuable for maintaining uptime and hence productivity.

Finally, redundant loop configurations can also be built that allow communications to continue uninterrupted even in extreme cases such as network cables being disconnected or cut.

Combine features like these with unique capabilities such as unmatched gigabit Ethernet performance and it’s easy to see why CC-Link has risen to a leadership position in critical manufacturing industries such as automotive and flat panel displays.

China market insight

China’s transformation into a dynamic private-sector-led nation and its integration into the global economy have been among the most dramatic economic developments of recent decades. Indeed, China’s growth performance over the last three decades has been spectacular, with GDP growth averaging around 8 percent. China now ranks as the fastest growing economy in the world.

It has risen to become the world’s second largest economy and the world’s leading marketplace for many of the consumer products we take for granted. It has achieved in about 30 years much of what it took the West over 100 years to do.

In the beginning, much of this growth was based on largely manual, labour intensive processes. Even industries traditionally known for their high levels of automation in the West, such as automotive, were largely un-automated in China. However, in recent years, the cost penalties of this approach have become clear and China’s industries have been racing to automate in order to maintain their leading position in world manufacturing.

In addition, many of the world’s leading Asian manufacturing companies – many of them household names – have also joined the rush to set up plants in China.

Since CC-Link was already a standard for many of these companies, it was natural for them to take the network with them. This trend presents a significant opportunity for European companies active in the Chinese market when they invest in CC-Link development.

The 12th 5 Year PlanThe Chinese Government has consistently moved their strategic planning forward with a series of so called 5 Year Plans. 2011 sees the beginning of the 12th of these plans and it shows explicitly why manufacturing is a core component to the nation’s future success.

The 5 main areas are:

• To improve and promote manufacturing

• Promote restructuring of key industries

• Develop equipment for new strategic fields

• Improve the level of basic components, such as automatic controls

• Strengthen technical improvement in Enterprise

Industry focusThe key industries being focussed on by the plan are:

• Equipment manufacturing/machine building

• Automotive

• Textile

• Packaging

• Electronic information

All these markets offer significant opportunities for European companies.

Further, as noted by independent experts like KPMG, China has a track record of achieving the goals it has established in each 5 Year Plan. This means that there is a high probability these opportunities will be realized.
