Craig Allen, aged 35, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty at Coventry Crown Court last Thursday, to causing death by dangerous driving and driving with excess alcohol. His sentence was reduced to six years for an early guilty plea. The charges relate to a head-on collision on the A3400 at Wootton Wawen on Monday, 25th April in which 27-year-old motorcyclist Robert Loach died. Allen provided a positive breath test at the scene with a reading of 155mg. The legal limit is 35mg. He also pro- vided a positive drug swipe test for cocaine. PC David Bull said: “This was a tragedy which could have been avoided. The simple fact is that driving when you have been drinking or taking drugs is not just illegal it puts you and other road users at risk. “I hope that the sentence given out sends a message to all road users who might be tempted to drive after they have had a drink. It’s just not worth it.” After the tragedy, the family of Robert Loach paid tribute to a loving and wonderful son and doting father. Robert Loach, aged 27, of Birmingham Road, Redditch leaves a partner, Lian, and two children aged one and three. Lian said: “Robert was the world’s most doting father. He was my rock and my soul mate, the love of my life and I love him more than I could possibly say.” Robert’s mother, Sam, said: “Robert was my first born, a truly wonderful, inspirational person and most loving son.” A SET of gates commemorating those who gave their lives in the First World War have been installed at Strat- ford’s recently refurbished Guildhall. To mark the installation, the gates were blessed by the Reverend Canon Michael Hampel, Old Edwardian and Precentor of St Paul’s Cathedral, during a special cere- mony on 21st May. The gates, installed in the building’s cross passage, were presented by the Old Edwardians’ Association as part of the First World War Centenary commemorations. They cost £5,000 and include a plaque honoring fallen First World War servicemen. On a practical level the gates will allow the Guildhall to be opened up for visitors, but prevent them from gaining access to the rest of the school. Bennet Carr, head master at King Edward VI School, said: “The installation of the gates is part of the restora- tion of the Guildhall, for much of the building’s history there had been gates there, the fittings have always been in place. “The original gates were probably removed around 100 years ago during the previous restoration of the Guildhall. “The outer gates facing onto Church Street were put up in the 1950s and were dedicated to those who fell in the Second World War, so it is fitting that the new inner gates are dedicated to First World War servicemen. I think it is right that they commemorate such an impor- tant event in history, not just for the school but for the whole country. “The gates include the seal of the Guild of the Holy Cross, which was created by taking a 3D scan of a wax seal and commissioning a company to cast it in bronze for us.” A set of gates commemorating those who gave their lives in the First World War have been installed at Stratford’s recently refurbished Guildhall. Let’s help fundraisershave a purple patch

SIXTEEN years agothe residents of Strat-ford and the sur-rounding towns andvillages came togetheras a community andraised the funds to openThe Shakespeare Hos-pice.

Now it is a nationallyrecognised, award-winning,charity which provides avital and unique service toStratford and the widercommunity.

On Friday, 24th June thehospice is asking people toShake it Purple for TheShakespeare Hospice andhelp raise funds for thenursing staff and servicesthe hospice provides.

Encouraging everyone toget involved, Vikki Calcutt, head of income generationadded: “Fundraising doesn’thave to be boring!

“The success of cam-paigns such as Red NoseDay and Children in Need, show us that we can have allkinds of fun raising moneyand it would be lovely ifpeople could show theirsupport in an enjoyableway, for a charity that isclose to the hearts of thelocal community.”

To get started and supportthe hospice people need toregister for a freefundraising pack whichincludes a bucket and a tinor money box to collectdonations.

“Whether it be in theoffice, at school or at home, everyone can do their bit for

The Shakespeare Hospice. There are many easy waysto get involved. Why nothold a ‘Bake it Purple’ dayat school or your local com-munity centre, encourageyour colleagues to showtheir support by wearing ‘APiece of Purple’ to work orhost a Purple Bingo eveningwith your friends?” saidVikki.

The Shakespeare Hospicereceives only around 7 percent funding from the Gov-ernment, making it thelowest funded hospice inthe whole of the UK.

Kate Hall, head of clin-ical services, said: “Thehospice is a fantastic causeand relies almost solely ondonations to keep deliv-ering vital care to the localcommunity. Without thissupport, we wouldn’t beable to provide expert andspecialist care to thoseliving with a life-limitingillness, whether it be here atthe hospice, or in the com-fort of their own home.”

The Shake it Purple cam-paign was launched onThursday and runs up to thebig fundraising day on the24th June where the hospicewill be holding an outdoorevent in Kenilworth.

Six regional performances tookplace earlier this year, with one groupfrom each being invited to perform atthe national finals.

Having been chosen winners of theMidlands heat at the Royal ConcertHall in Nottingham on 29th February, the Stratford students willnow compete in the 2016 NationalShowcase in London on Tuesday, 28th June, where they will be accompanied by the RambertOrchestra.

“It’s one of my dreams to perform inthe West End and now it’s going tohappen. It’s overwhelming – a once ina lifetime opportunity.

“The other groups were really goodbut I was so pleased with our choreog-raphy. We obviously had what

Rambert were looking for!”The aim of ‘Rambert Elements’ is to

give students the chance to create andperform an original dance piece withhelp from Rambert’s leading choreog-raphers, who produced ‘toolkits’ forthe participating groups.

Each toolkit contained ideasincluding a theme – complete withtitle and suggested sources of inspira-tion – a piece of music, sequences ofmovement demonstrated by Rambertdancers and some helpful tips from

the Rambert choreographer.Kath Waters, Dance lecturer at

Stratford-upon-Avon College, isextremely proud of her group of youngdancers. She said: “I’m delighted forthem – they have worked incrediblyhard and thoroughly deserve theirplace in the final.”

New legislationon ‘legal highs’

The Psychoactive Sub-stances Act will provide ablanket ban on the produc-tion, supply and importationof psychoactive substances— that is any substanceintended for human con-sumption that is capable ofproducing a psychoactiveeffect.

Legitimate substances, such as food, alcohol, tobacco, nicotine, caffeineand medical products areexcluded.

The legislation will fun-damentally change the waypolice forces tackle thesesubstances and will makenew drugs that appear onthe market illegal quickerthan ever before.

Warwickshire Police andWest Mercia Police will bepolicing the act in a prac-tical and proportionatemanner, as well as placing a

great emphasis on an educa-tional and preventativeapproach, along withpartner agencies.

Detective Chief InspectorAlly Wright, business leadfor drugs for the alliance, said: “We are committed topreventing the harm causedby illegal drugs and this leg-islation gives us newpowers to tackle psychoac-tive substances.

“The effects of these sub-stances can be devastating, even fatal.

“Users can never be sureof exactly what they con-tain, the side effects theycould have or what long-term damage they could

cause. We would urgepeople never to even con-sider taking them.

“We will take actionwhere we find people com-mitting offences under thisact. Punishments rangefrom a prohibition notice, which is a formal warning,to seven years in prison.”

Officers have been givenpowers to stop and searchpeople, vehicles and vesselsand enter and search prem-ises in accordance with awarrant, and to seize anddestroy psychoactive sub-stances.

Advice and support canbe found at www.talk-tofrank.com

Demand for electric cars on the waneTHE number of electric carson Britain’s roads may haveshot up to more than 40,000from just 3,500 two yearsago, but a new survey hasshown that only three percent of motorists are inter-ested in buying one in thenext five years, so saysinsurance broker AdrianFlux.

Its survey found that, while more than 23 per centremain undecided about thenew technology, just threeper cent of respondentswere considering swappingthe pump for the plug.

Despite the potentialfinancial and environmentalbenefits of owning an elec-tric car, and the increasingrollout of infrastructure, more than 73 per cent of the1,784 motorists surveyed by

Flux, which specialises inproviding cover for modi-fied and unusual vehicles, said that they were not plan-ning to buy one.

These figures representonly a small rise in interestsince a 2012 survey by thebroker found that just twoper cent of motorists wereconsidering switching to anelectric car, with 28 per centundecided.

Gerry Bucke, generalmanager at Flux, said:“Many of the 1,785 peoplewho took our survey saidthat they felt electric cars, orat least hybrids, would oneday be commonplace on ourroads, but most thought thatthere were still many hur-dles for manufacturers tojump through before thathappened.

“Despite an increasednumber of charging pointsin the UK, many motoristsstill suffer from range anx-iety, which is somethingwhich won’t disappear untilchargers are as widespreadas petrol stations, chargingis as quick as filling up, andelectric cars can offer sim-ilar ranges to current vehi-cles.

“Despite the governmentgrant, new electric cars stilltend to cost more than theirpetrol or diesel-poweredcousins, which remains anissue for many, as do thesupposed environmentalbenefits. People remainunconvinced about the prac-ticality of the technology asit stands, as well as whetherthe cars are as green asmanufacturers claim.”

Focused Melanie ready torelaunch triathlon careerA STRATFORD physiothera-pist who thought she hadbeen forced into retirementfrom triathlon is making adramatic return to the toplevel in her age group thanksto revolutionary stem celltechnology treatment.

Melanie Betts had suffered fromchronic intermittent AchillesTendinopthy for several years butit flared up disastrously at theWorld Championships in Chicagolast September and she only man-aged to finish in 39th place;despite finishing the bike leg inaround 15th place.

Now, after being one of the firstBritish athletes to undergo stemcell technology treatment, the 49-year-old is back competing forTeam GB in the European Cham-pionships on 29th May in Lisbon, having taken part in her firsttriathlon in Tewkesbury last week.

She’s aiming for the EuropeanHalf Ironman Championships inAustria at the start of Septemberas her main event this year and theWorld Long Distance Champi-

onships in Oklahoma at the end ofSeptember and considers herself apodium contender in the 2017World Championships in Rot-terdam.

Betts is married to AndrewClarke who farms at AbbotsMorton near Alcester. The couplehave two children, Grace agednine, and Isobel aged six. She toldus about her amazing recovery andthe relaunch of her athleticscareer.

She said: “I’m a former TeamGB physiotherapist and currentlyrun practices at Atherstone and theleading Wildmoor Spa and HealthClub in Stratford.

“I was treating the founder ofthe club when I learned he is alsoa director of CT Ltd Therapywhich happened to be conductingresearch into stem cell therapy forAchilles tendinopathy. I managedto get on the trials in Greece andthis involved me flying there twiceand self-treating at home.

“Tenocytes are the buildingblocks of tendons where themuscle joins onto the bone. I hadto rub a gel into my leg which thetendon absorbed.

“The gel contains growth fac-

tors in a platelet lysate gel calledTendoncelTM.

“These are isolated plateletgrowth factors reconstituted withinthe cellulose derivative gel. Thegrowth and repair of the tendon isencouraged — resulting in repara-tion and rebuilding of the collagenmatrix or the body within thestructure of the tendon itself.

“Over a three-month period Iwent from not being able to run atall to full run-training. I achievedresults in a very short space oftime, less than four weeks, on achronic problem which had beenon and off for ten years.

“Within the first week to tendays I started slow jogging andthen, on day 21, I was back inGreece and I ran five miles alongthe waterfront there before myfinal reading.

“So I’d gone from not runningat all back to a decent pace overfive miles in three weeks. I had tosend photos and measurements ofmy leg twice a week. I was theonly athlete taking part in thetrials.

“Since Christmas I’ve beenracing pain free and winning localand regional events again.”
