1 The PMO is the new engine of organizational change. A stellar PMO delivers business outcomes. It starts with hiring and empowering key staff, then building the right culture and finally embracing the concept of servant leadership — the secret to managing from the middle.

2 Activist enterprise PMOs are becoming the new norm. To cut across silos and connect strategy to execution, C-suites will increasingly rely on activist EPMO leaders. Proactive, hands-on, politically engaged and results-oriented, these leaders are shifting resources from operational improvement toward growth, innovation and realizing strategic goals.

3 Success depends on organizational change management. Even if IT execution is flawless, transformational programs can’t deliver promised benefits if adoption fails or lags. Maximizing adoption through effective organizational change management and new change methodologies is the key to realizing tangible business results.

4 There’s a better way to build an application business case. Prioritize the right investments and focus on outcomes that matter. An “application prospectus” process can deliver better business outcomes by helping all stakeholders understand the risks and rewards and make informed decisions.

5 Greater complexity means risk assessment needs to change. The complexity and high stakes of today’s projects requires understanding biases and identifying, addressing and at times embracing risk. Calibration, Monte Carlo simulation and the Gartner Business Risk Model can help accurately assess risks.

6 Hybrid agile strategies address unstable requirements. Mobile, social, cloud and big data are bringing fundamental change that necessitates more agile approaches to staffing, resources and application development. Agile methods confer adaptability advantages and minimize risk.

7 Effective governance takes full participation. Lasting, effective governance takes buy-in and commitment from everyone involved, in terms of goals and processes. Find a level of governance everyone can live with and agree to adhere to it.

8 Emerging strategies can streamline portfolio management. From application rationalization to integrated IT portfolio analysis to pace layering, new application portfolio management techniques are helping lower IT costs, increase IT agility and responsiveness and turn legacies into strategies.

9 Aligning PPM with the business will ensure strategic outcomes Thinking of the IT organization like a business within a business and increasing financial transparency at every stage of a project will help you optimize costs and deliver greater value.

10 The cloud makes ERP projects harder. By 2018, at least 30% of service-centric companies will move the majority of their ERP applications to the cloud. Having a strong ERP-PMO is more important than ever.

Delivering Change in the Digital Era Matthew Hotle, Richard HunterGartner’s Matthew Hotle and Richard Hunter kicked off the conference with a big-picture look at the rapid digitalization of enterprises occurring worldwide, and the significant impact it will have on enterprise strategy and its execution. Most organizations haven’t yet come to grips with the rate of IT change that will be necessary in this emerging digitalized world — a pace that current PPM processes won’t be able to sustain. Addressing challenges as well as opportunities, the presentation highlighted the need or new PPM practices suited to the digital era.

Strategically Align PPM to Focus Transformational Change James Brown, Mark A. Langley, Matt Light, Claire RutkowskiProject Management Institute’s Mark A. Langley joined Gartner’s Matt Light and executives from MWH Global and DuPont Pioneer to discuss how to harness PPM to deliver organizational change. To be able to tie goals to corporate strategy, the PMO needs to have a seat at the “strategic table.” A lively Q&A between the panelists and audience revealed the secret to successful digital-age business transformation: a dynamic approach that balances diligence with adaptability, and careful follow-through to ensure that proposed benefits are fully realized.

The Wolf in CIO’s Clothing Tina NunnoIn leadership, there is no safe middle ground. Those who execute enterprise strategy can find themselves negotiating tricky and risky situations. At the extreme, normal management tactics no longer apply, and leaders may need to go to the “dark side” to defend themselves or go on the offensive and win. In this session, Gartner’s Tina Nunno applied Machiavellian disciplines of power, manipulation and warfare to the world of IT and business leaders, a strategy further explored in the Gartner eBook, “The Wolf in CIO’s Clothing: A Machiavellian Strategy for Successful IT Leadership.” Take the Wolf Quiz at gartner.com/wolfcio to discover which animals best represent your leadership skills in difficult and extreme situations.

Taking a Leadership Role in Today’s Global Economy Madeleine AlbrightFormer Secretary of State Madeleine Albright took the stage for an inspiring and candid discussion of her life and extraordinary career, sharing leadership insights from decades of public service. Speaking with humor and eloquence, she shared her experiences as a young refugee who rose to become one of the 20th century’s most powerful women. Using recollections of power politics and negotiations at the highest levels, she illustrated what it takes to be a leader in today’s global economy.

Top-of-mind concerns (what attendees asked about)• Disruptive change is everywhere, and all of it seems to require a major new IT project. How can

we identify and prioritize the right projects?

• The business is looking to PPM for leadership at the enterprise level, but we don’t have those skills in our PMO. How can we transition to an activist EPMO that’s prepared to lead transformative change?

• The degree and pace of change is taking its toll across the organization. What can the PMO do to combat change fatigue?

• How can we improve collaboration between the PMO and EA to deliver transformative change aligned with business objectives?

• How can we realize the full potential of a project? What metrics and key performance indicators are best for demonstrating its success?

• Legacy drag is slowing us down, eating up the budget and monopolizing resources. How can we make innovation the priority?

• New PPM tools and technologies are emerging continuously. How can I identify the best fit for our needs?

• PPM roles are changing quickly. How can I stay ahead, develop the skills I need to succeed in this new environment and deliver on expectations?

• As PPM splinters into run, grow and transform roles, what effect is it having on the labor market? How can I recruit the skills I need?

• What impact will the Internet of Things have on enterprise strategy and execution?

• Digital-age projects require more input from users and sponsors. What can we do to improve collaboration?

“ This is my first Gartner event and I love the realistic view of what’s happening in the PPM space.” Sarah Pulley, Senior Project Manager, Echostar
