GARLAND Democratic Voice News & Information for Garland Area democrats August 14, 2011 Garland, Texas Edition #24 Debt Ceiling Deal Where Are the Jobs? The Debt Limit bill, S 365, is a pathetic piece of legislation. The details make as much sense as a bill to prevent a pig smoking a cigar from walking on two legs through downtown Garland. A pig bill does no harm. What started as a noble concept, reducing government spending and the national debt was turned into a cruel joke costing thousands their jobs and accomplishing nothing of significance toward reaching initial goals. The bill reduces spending by $400 billion immediately by reducing and putting spending caps on spending for military personnel, overseas contingency operations/global war on terrorism, disability reviews under titles II and IV of the Social Security Act, health care fraud and abuse control, disaster funding, defense, Federal Pell Grants to graduate students, direct loan repayment incentives, and discretionary spending. The bill predicts the needs for the next ten years. Each budget item has a defined annual spending limit and punitive adjustments if the budget is exceeded. A vote on the balanced budget amendment is mandatory in both the House and the Senate. (A proposed amendment becomes part of the Constitution only after it is ratified by three-fourths of the State Legislatures: 38 of 50). The bill also establishes a committee consisting of 6 Senators and 6 Representatives to reduce spending by an additional $1.5 trillion between 2012 and 2021. The committee will have two co-chairs with members appointed by the majority and minority leaders of the House and Senate. Decisions of the committee can be debated but not revised or eliminated. Hamsters are spinning their wheels providing fodder for political newscasters and pendants. Future debt limit increases must be initiated by the President. Both Houses must pass a Resolution of Disapproval. The bill does nothing to create jobs and in fact will add thousands of Americans to the unemployment rolls. In the week since passage, the stock market has taken a 500-plus fall. Americans are told this is due to the financial troubles of Europe (and not the debt bill). – Voice Staff Produced and Printed In House by Rachel Baker Ford, 3317 Knights Haven Lane Garland, Texas 75044 What’s Inside: Page 1.... Howrsquos Your Consumer Confidence--Willa Kulhavy

Mine is in the crapper But maybe yours is ok

I did an economics paper in college on which my professorwrote ldquoYour economic theory is backwardrdquo I am still trying toovercome my economic theory dyslexia See if I understand theeconomy now

ldquoThe US economy will be okay unless there is deflationrdquo saidAndreas Bremer VP and Chief Operating Officer ofInternational Capital LLC (an international real estateinvestment company) when speaking to the Rowlett DemocraticClub May 28 meetingth

Income employment home prices and interest rates are downIf I have the theory correct now those are signs of deflationBut not to worry oil gold and food prices are up Deflation forworkers inflation for capitalists our Tea Party economy is akind of balanced economy and we have the debt ceilingdeficitdeal to keep it that way

But I remember the consumer confidence feeling I miss it Itoften was there during the last 50 years of the 20 century Itth

wasnrsquot because people had more money (Not many families hadtwo cars They didnrsquot eat out often Compare the size of housesbuilt in the last century with those in a new development) It wasbecause they were reaping the benefits of long years ofincremental victories in the fight for labor and equal rights Itwas a time when the Consumer Confidence Index was importantto the economy because people were making progress A goodbit of the progress was made by union people

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics 1953 was the yearunion membership as a percentage of labor force was thehighest at 255 In 1933 it was 52 and in 2010 it was 119Is there a correlation between progress confidence and thestrength of unions Unions fought 19 and 20 centuryth th

industrialists and won the right to organize for child labor laws8 hr days 40 hr weeks and minimum wage We need to revampunions for the electronic age and fight to protect whatrsquos left ofthose old hard won benefits and to restore collective bargainingend voter suppression protect voting rights and amend theConstitution limiting protection of the First Amendment tohuman beings not corporate money

If like me you already flushed away your consumer confidencedonrsquot worry about it We can pick up some at the union hall afterwe make unions forces to be respected again Ref Bureau of Labor Statistics and New Media Journalftpftpblsgovpubspecialrequestscollbargunmemtxt httpnewmediajournalusindxphpitem596sms_ss=newsvineampat_xt=4d69

Garland Democratic VoiceMoney What Money

The Money Came From WhereThree months ago the Government hit thedebt ceiling but kept operating with a newdeadline for raising the debt limit of August 22011 Where did the government get themoney The Government receipts from taxesand other sources total about $125 billiondollars less than it spends each month So theGovernment has been raiding the federalretiree programs just like they did SocialSecurity Raiding Social Security wasnrsquot aproblem until a recession came along at thesame time baby boomers were starting toretire and the work force was shrinking Goodluck to those of you planning or are receivinga pension from federal pension programs

The solutions to our debt problems presentedin Washington DC have no thought behindthem There is an estimated $2 trillion stashedaway in tax shelters off shore in the CaymanIslands Belize Isle of Man Panama and StKitts Most of this cash belongs tocorporations but internet web sites supply theoff shore service to individuals Congressdoes nothing about this and insists uponmaintaining subsidies for highly profitablecorporations Congress will not rescind taxloopholes for corporations who pay noincome tax year after year Sen BernieSanders I-VT is the only voice heard pushingfor these changes Corporations threaten tomove overseas Their headquarters is amailbox in the Cayman Islands their profitsare off shore and the jobs are overseas whatis left to move Executives like to live in theUnited States but donrsquot want to help supportthe country

Sen Tom Coburn R-OK presented a study ofwhere the stimulus money went and what itwas used for in a PDF presentation calledldquoWastebook 2010 The money was used forsprucing up buildings before they were torndown a museum for neon signs and manyother trivial or ridiculous items Perhaps thehardest to understand is $442340 to ldquoStudyMale Prostitutes in Vietnamrdquo The full list isinldquoWastebook 2010 on his website If thestimulus program which did a lot of goodcontains these goofy items I would hate toguess what the Federal budget wastes moneyon Where are the oversight agencies assignedto this responsibility

There are much better ways to finance gov-ernment than stealing from pension funds

Social SecurityAfter depositing a portion of your paycheck in a savingsaccount 40 years one expects to get their money back withinterest One can estimate the amount and expect the balanceto be larger than the original principal When requesting awithdrawal from your account one doesnrsquot want to hear theboard of directors borrowed your money bet your money on alosing horse and the FDIC wonrsquot cover the loss

This is exactly the situation with Social Security The SocialSecurity Trust Fund is theldquobankrdquo Congress is the ldquoBoard ofDirectorsldquoand The Tea Party is the ldquoFDICrdquo

The trust fund has been raided The government ldquoborrowedrdquothe money to balance the budget in prior years The $559billion comes into the government from the SS payroll tax With $727 billion commitment to the SS recipients thegovernment must borrow the $168 billion difference Aggravating this is the ldquopayroll tax reductionrdquo agreed to inDecember reducing the Social Security deduction from 62 to42 of the pay Some say SS doesnrsquot contribute to thedeficit but itrsquos like taking money from the left pocket instead ofthe right and assuming you have more money remaining

The SS trust fund is a strange concept implying there is stack

cash with your name on it to be doled out duringretirement This not the case The money is invested in USTreasury bonds which are a loan to the government So did wewillingly loan it or did Congress take it Either way the cashdoes not exist

The federal government borrows 42 cents of every dollar itspends Therefore annual increases in the SS checks will besmaller Limiting the increases is one of the least painful waysto reduce the burden on the federal budget eliminating theburden of shared sacrifice on the wealthy like the Kochbrothers who labored hard for their inherited wealth

Another significant factor affecting the long term viability ofthe present Social Security system is the shrinking work forceThere are only 3 employed workers for each retiree The ratio worsens as the workforce shrinks and baby boomers retire The ratio is expected to hit 21 in 2030 Clearly we cannotexpect 2 or 3 workers to pay enough tax to support a retiree

Ways to improve the financial stability of SS

1 Increase the eligibility age

2 Apply means testing based on income or wealth with stringent enforcement eliminating loopholes for the rich

3 Raise or remove the wage limit of $106000

4 Include new state and local government hires in Social Security to increase the SS tax base

5 Bring the troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan now

Privatizing Social Security is not an viable option Thefinancial industry cannot be trusted to invest SocialSecurity funds in secure investments Individuals cannottolerate a 30 drop in wealth as the result of someoneelsersquos error or criminal financial management skills (Both articles by Charles E Ford Jr)

The Assault Continueshellip

Are there ANY Repugs who respect theEnvironment

What happened to John McCain ndash whoused to be a friend of the Environment

The battle plan of the corporate lobbyists (via thelawmaker bill writers) is to throw so much flack atthe enemy some of it will get through to destroythe enemies lines They will continue to attachmultiple riders knowing a few will slip through andbe passed Defeated riders are re-assembled andattached to another bill Relentless assault

Under the guise of ldquolimiting big governmentrdquo andencouraged by their successes in the legislature theGOP have stepped up their assault Unable to geta consensus to outright eliminate the EPA they areattempting to drastically reduce the EPAsauthority to regulate toxic chemicals entering ourair and water This affects ALL of us ndash its the airwe breathe and the water we drink

The Clean Air Act was passed by Nixon in 1970with large bi-partisan support followed by theClean Water Act (1972) For the next 20 years wesaw improvement in Air and Water Quality Ozone Episode days in Los Angeles dropped from121 in 1977 to 0 (none) in 1999 Then somethinghappened Corporate interests in the 1990sdecided their profits might be enhanced if theydidnt have those pesky environmental restrictionsto bother with when they dumped toxic wastes intothe air amp water They tentatively tested the publicsreaction to see if they could get some relief fromthese regulations In the 1992 BushCheneyelection they found willing partners to overturnthese regulations Regulations which hadsignificantly helped to clean up much of our air andmade some headway in cleaning major water ways(Remember the water burning on the Chesapeake Bay)Cheney gets the credit for fast-tracking theexemptions for the oil and gas industry (includingfracking) Many industries decided they should alsohave the same exemptions The race was on

The latest assaults are in the form of ridersattached to critical appropriation bills TheAppropriations Bill for the Environment and TheRelated Agencies Appropriations Act FY 2012(HR 2584) is currently ready for a Vote This Billcontains 45 anti-environmental riders This bill ifpasses will cause irreparable damage to our planetand our people

This issue of the GADC Voice contains a supplement ldquoDoThey Care Who They Kill Or Who Suffers A Reportto Citizens About the Horrible Consequences to Lifeby The GOP in the US Congress The Death of theEPA The Rape of America The Death of Life ItselfrdquoRead the supplement and learn about these two terriblebills Call write or email our Representatives inWashington let them know how you feel Respond to anonline activist email solicitation (Ed find your

Garland Democratic VoiceThe gop are killing AMERICA

This issue of the GADC Voice contains a supplement ldquoDoThey Care Who They Kill Or Who Suffers A Reportto Citizens About the Horrible Consequences to Lifeby The GOP in the US Congress The Death of theEPA The Rape of America The Death of Life ItselfrdquoRead the supplement and learn about these two terriblebills Call write or email our Representatives inWashington let them know how you feel Respond to anonline activist email solicitation (Ed find your

representative at wwwhousegovrepresentatives) Share thesupplement with everyone you know

We can make a difference ndash but it will take all of us
