Bold, brightly colored flowers are either mopheads (snowball-like flowers) or lacecaps. Stock both types in range of colors; flower colors are dependent on soil pH. Adding aluminum sulfate to soils will encourage the production of blue flowers; basic soils and untreated growing media will produce pink-red ones. Hydrangeas are fast and easy to grow, though we recommend that commercial growers cease fertilization in August and run the plants very dry to help them harden off for winter.

H. serrata is native to mountainous regions of Asia and Japan, and is better suited to cold climates than H. macrophylla, which is native to milder coastal regions. While we have liked H. serrata for years because of its improved bud hardiness, the new Tuff Stuff® hydrangeas add another dimension of coolness to this species: they rebloom.
